I'll never forget, one day I was feeling really sick mid-day, and told my boss I was leaving early, and started down the hall. He ran ahead of me, blocking my way, telling me I needed to stay. I asked him to move out of my way. He said, "You can't leave until your shift is over or you find someone to come in and replace you." I threw up all over him. He tried to jump back, but I got his pants and shoes. He was furious. I said " I told you I was sick, and to get out of my way. You physically prevented me from getting to the bathroom in time. Your fault". The entire office was laughing at him.

Pro tip: If you call in sick for a few days and your boss demands you get a doctors note to "verify" your illness. When you go to the doc for the note, ask for ADDITIONAL days off to recover and then tell your boss you have to stay out LONGER per the doc and thank him for telling you to see the doc.

That actually happened to me, but not by my request. I woke up one morning sick as a dog. Went to the doc's, and he put me off for a week. The company said I had to go to see a company doc the next day. She took one look at me and put me off for 2 weeks, lol. Would love to have been a fly on the wall when the office were told - which their doc did, not me.

If you’re fired over missing work and it was a doctors order to do so due to being sick or an injury and they fire you for said reason that opens a whole case for a lawsuit. I was a teacher (retired now). Over one weekend, I had gotten sick and my intestinal tract was severely inflamed and swollen. I went to the emergency room on Sunday afternoon and was scheduled for an emergency endoscopy. I warned my principal and chief administrator that this was occurring and that I wouldn’t be in for the next two days. I had already lined up a substitute teacher and filled them in on everything.
Both administrators had the gall to ask me to put off the procedure until our next school vacation (Spring Break), which was 6 weeks away. I politely declined that and told them that I would have a doctor’s note for them when I got back. Doctor over heard that conversation and wrote me a note for 2 weeks off. He wasn’t very happy with them.

Immediately i was told to stop working and put the job back into the list and close the focs i was working on. Then i was told to go and do what i need to do, be safe and they would call me on the hour for a welfare check. If i needed sick leave they would take care of it ASAP. I was fine after two hours and was back at my work, only at my insistence and only after I'd eaten the lunch my manager had organised to be delivered. Otherwise they would have my VPN disabled. Of course, some companies just flat out ignore this and make you put in shifts of 18-20 hours or more but you can threaten to report them for it: just be sure to keep copies of log and other relevant paperwork to make your case in court…

I was on 3 weeks of afternoon shifts and 1 week of nights and when I finally had a day shift he would ask me to stay until 7pm in the one week I wanted to be with my family.
This one week I had enough! he gave me a written warning for dropping off the wrong paper to a printing press. We had 2 kinds that looked the same and they didn't put forestry on the pick slip so I delivered Non forestry. it was wrong he gave me a written warning and said don't forget you are on until 7pm. I said no worries he left at 4pm and I followed him out of the gate he said where are you going I said to get food. I just didn't say it was at my house!
The next day he asked why I didn't work until 7 they needed me. I said I was so stressed over my warning i couldn't possibly stay. It was a good night being home with my family.

If I call out sick on Monday , come in to work on Tuesday to try and help out the team but feel worse on Wednesday and call out , that is 2 occurrences .

I used to work in a call center and if they sent you home for being sick you didn’t take an “occurrence”. I threw up at work and spent 20 minutes arguing with my manager. She said I should leave on my own and take an occurrence. I kept declining saying, I’ll just finish my shift then. She kept saying, I can’t have you throwing up here so you should choose to go home. I eventually won.

I remember I told my boss i wasn’t feeling well and I think I have Covid and I messaged her hours before my shift about it since Covid was going around at the time and I was running a fever and had no sense of smell i immediately knew that’s what it was. And her response was no your fine you have to come into work today it’s probably just a simple sinus infection. I was proud of myself for sticking up to her, I said no I know what I have and I’m staying out and getting tested anyways. Which is a good thing I did bcs I was a waitress and could’ve gotten so many people sick.

