What a fun video! I definitely get the "chatting with a friend" vibe from your channel, Kristina! I saw some familiar objects from my childhood in that magazine. Well, since I was born in 1968, they weren't exactly from that era but close enough. I remember my mom had the sweeper broom in addition to her big old vacuum and I thought it was pretty cool...LOL! The starbursts reminded me of Laci Fay! Oh, and mercurochrome was popular medicine that was used for cuts and scrapes back then. It was still popular in the 1970's, unfortunately. It stung and it was bright, bright red. I have my doubts that it wouldn't stain Varlar walls because I spilled it on the linoleum floor once (thankfully a small amount) and there was no way it was coming up!

That was a refrigerator hanging on the wall. Those used to be a thing, and you can still find them in some old houses. I don't know why they ever went out of fashion; they're awesome!
What a fun video Kristina I totally enjoyed it! My dad used to use mercurochrome for cuts. It was pulled from pharmacies & stores 1998 because it contain Mercury not good going on the blood stream specially growing developing children. Much love to you! ❤
I share your dish collecting brain. My husband's family always ate on Franciscan Apple dishes. I tripped over a huge collection at a time in my life when I had extra cash to spend on them, so while I have no cups and saucers, I have 12 plates, a gravy boat and an oatmeal bowl and a few other odd pieces. I have 4 Halloween plates, 3 sets of Christmas dishes, service for 8 Spode dishes and many serving pieces and 4 St. Patty's Day plates, and more odd combos. It might be silly, but it is my kitchen and my home and if others do not agree, that is fine with me. I love changing for a couple of weeks.
Catalogs from the past are so interesting. I prefer the hardwood floors as well, can't understand how they'd replace their beautiful hardwood floors with carpet!
They really are fascinating. It's funny to see what was being advertised then - like "plastic is a miracle product!" that we now realize isn't very good for the environment or us!
I prefer tile over wood... But I think it's because my last house had 5 sliding glass doors that weren't well insulated, and wind blew in the rain sometimes🙄 That wasn't a well planned house. Oh well. I am happy to have less carpet though. When we were house hunting, we found a house that was almost really good, but there was carpet in the bathroom. And- in the kitchen cabinets?! Whyyyyyyyy?!!! Uhg!

Most of our blankets had the satin edging. I guess because they thought the wool would be scratchy against your neck and face but I found the satin ICE COLD against my skin so had to fold down the top edge. I enjoy looking through my collection of 1940s and 1950's catalogues and magazines for inspiration like you do. All my furniture is from the 1940's 1950s and early 1960s and lots of vintage dishes, etc. As far as the clothing goes I have some vintage pieces, but also over 200 vintage sewing patterns, mostly 1950s, which I treasure. We have similar interest despite the fact you are considerably younger than me! I have subscribed!

Hi Kristina, I love your channel, love you! On 12:00 you're talking about why women in the midcentury loved carpeting. I was born in the 1960s (I am not a Boomer!) but I remember a lot about the late 60s and the 1970s. I can tell you, my mother wanted wall to wall carpeting so much. We moved into a rental house when I was around 6 yo. I remember my mother *stripping the old wax off the kitchen floor* then resting a while, then reapplying 2 or 3 or 4 coats of Johnson's Wax. She would "damp mop" this floor virtually every day, and then the scrubbing to remove the old yellowing wax, after a few weeks to a month and applying new coats so the linoleum would shine and wouldn't stain was a continual chore. Wax turned yellow and peeled if it wasn't removed and reapplied really often. My mom *hated* stripping the wax off the floor and applying new wax, she used steel wool, ammonia and probably more stuff. I remember how shiny the floor would be when she applied the new wax. She hated it. I remember her actually crying on occasion because it was time to strip the wax off the kitchen floor. If she had her way, she would have put wall to wall carpeting everywhere. In fact, my MIL *did* put wall to wall carpeting everywhere, except her basement because she hated the whole stripping the wax and re-waxing the floor all the time. If my mother did the wax procedure maybe once a month, I bet my MIL did every week. She lived for housework, but she also hated it with a passion. She put wall to wall indoor outdoor carpeting in their kitchen as soon as they could. I, personally don't mind carpeting, as it is usually easier to clean than hard flooring. But, the flooring in kitchens we have now is a lot less care intense as old linoleum floors. Hard wood is beautiful and I do love that. Keep up the good work! Hugs.
I had fun watching your video. It was like I was sitting with you in your kitchen,looking at the magazine together,hanging out. Mercurochrome was an antiseptic for minor cuts that was red . And it burned when you had it put on your cut. As a child in the 60s I remember it.
Thanks for sharing this with us! I remember poring over my grandma's Ladies' Home Journal and Better Homes magazines from the 1970s and wanting everything! And yes, that carpet everywhere was a reap trend. My in-laws have a bathroom they built in the '60s with thick, green carpet covering the ENTIRE floor. And my grandparents had a Pepto-Bismol pink bathroom with white carpet covering all the floorspace. So weird--and impractical!

