  • I’m proud to share episode 17 of The People We Meet. The Liberties.
    It’s taken me an age to make it as I've been so busy, but also because the more I work on it, the more I realise how special the area is and I want to make sure I do it justice.
    The Liberties is an amazing part of Dublin. There’s a lot of change going on in the area, some of it good, some of it bad and I wanted this episode to be a snapshot in time. There’s a rawness and beauty here that is unique and I hope the area holds onto that.
    I’ve lived on the edge of The Liberties for years but it’s only after making this that I feel like I actually know the place.
    The people in the piece were incredibly kind, open and honest. A huge thank you to them. They made it.
    A huge thank you also to those who have worked on this with me.
    I love making episodes about creative people who make something from nothing but there’s way more to life than this... and that’s where I want the next episodes of TPWM go. Focusing on real life.
    Final word... TPWM has been an unbelievable way for me to find out what i’m really interested in and I’d highly recommend that you do the same.
    Final final word... I too hate those long, overly emotional posts created specifically to get likes. So i’m sorry about this. I’m not a prick. I promise.

    I've first lived in the Liberties when I moved to Dublin 7 years ago. As an immigrant, working 2 years at Caffe Noto in Thomas St. One of my favourites regulars, a lady from the Liberties noticed I lost few pounds very quickly. Next day she had a tray with 20 eggs from her own chickens and until now we meet for coffees. That's how lovely people are there.

    Been living in Earl Street South and then Reginald Street 2013-2015. I am Italian, now I am back in my country. I felt at home there and The Liberties are still here with me in my heart. Thank you Meath Street, Thomas Street, The Coombe, Pimlico and around 😎

    Reminds me of Glasgow. Real working class people have a genuine warmth and generosity and community spirit that money can’t buy. Great wee film.

    Trying to hold back a few tears here. I left when i was 9 to come to Manchester. Born in Watkins Squ my earliest memory is living in a flat on Meath Street opposite the chipper run by Ray (he had a birth mark on his face) before moving to No2 Donore Ave with my mum and dad. Went to school in Weaver Squ. My dad was a furrier and had a factory on Meath Place. All a lifetime ago.

    Gentrification is happening all around the south inner city. The worst part of it is the middle class are moving in and looking down on people who lived there all their lives

    • @Paulco67
      @Paulco67 10 месяцев назад

      Not even gentrification is the worst issue. They will bombard the area with soulless apartment blocks and destroy the community within 15-20 years. 14 story block going up by Echlin St as I write.

    Being born in Haringey to Irish parents from Cavan,my Granny was a Dub,so when we could as alot did we would spend school holidays as they say 'Back Home,as their was 7 of us,a few of us would stay the first week with my Mum in The Liberties & the rest would go straight to Cavan & we would go up a week later,,I loved the place,Granny lived in the old tenement flats,Guinness made them in Patrick St in I think was called the Coomb all though the 80s,,,never a dull moment,used to love walking through the shithole alley ways to a big market,some days it wasn't unusual to see afew fights in the streets,but the general feel was mind your own business & your fine,that was in the day,I was streetwise enough to stay in the flat at night 😂,Oh yeah plus when we got in the taxi at airport the driver said you must have the wrong address not even I go there 😂 I thought it was a great area myself.

    This is over romanticized. I grew up 1/4 mile away and while most of the people are very sound, there was serious poverty in the 70s and 80s. Oliver Bond Flats had some very tough clients, indeed….
