    It's the counter-wound *coils* that get rid of the hum, Mark. The magnets are just flipped to keep the string signal in phase otherwise they'd almost completely cancel out. (And in a Gibson PAF there's only one magnet anyway, the pole pieces are steel dummies that extend from it and help shape the field to intersect with the strings. Not sure offhand about these ones, might be the same -- it's hard to shape alnico into adjustable screw pieces as it's rather brittle so usually when the poles are adjustable they're not actually the magnet itself, just steel screws which are magnetized by the alnico bar magnet hidden underneath them.)
    Magnets don't "pick up" the signal, coils do. The magnet is just there to magnetize the string and create fluctuations in the magnetic field as the string vibrates which is *picked up* by the coils. If the magnetic field doesn't move nothing is picked up, it has to move/fluctuate to induce current in the coil(s). That's why you have to spin an electric generator vs. just putting a permanent magnet near a coil which of course does not produce any current (if it did we'd have infinite free power). And when there's only one coil the environmental hum from all the electrical appliances nearby is picked up. You cancel that out by providing an opposing coil and mixing it, either in parallel but more typically in series, with the sensor coil and having either an opposing magnetic field on the second coil or no magnetic field (making it a "dummy" coil). A single coil pickup would still pick up environmental hum even if you took the magnets right out.
    Strip Mall Physics 101.

      @gusdupree2508 6 лет назад

      Admiral Quality reverse wound style?

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality 6 лет назад +2

      "Reverse" and "counter" being synonyms, yes. That's why when you put a reverse-wound/reverse-polarity middle pickup in a Strat the in-between combo switch positions (2 and 4 on a 5 position switch) hum-cancel. You form a humbucking pickup with the combination of single coils with opposing (there's another synonym) coil winding directions. But you don't create an "out of phase" sound, as the reversed magnet polarity counteracts the reverse winding direction which puts the string signal back into phase with the other pickup. The environmental hum however is not affected by or caused by this static magnetic field (again, you'd still have it with no magnets at all) so it does cancel out.

      Admiral Quality sciencey

    • @AdmiralQuality
      @AdmiralQuality 6 лет назад +1

      If you say so. It's actually really basic stuff. Still, Mark gets it wrong almost every time (and I deliver a physics lecture almost every time). I do appreciate that he's rattling this stuff off the top of his head and it's possible to misspeak, but I think he's got more than a little bit of that guitar player stubbornness and love of old wives' tales/misinformation. He really should take a few minutes to absorb this, it's the fundamentals of how his instrument works.

    • @HBSuccess
      @HBSuccess 6 лет назад +2

      Admiral Quality I tend to agree, he should get this stuff right, but we forgive Mark his trespasses as he forgives those who would trespass against him. And Jen.

    Beautiful axe. So now you know what you need to find next... a Firebird. And along the way, you can find/practice some Rory Gallagher, just for the hell of it.

      Congrats! I played one of the '68 Customs and liked it. Vintage Channel is the same as the '65 Deluxe, I believe. So you've got that base covered. But, also, the '68's Custom Channel gives you more of a raw tweed tone along with reverb. You done good, I think.

      RedGibsonsRock thanks! I hope I did. Although I have this looming feeling that within months I will also have a the '65. Maybe after I grab one of the new Marshalls coming out. Fuck me... Lol
