    If you haven't reversed a trailer before, or if you haven't done it in a while, give yourself a chance to practice in a large empty space.
    The bigger the trailer the easier it is, so a bit of frustration working with a smaller trailer is perfectly normal.
    Here's a few tips to get you on the right path!

    When I was taught how to back up a trailer, if you hold the steering wheel at the bottom and steer from the bottom of the steering wheel, you don't have to worry about that whole turning in the opposite direction thing. You can turn in the direction that you want the trailer to go. Give it a try the next time you need to back up a trailer.

      Another little truck I use is relying on front end swing..... where the front is swinging is where the trailer will go

      That’s exactly the way you want to hold the wheel, or use your palm as I do. Small increments on the wheel.

    The average person can master reversing a trailer in about 10 seconds with this little life hack. To get the hang of how this works, firstly get your car and trailer lines up - as easy as driving as far as say 5 metres in a straight line and stopping. Now put your dominant hand in the very centre of the BOTTOM of the steering wheel, watch your mirrors and start reversing 'very slowly'. Now while watching the trailer in your mirrors, if the trailer needs to go to the left, simply push your hand (that's at the BOTTOM of the steering wheel) to the left, if the trailer needs to go to the right, push your hand to the right. You'll master it in seconds. Basically, you just push your hand in the direction that you want the trailer to go. It's super easy.
    Who'da thunk, :) :) :)

    Watching my dad back up a trailer is just tragic... I think the biggest issue with his reversing is that he doesn't understand that once the trailer & truck is straight to keep the steering wheel straight. Small corrections are all that's needed.

    Put your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel when backing: that way, when you turn your hands to the left, (steering wheel moves right) the trailer goes left, turn hands right, (steering wheel goes left) trailer goes right.

    • @nathanjack9359
      @nathanjack9359 7 лет назад +1

      CharlesFockaert I disagree with this method a lot. As a HGV driver I believe that it is far better to eat your humble pie nice and early and learn how to reverse with hands in the normal place. This is because when it comes to doing it in the real world, you have far more flexibility to look out of windows, mirrors, etc. Obviously this is in my humble opinion, each to there own and all that. However I do not know a single UK HGV instructor that will teach the method you noted .

    easiest way to back a trailer is put your hand on the BOTTOM of the steering wheel and the direction you move your hand is the direction the back of the trailer will go makes it really simple and easy to remember...this has been around for 40 yrs in the States,,,guess we are more advanced than the brits ....

    1:04 you voiced this over incorrectly, you say turning to the wheel to the right but when you switch to the outside camera the driver is turning the wheel to the left and vice versa. slight editing mistake that can cause huge confusion

    My brain seriously doesn't comprehend the reverse with a trailer. It seems to go the same direction no matter how I turn. It just does whatever it wants and the wheel is useless. Also turning back and forth trying to get the wheel straight again doesn't work. So confusing. It's like driving and reversing your entire life and then inverting it upside-down under water. It just doesn't register.