Ive only just discovered your videos, I love your vibe, you wear the loviest dresses. My mum was a 1950s house wife and to this day its my dna to care for my home, much as she did. As I age I very much value the homekeeping skills my mum taught me unbeknownst to her. Although when she finally got a freezer it liberated her from the kitchen overnight and we lived from frozen foods in the 1960 /70s no harm ever came to us xx
I have several sets of dishes, love to entertain! Setting a pretty table brings me a lot of joy. I actually don't do it for myself. I like to do it for other people. So,, in my opinion, thrift away and get those dishes!
I learned to love knotty pine paneling from retro renovation blog. It is actually heart pine. I bought an early 60s house with it in the kitchen/den and a bedroom. It’s a pretty color especially with all the light from the huge south-facing windows. Not too dark or too brown. Really pops against white appliances and Carrara marble-look LVT floor. Like a vacation cabin year round!
I totally want to have seasonal dishes too! And curtains!! And decor. Like Christmas decor because winter decor and is out all winter and Halloween decor becomes fall daecor

i love old dishes too, i have a collection of thrifted, floral print plates edged in gold , beautiful, mismatched but they go together because they are all florals, the problem is you cant put them in the microwave because of the gold, so i end up replating everything, accumulate double the dishes to wash.. grrrr... its a whole thing, a pain, honestly.... i noticed you have the franciscan desert rose pieces.. they are one of my faves.. i had the water and o.j. glasses, a random teacup/ saucer and the odd dessert plate or two.. i wish i still had them.. i also used to find the brand noritake all the time but anyway, yeah i have individual pieces and im thinking .. im getting old!!! lol... ive started curling my hair and wearing head scarves again due to your influence!!!! im 51.... its funny to observe that older people embraced the more casual approach in dress, decor, lifestyle just everything.. it gets a bit old after years but it is fun to " play dress up".. gotta love the modern conveniences and being able to run to the store without taking an hour to get dolled up!!!! i wonder how many housewives had outside help or was that only in the movies??

I loved looking through this magazine with you! It felt so casual and relaxed, and the ads are all so cute! Those sliding glass bath enclosures scare me... they never opened smoothly, and I got stuck in one as a child! Plus the water that got held in the track 🤢

I have to say even though I prefer no carpets (having pets & all) I do appreciate a vintage carpet lol. I think it's a nostalgia thing remembering my grandma's floral pattern ❤️.
That cabinet fridge was a real thing. Very cool, but they were super heavy. I have some of that Franciscan if you want it. I already HAVE seasonal dish sets, so I don't need to keep them. 🤣😂🤣
These videos are so much fun! It's a lot of fun to window shop through these magazines, and imagine what I would do if I was shopping then. Some of the decor still is in style, we just match it with other things and it's interesting to see what we kept and didn't. Also, I live in a house from 1954 that has a lot of original things still intact about it (the walls are light mint green!), and can attest that plain faced dark brown wood cabinets are possibly the most boring and depressing thing you could put in a kitchen (21:53). They weirdest part about them? They work with very few decor schemes, because they're such a statement unto themselves, what with their knotty wood faces and dark stain, but also wouldn't be improved by painting, because it just highlights their extremely basic construction. 0/10, would not recommend.

I have just acquired a boat load of old magazines and a retro 1968 Better Homes and Gardens Decorating 5 ring binder book with so many cool pics of the late 60s. One problem I have is that there is a musty smell, so I have noted them all winter in plastic bins with special odor removing rocks. Also decided to put the book out in the sun today. My plan is to make it an altered junk journal but not sure how thick it would wind up being.
Loved the chatty vid! I noticed you commented on short hairstyle and said something about not usual for 50s. That style was very popular. (June Allyson) You might note that all the women in magazine had short hair and most stars of that era had short hair. (Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner) teen girls had ponytail styles and longer hair.
What I meant was, I don’t associate short straight hair with straight short bangs with the 50s. I know short was the vibe and most stars had short hair but generally we think of curled hair