At my job I make my own hours. Rn, I have serious health issues, and some days are worse than others. If I have something scheduled and need the day off I just need to let them know at least 2hrs in advance so they have enough time to get my client rescheduled. But they're very understanding and I like that about them. 😊😊😊❤❤❤

This sort of reminds me of when i asked for bereavement leave because my mother-in-law passed. They APPROVED it for 2 days. On last break, about an hour or two before the end of my shift HR comes up and says MIL doesn't count for bereavement and asked if i still wanted those two days off, unpaid.
It was so last minute i just said yes

Well... for one, I've never been one to disclose ANYTHING that's personal about myself regarding why I request ANY time off... it's my time to handle MY business. So it needs to be on a "need to know basis" before I begin sharing anything. Imagine revealing all that only to be denied for your own time and then the fact that they know all your personal business... and really, I think that's what prompt people to tell their business... they think it'll make a difference on whether or not their request gets debied or approved. Problem with that is managers begin to get that "entitled to know your business" attitude and think everyone should disclose factors about their personal lives and if you don't, you're considered anti-social.

Employers don't have to give you time off for a medical appointment. You do that on your own time. If you or a family member has a long term illness, then they may need to allow you short term disability or FMLA, depending upon the size of the company, etc.

In some states, they can fire you for no reason/any reason and not tell you. I live in one 😅 so it’s a way they can say they ‘didn’t fire you for that reason’ . But legally if you can prove they denied or fired you for it, the employer can be sued I’ve been told

My supervisor was astonished I asked for the rest of the day off from work after I literally stopped breathing and almost went into cardiac arrest during my dental surgery. I Teams messaged the horrific ordeal and explained how the dental surgeon accidentally placed the breathing apparatus upside down. My supervisor said “ I’m sorry that sounds awful but you need to see your clients. “
I’m a social worker. I went back to work though my mouth was frozen and I had a terrible scare that morning.
Of course when my supervisor needs time away she takes as much time as possible.
I rarely take time off too.
I’m staying there because it pays sooo welll. Social workers can make a lot of money .

I remember once when I was a teen at one of my first jobs at a dunkins I tried calling out sick cuz I had been up all night with a cough, stomach ache, runny nose, headache, fever, throwing up, diarrhea. And my boss said if I didn't come in I would be fired. So I went in anyway. Less then 2 hours into my shift my boss told me to go home cuz apparently a ton of customers saw how sick I was and complained to the manager why I was at work if I was as sick as I was cuz they heard me coughing and saw me running to the bathroom every 10 mins to either have diarrhea or throw up and I looked very pale and disoriented

My supervisor bullied me into staying after I told her I literally threw up on the side of the road on my way to work. She was bitching under her breath about people calling in sick and how she was there with a head cold. Like maybe that's why people are getting sick left and right. 😅 It took the safety supervisor walking into the bathroom while I threw up another two times to advise my supervisor to send me home. Like my supervisor really thought I was making that shit up or something. Had to have another people verify I was in fact sick. 😂 even as a supervisor myself, if someone came to me saying they were not feeling good or throwing up, I'd tell them to go the fuck home. relax and rest, don't worry about work. We'll figure out it without you. This job ain't worth destroying your health over.

I wasn’t even treated like this working at McDonald’s as a teenager! The only time I’ve gone to work sick is when it was of my own doing (hung over) and ONE time, because I had already gone to the doctor, was already on antibiotics, and knew that what I had going on that day was of EXTREME importance. My boss didn’t force me or guilt trip me. Because of me attending that single day, we got that $22M government contract. Yeah, everyone’s jobs were riding on that presentation.

"You know, per policy, you have to submit your PTO two weeks in advance." I remember having this conversation. The thing is, the policy doesn't say that there can't be some leniency on their part, their hands aren't tied. I was much more willing to go out of my way for my previous supervisor who would have simply said, "You can take tomorrow off if you can get someone in to cover for you." I almost forgot about the boss that never answered his messages so you couldn't even ask him for time off, emergency or otherwise. It's sad how one change in management can completely change the whole complexion of a workplace for the worse and rarely for the better.
