It's not that they let him escape as much as Bin Laden holding leverage over ISI. Al Qaeda and Taliban are different groups but the members are interchanging according to who holds more weight. To make it simple, ISI created Taliban, Al Qaeda taught Taliban IED mechanism, Al Qaeda killed Ahmad Massoud (Taliban's opposition in Afghanistan). Connect the dots.
Also you have to remember, America didn't kill Laden in another Nuclear country in the silence of the night, as much as ISI trading him for favours. Bin Laden was considered a dead weight at that time. It wasn't a win over terrorism but a political win for Obama. It was symbolic at best.
This was a great interview. I’m studying Islam and in particular, the four waves of jihad throughout the history of the religion and it is fascinating to see how it’s been used (and abused) by the faithful (and the totalitarian project). Wonderful to have another great researcher on my list for resources! Off subject: please consider interviewing Christopher Partridge at Lancaster University. I’m reading his two-volume set The Re-Enchantment of the West and it’s so good. He also writes about pop music, new religious movements, the occult. He’s very interesting!
An interesting episode of Islamic history, for you, would be when the second-generation Afghan Muslims learned, and helped in compilation/authentication of Islamic sciences in Baghdad City, they notified cousins back home that nowhere in Quran or Hadith has it been decreed that only Arabs should rule the Muslim lands - you can guess what happened next. ;)

@11:48: About the linguistic pluralism - The Afghani remark is quite interesting, as the "i" (ē) is thrown in to group/categorize, in a sense. There are many Afghans residing in Iran, currently, are all referred to as Afghani. I wonder if the offensive aspect exists within that particular culture. its sped up
To be fair, Robert mentioned figures in conflicts which is very upsetting, there is no justification whatsoever that thousands of children to die from bombings and sanctions, thank you Robert for informing the public
It should have been over at Tora Bora Dec 2001 . Why the politicians decided to let Bin Laden escape is the question.
It gave them something to justify the invasion I think
Taliban offered to Bin Laden him up to end the war before it started. US wasn't interested.

For historical continuity I think your podcasts need dates of publication.
I would reccomend also looking to Said Nursi’s perspective of jihad.
An interesting episode of Islamic history, for you, would be when the second-generation Afghan Muslims learned, and helped in compilation/authentication of Islamic sciences in Baghdad City, they notified cousins back home that nowhere in Quran or Hadith has it been decreed that only Arabs should rule the Muslim lands - you can guess what happened next. ;)
Ill call the complaint line and give them an ear full hahaha
This episode has been out for several weeks now so not many viewing the comments section anymore but here is an interesting documentary to checkout. it has two parts... Afghanistan: The Great Game - A Personal View by Rory Stewart
please... more people like this!!! thank you
Wonderful! Informative. Thank you, both!
I love Robert Crews. His books are excellent. But please take a speech class. So many details are lost because the cadence of your speech is off the dial.
Strange cadence
Very interesting guest, looks trough another perspective(honest one). I like that!
I'd love to hear what Dick Cheney has to say about all of this when he agrees to appear in public. His thoughts on Halliburton, Building 7, the "Weapons of Mass Destruction", (2) 20 year wars, and the abolishment of our personal privacy.
Lol he will never agree to an interview without knowing every question first
Hopefully Errol Morris can get him into a chair, staring down the barrel of the interrortron.
Great podcast Lex.
Brilliant interview
Exceptional window on a reality we rarely see.
Thanks for bringing this topic up lex. Great content. Glad you are who you doing what you do.
I wish he would talk more slowly and clearly
Robert crews views are very balanced
@11:48: About the linguistic pluralism - The Afghani remark is quite interesting, as the "i" (ē) is thrown in to group/categorize, in a sense. There are many Afghans residing in Iran, currently, are all referred to as Afghani. I wonder if the offensive aspect exists within that particular culture.
Any Persians out here that wanna correct me? lol
This sounds very interesting, but the guest’s statico and disjointed speaking makes it impossible to listen to. Disappointed.
As an Afghan-American I would like to make corrections.

Afghaanistaan is the country, Afghans are the people and Afghani is the money!
Thank you for the informative interview.
So I tried listening on spotify as I went to bed- turns out the dude talks so fast I had to play this at 0.75 on RUclips to fully catch everything he was saying lol.
And then playing this at 0.75 makes Lex sound like a turtle. There's no in between xD