the ad w/ the kitchen table that u thought she was wearing a dress w/ pants? no. the "dress" is actually a long matching top that buttoned only around the waist & then hung open. very popular. u will see it in numerous movies where the star is playing some well off lady of the house, usually w/ a cigarette & a cocktail while waiting for hubby to come home from work & dinner is ready....i remember seeing lauren bacall wearing one & also lucille ball. i cant remember the movies tho...but it was very popular & so stylish looking. & they always had pockets & it was worn w/ slipper style HEELS! darling!.
I loved this video!! It was really fun to go through the magazine with your commentary. I have a collection of vintage magazines and it's always fascinating and hilarious to read them. One thing I've noticed is that the articles and stories are a lot shorter in modern magazines. It's like we lost our ability to sit and read for a long time.
My house was built in 59 the kitchen is original the counters are a brown speckled laminin. The original floor is underneath the vinal and it is gray speckled asbestos tile. It has a cubical shelf. It had the original stove a cook top in it when we bought it in 93. It was a Coloric wall unit and we couldn't find the parts to fix it when it broke. I loved that oven it had a constant pilot light.

Wow. I was recording a recipe that had Worcestershire sauce in it for an audiobook yesterday. It took me a few tries, & am still not 100% pleased with the end result, but I felt it was the best I could do!
i realized that almost every single piece of sewing and knitting supplies i recieved or bouht in the last two years is in some shade of teal and/or in a nice variety of warm coloured wood with some light brass accents so i figured i would decorate the entire room in a late 50s-60s style quite floral and picturesque style: think bewitched meet the sound of music in Arendelle but painted by eyvind earle (the man who designed the backgrounds in sleeping beauty). I also have a 1925 german sewing machine with great lotus flowers and nice stylised flower motifs (from that middle point between art nouveau and art deco where the intricate swirls morphed into a somewhat more streamlined yet still figurative but nicely contrasted motifs). At first i was going for a 30s aesthetic but knowing myslef it would have morphed into an 80s bathroom looking room really quick and my issue with teal is that it tends to look too classical and antiquated for me so playing with the hopeful and soothing tastes of the 50s might be the way to go
Loved mercurochrome growing up! That stuff could heal anything! Lol.. I loved your video makes me miss my childhood! Try not to undervalue the era! I know it seems that women were dragged down with being barefoot and pregnant was the phrase back when but I think technology was trying to make life in the home better for families and women not bad or we would still be stuck in the kitchen. My dad was awesome in kitchen and helped where he could in our home. I hate it when men get a bad rap for that era and time, they worked hard to make sure their families didn’t need or want for anything, at least that was my dad! My dad respected my mother and marriages lasted longer than they do today, anymore marriage is disposable, no one wants to stick it out in bad times! My parents were married for 64years they went through hardships tough times and neither one gave up on the other! They supported each other! my mother didn’t work outside the home til I, the baby was in high school and I am very grateful for that!!!! Very thankful for that era and generation of people we don’t have that anymore!
I think it’s ok to appreciate and even love an era while also pointing out it wasn’t perfect. ❤️ I don’t want to live in the 1950s and I do value many of the things that came from the 50s but there were also many toxic things then just as there are now. 😉 I just think it’s important to mention because there are many people who will justify terrible things in the name of “that’s just how it was” instead of acknowledging that it WAS a bad thing. That doesn’t negate the good things that come from our past!
Nawg-uh-hide is how it is pronounced. In your 1924 videos I noticed your Dessert Rose plates and one of my aunts has (or did have) the whole set. My mom has a hand-painted set of china that my grandmother (her mother-in-law) did for her as a wedding present. It is a huge set, and absolutely lovely. It's more delicate than the Dessert Rose, but is similar.
Me sitting in my super depressing dark wood cabinet kitchen watching this and agreeing. I also, despise wood paneling, but I painted ours a very light grey and it is totally acceptable. Almost, cute. Almost. Lol!
Ink-fill pens are hard to die, even with disposables and ball-point pens being so common-place now. They tend to write a lot nicer, required for any type of calligraphy, and expensive pens for businessmen tend to still need dipping/filling. King Charles III still uses them.

I didn't like mid century modern for most of my life. when I was in my 20s I like antiques. After my 20s I liked a mix - ecclectic style. Now, I LOVE mid century modern - I even made a mid century modern doll house! haha All this just to say, your tastes change with age.
I think it was fifties first but women always wore dresses pretty much. I grew up in sixties and I wore dresses always except for play. Play we wore pants or shorts or bubbles. In the late seventies, early eighties wearing pants under dresses was a thing for about three years.
Interesting about the modern- looking furnishings and non-50s looking women. We definitely have stereotypes of eras in our minds which are only partly true.

