The Jedi Council of this era was made up of complete hypocrites. Privately in the game they will tell you that they regret exiling you and maybe they should rescind their original judgement but when you get to finally meet them they once again show their arrogance and announce that their judgement remains the same. You would think that after two very disastrous wars, and a Jedi purge the Council would of learned something but they didn't.

Chris Avellone, the main writer felt that Star wars was a very black and white almost hypocritcal series in the lore deparment when regarding sith and jedi. I felt adding in these sort of themes were his attempt to realise morality within the star wars universe.

One interesting note to speak on behalf of the council however is this; They very likely were right to be inactive during the Mandlorian wars, and to heed the Jedi to not intervene because they sensed that the real threat, the one behind the mandalore conflicts had yet to reveal themself, it was only after Revan defeated Mandalore the Great that he came to understand this.

    • @Creixhitme
      @Creixhitme 7 лет назад +21

Nothing in KOTOR2 is supposed to be so cut and dried. The Jedi Council's failing wasn't that they were hypocritical, it's that their world view was too narrow. To the Jedi, life and the Force are inextricably intertwined, so the Exile, who is able to act outside of the fatalistic influence of the Force, and affecting nearby beings who are in tune with it, is dangerous. All they can see is a lifeless, disruptive husk, capable of disrupting the natural order which is central to their beliefs. The Council's failing is that they were unable to step back and consider that perhaps the Force isn't equivalent to life. From their perspective, they were genuinely trying to take the most effective course of action in defeating the Sith and preserving life, but their ideology kept them from conceiving that their might be a bigger picture.
Kreia is intended to be a sympathetic character, but she's also not "the good guy". She didn't kill those three masters because their misguidance would cause more evil, she killed them because they failed to appreciate, and endangered, the manifestation and vindication of her ideals--the Exile. All she cares about is shaping the Exile to be free of conflicts and disharmony, so s/he can be able to act without the weight of regret. There's a reason why her alignment is pure grey.

I’ve still never played a game with so much philosophical depth before, and probably never will again....which is sad in a way. KOTOR got me into gaming by combining interesting characters and combat system with an alluring story filled with mystery.
This game though...was amazing....but also immensely frustrating. Not only because it was so obviously incomplete, but because it likely will be the last kind of game with this sort of storytelling and depth.
learning that the production was rushed merely to fit it into the Xbox life cycle instead of spending the extra time to port the game for the 360 and finish it was painful. I used to read some Star Wars EU fiction as a kid, and none of it gets close to this games depth and characters.
There’s so much depth in this game. No true villain, but a self discovery for both the player and character to try and understand the motivations of all the characters. The Jedi council. Kreia. None of them are truly wrong. All are justified both by their words and in their hearts.
That’s what makes this whole scene so intriguing. That every motivation has nuance. That your leveling up and getting stronger is actually an important plot point of the game and not merely a mechanism. That the worlds travelled have a level of realistic grittiness and depression, yet hopefulness at the same time. That the factions and side quests encountered have realistic implications (such as the Ithorians and Czerka). That the mystery of the entire game has a larger purpose that leads into the first game, and really expands on the motivations of Revan, setting up such an intriguing sequel that really opens up the imagination to completely new possibilities.
Maybe no game will ever reach this sort of elevated writing, but I can always replay KOTOR 2. It’s the closest I’ll get to where I think games could really achieve (a better storytelling medium than even books).

You should check out Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer expansion, if you haven't already. The former was written by Chris Avellone, who was the lead on this game, and is considered his magnum opus. The latter is a fantasy story that is almost a retelling of Kotor 2, but greatly expanding on the concept of an entity that can devour the 'force'

_It is said that the Force has a will, it has a destiny for us all. I wield it, but it uses us all, and that is abhorrent to me. Because I hate the Force. I hate that it seems to have a will, that it would control us to achieve some measure of balance, when countless lives are lost. But in you… I see the potential to see the Force die, to turn away from its will. And that is what pleases me. You are beautiful to me, exile. A dead spot in the Force, an emptiness in which its will might be denied._
There is no balance, turn away from the Force.

Only through the sacrifices of many Jedi
Will the Order cleanse the sins done to the nameless.
For the danger of the past is not past, but sleeps in an egg.
There will come a day, when the egg will hatch,
And when it does, it will threaten the galaxy entire.
When the Force itself sickens, past and future must split and combine.
A Chosen One shall come, born of no father,
And through him will the danger be destroyed
And ultimate balance in the Force be restored.
So Anakin brought balance to the Force. There is balance now.