And yes, that carpet everywhere was a reap trend. My in-laws have a bathroom they built in the '60s with thick, green carpet covering the ENTIRE floor. And my grandparents had a Pepto-Bismol pink bathroom with white carpet covering all the floorspace. So weird--and impractical!

Ive only just discovered your videos, I love your vibe, you wear the loviest dresses. My mum was a 1950s house wife and to this day its my dna to care for my home, much as she did.
As I age I very much value the homekeeping skills my mum taught me unbeknownst to her. Although when she finally got a freezer it liberated her from the kitchen overnight and we lived from frozen foods in the 1960 /70s no harm ever came to us xx
I have several sets of dishes, love to entertain! Setting a pretty table brings me a lot of joy. I actually don't do it for myself. I like to do it for other people. So,, in my opinion, thrift away and get those dishes!

I learned to love knotty pine paneling from retro renovation blog. It is actually heart pine. I bought an early 60s house with it in the kitchen/den and a bedroom. It’s a pretty color especially with all the light from the huge south-facing windows. Not too dark or too brown. Really pops against white appliances and Carrara marble-look LVT floor. Like a vacation cabin year round!
I totally want to have seasonal dishes too! And curtains!! And decor. Like Christmas decor because winter decor and is out all winter and Halloween decor becomes fall daecor

I'm 70 so I lived most of the stuff in your magazine... lol. At least shag carpet had not yet become a thing. I don't like carpet either. We bought a new mobile home in the 70's and believe it or not... it even had shag carpet in the bathroom & up the side of the bathtub. What a nitemare!! lol Thanks for the memories ... Glenda
i love old dishes too, i have a collection of thrifted, floral print plates edged in gold , beautiful, mismatched but they go together because they are all florals, the problem is you cant put them in the microwave because of the gold, so i end up replating everything, accumulate double the dishes to wash.. grrrr... its a whole thing, a pain, honestly.... i noticed you have the franciscan desert rose pieces.. they are one of my faves.. i had the water and o.j. glasses, a random teacup/ saucer and the odd dessert plate or two.. i wish i still had them.. i also used to find the brand noritake all the time but anyway, yeah i have individual pieces and im thinking .. im getting old!!! lol... ive started curling my hair and wearing head scarves again due to your influence!!!! im 51.... its funny to observe that older people embraced the more casual approach in dress, decor, lifestyle just everything.. it gets a bit old after years but it is fun to " play dress up".. gotta love the modern conveniences and being able to run to the store without taking an hour to get dolled up!!!! i wonder how many housewives had outside help or was that only in the movies??

That cabinet fridge was a real thing. Very cool, but they were super heavy. I have some of that Franciscan if you want it. I already HAVE seasonal dish sets, so I don't need to keep them. 🤣😂🤣
These videos are so much fun! It's a lot of fun to window shop through these magazines, and imagine what I would do if I was shopping then. Some of the decor still is in style, we just match it with other things and it's interesting to see what we kept and didn't.
Also, I live in a house from 1954 that has a lot of original things still intact about it (the walls are light mint green!), and can attest that plain faced dark brown wood cabinets are possibly the most boring and depressing thing you could put in a kitchen (21:53). They weirdest part about them? They work with very few decor schemes, because they're such a statement unto themselves, what with their knotty wood faces and dark stain, but also wouldn't be improved by painting, because it just highlights their extremely basic construction.

I just subscribed. I love your style!!!! I have just acquired a boat load of old magazines and a retro 1968 Better Homes and Gardens Decorating 5 ring binder book with so many cool pics of the late 60s. One problem I have is that there is a musty smell, so I have noted them all winter in plastic bins with special odor removing rocks. Also decided to put the book out in the sun today. My plan is to make it an altered junk journal but not sure how thick it would wind up being.

Loved the chatty vid! I noticed you commented on short hairstyle and said something about not usual for 50s. That style was very popular. (June Allyson) You might note that all the women in magazine had short hair and most stars of that era had short hair. (Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner) teen girls had ponytail styles and longer hair.
What I meant was, I don’t associate short straight hair with straight short bangs with the 50s. I know short was the vibe and most stars had short hair but generally we think of curled hair

the ad w/ the kitchen table that u thought she was wearing a dress w/ pants? no. the "dress" is actually a long matching top that buttoned only around the waist & then hung open. very popular. u will see it in numerous movies where the star is playing some well off lady of the house, usually w/ a cigarette & a cocktail while waiting for hubby to come home from work & dinner is ready....i remember seeing lauren bacall wearing one & also lucille ball. i cant remember the movies tho...but it was very popular & so stylish looking. & they always had pockets & it was worn w/ slipper style HEELS! darling!.

I loved this video!! It was really fun to go through the magazine with your commentary. I have a collection of vintage magazines and it's always fascinating and hilarious to read them. One thing I've noticed is that the articles and stories are a lot shorter in modern magazines. It's like we lost our ability to sit and read for a long time.
My house was built in 59 the kitchen is original the counters are a brown speckled laminin. The original floor is underneath the vinal and it is gray speckled asbestos tile. It has a cubical shelf. It had the original stove a cook top in it when we bought it in 93. It was a Coloric wall unit and we couldn't find the parts to fix it when it broke. I loved that oven it had a constant pilot light.

Nog-a-hide, kid proof vinyl fabric. It was thick but a fabric product. Waterproof and easy to wipe off. Very popular up until the 70s.
Wow. I was recording a recipe that had Worcestershire sauce in it for an audiobook yesterday. It took me a few tries, & am still not 100% pleased with the end result, but I felt it was the best I could do!

i realized that almost every single piece of sewing and knitting supplies i recieved or bouht in the last two years is in some shade of teal and/or in a nice variety of warm coloured wood with some light brass accents so i figured i would decorate the entire room in a late 50s-60s style quite floral and picturesque style: think bewitched meet the sound of music in Arendelle but painted by eyvind earle (the man who designed the backgrounds in sleeping beauty). I also have a 1925 german sewing machine with great lotus flowers and nice stylised flower motifs (from that middle point between art nouveau and art deco where the intricate swirls morphed into a somewhat more streamlined yet still figurative but nicely contrasted motifs). At first i was going for a 30s aesthetic but knowing myslef it would have morphed into an 80s bathroom looking room really quick and my issue with teal is that it tends to look too classical and antiquated for me so playing with the hopeful and soothing tastes of the 50s might be the way to go

Loved mercurochrome growing up! That stuff could heal anything! Lol.. I loved your video makes me miss my childhood! Try not to undervalue the era! I know it seems that women were dragged down with being barefoot and pregnant was the phrase back when but I think technology was trying to make life in the home better for families and women not bad or we would still be stuck in the kitchen.
My dad was awesome in kitchen and helped where he could in our home. I hate it when men get a bad rap for that era and time, they worked hard to make sure their families didn’t need or want for anything, at least that was my dad! My dad respected my mother and marriages lasted longer than they do today, anymore marriage is disposable, no one wants to stick it out in bad times! My parents were married for 64years they went through hardships tough times and neither one gave up on the other! They supported each other! my mother didn’t work outside the home til I, the baby was in high school and I am very grateful for that!!!! Very thankful for that era and generation of people we don’t have that anymore!
I think it’s ok to appreciate and even love an era while also pointing out it wasn’t perfect. ❤️ I don’t want to live in the 1950s and I do value many of the things that came from the 50s but there were also many toxic things then just as there are now. 😉 I just think it’s important to mention because there are many people who will justify terrible things in the name of “that’s just how it was” instead of acknowledging that it WAS a bad thing. That doesn’t negate the good things that come from our past!

Nawg-uh-hide is how it is pronounced. In your 1924 videos I noticed your Dessert Rose plates and one of my aunts has (or did have) the whole set. My mom has a hand-painted set of china that my grandmother (her mother-in-law) did for her as a wedding present. It is a huge set, and absolutely lovely. It's more delicate than the Dessert Rose, but is similar.

Household cleaning tools in those days were extremely heavy, including the vacuums.
Ink-fill pens are hard to die, even with disposables and ball-point pens being so common-place now. They tend to write a lot nicer, required for any type of calligraphy, and expensive pens for businessmen tend to still need dipping/filling. King Charles III still uses them.

I didn't like mid century modern for most of my life. when I was in my 20s I like antiques. After my 20s I liked a mix - ecclectic style. Now, I LOVE mid century modern - I even made a mid century modern doll house! haha All this just to say, your tastes change with age.
I think it was fifties first but women always wore dresses pretty much. I grew up in sixties and I wore dresses always except for play. Play we wore pants or shorts or bubbles. In the late seventies, early eighties wearing pants under dresses was a thing for about three years.
If that hamper is metal I just bought it! It looks the same anyway.