  • @lairdmichaelscott

Somehow it was even more poignant where you chose the darker path, defeating each master as you found them, taking their secrets.
Then you are promised all that remains of the Jedi will be awaiting you in the ruins on Dantooine.
When you finally make your way there, you cautiously enter the overgrown courtyard . . . only to find it quite empty. The music reaches a soft crescendo of nigh unbearable regret and loss.
And the courtyard remains empty save for the sounds of the birds and insects because, while all that remains of the Jedi is there, nothing of the Jedi remains.

If LucasArts hadn't been such control freaks to Obsidian and rushed them into releasing the game early, this could've been a masterpiece of a game and regarded as even better than the first one. Even after you go through all this pain to reassemble the council, finding them and trying to help them, for them to give you the same judgement felt like a slap in the face. In light of what Zez Kai-Ell and Kavar said previously, yet having no strength nor conviction to back it up...in time what this shows me is they are even more fearful than you were, and not smarter for their time. If the remaining jedi council is this far fallen and making such judgement from ignorances, then perhaps it's just as well they met this end. I think the released version was still good! There were a few major plot points left unanswered (HK Factory, where are all your friends in Malachor?), but as a whole it was a slightly different experience. It was a lot darker, and more solitary, but I think that has its merits as well. There are also a couple conversations which would definitely have been cut in post-production. Atris's conversation after you whoop her ass had some non-sequiturs, and here the Jedi Council just chillin and smokin a J while Kreia lectures them is a little unbelievable. Still, the atmosphere and voice acting here is so lovely that I think this scene is fine.

The Lost Jedi were assholes in this game, but it was necessary. The Jedi Exile was referred to as the Death of the Force. When she committed genocide at Malachor V killing countless Mandalorians along with her own soldiers, she could literally hear all the thousands of individuals dying in horrible horrible agony. She was in the vicinity and she was literally rendered deaf to the force because it is truly impossible for a Force-Sensitive to hear the force over such unlimited pain. As the Jedi had said Malachor was a Crucible for the exile and many potential others that wanted to learn how to unconsciously feed on the life force of others thus getting stronger in the Force and transmitting all of their horrible pain into your fighting style. Because of that hell that she turned the planet into, Darth Revan used that site to corrupt countless Jedi and other regular individuals to his side. He then used the Star Forge to corrupt and make an invincible Sith Armada. The Jedi Exile's actions had literally taught this new breed of Sith everything they need to know on how to kill the Force. The man who would become Darth nihilus was one of the only survivors on Malachor V. Now imagine being able to unconsciously control literally everyone and have people follow you when you only intended to help everyone. This is why all of the bonds you make in the game mean nothing at the end and you have to live in self-imposed Exile at the end. Now I am starting to see some parallels that they made with Luke's character in The Last Jedi namely the self-imposed Exile part.

Then perhaps now you can see the horrid butchering of this legacy IN that reference. The Exile witnessed... something impossible, as well as, being the catalyst of it... THAT is what it took, the sheer amount is... mind-boggling, and yet the Disney versions of "cutting ones self from the Force" is "because I saw one dude being bit EEVOL". How could one equate the massacre, NOT instant massacre, mind you, to a single fleeting moment? How could one even imagine to say that they are equal?
Furthermore, do you recall WHY the Exile can feel the Force? I keep saying that The Force is a leech, it's not intrinsic to life, as life was there before the Force, and it will be there after it. It's been mentioned in KotOR I that it can do so, and there were signs in the movies themselves of a similar event. But coming back to the Exile, the cut was permanent, she DOESN'T feel the Force, no... she's tied to those around her, she's alive THROUGH them, and through that life bond, LITERAL life-bond, she feels the winds of the Force, and through them as well, manipulates the Force.
If Nihilus used the attachments to drain the life, the Exile method was tethering. Making a sort of "net" using the bonds she made. She's not stronger just because of the death she caused, but because of the forging of those bonds through the actions in the game.

What about when kreia says " it was because .. you had no choice" .. what is the deal with that. I have looked for videos but haven't seen that version. Anyone able to enlighten me? lol

cofside I believe she says that when your character has a dark sided alignment. It's incredibly rare to see that line because most players who save the Jedi Masters do so on light sided playthroughs, but it's entirely possible to do a dark sided playthrough while saving them.

thanks for the response. What you say is probably right, I don't understand fully that much of this part of the game. The other thing Kreia says here is that "you were afraid" .. not sure I get that. So I suppose the dark side one says "had no choice" is there a third ? I have dissected this game , play through with every conceivable method to see if I can unlock everything. IF you have done this too lets keep in touch.

What the Council is saying, is that after Malachor V, and the huge wound caused with the deaths of tens of thousands of Jedi, Republic soldiers and Mandalorians, and along the journey, as more and more people get killed by Meetra, she gets stronger as the hunger inside her becomes satisfied.

This scene is far better on the light side path. The dark side path its a waste of time since the masters are already dead.
