Kellogg's Cereal for Dinner

  • With the rising cost of food prices a family diner for $1 per person sounds pretty good. The problem was the recommendation came from the CEO of Kellogg's, Gary Pilnick who recommended that dinner consist of Frosted Flakes or Fruit Loops.
    Pilnick went so far as creating a commercial which featured Tony the Tiger chanting with the kids at the dinner table that they wanted the cereal for dinner.
    Evaluating the nutritional content of such a dinner is, unsurprisingly, concerning. The cereal included 15 grams of sugar per serving, above the 12 gram daily recommendation. And, of course, at 150 calories, who's going to eat just one bowl? Needing more than a serving clearly doubles the poor nutrition AND defeats the $1/serving promise.
    There is 1 gram of fiber in the cereal and 1 gram of protein. Considering that an average adult needs 500-700 calories per meal and at least 30 grams of protein and 25-40 grams of protein per day, the cereal recommendation is a nutritional bomb, promising a furthering of all the diseases we are trying to avoid: obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and cognitive decline.
    As an exercise to see if I could do better for a dollar per meal, I came up with a very nutritious alternative, still within the $1 guidelines.
    Canned beans are 35 cents per serving and contain a beautiful 14 grams of fiber and 15 grams of protein. The calorie content is 244. Add that to frozen broccoli at 25 cents per serving and you yield an additional 2 grams of fiber, 50 calories and 2 grams of protein. Finish it off with brown rice and the additional nutrition is 3 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and 108 calories.
    Added together this meal equals 22 grams of protein, 18 grams of fiber, zero sugar and 402 calories. Add a handful of peanuts and you raise the calorie content by 160 calories and 9 grams of protein, achieving 31 grams of protein in total.
    Which is a better choice? There's really no argument and my recommendation is very healthy with good fiber, protein and balanced calories.

    If Kellogs Raisin Bran were organic or non gmo verified, it would be 100% perfect.

    White rice is better than brown. You can still easily eat enough fiber from other foods.

    If the frosted flakes were organic or non gmo verified and you got rid of all the fortified vitamins and minerals, there would be nothing wrong with it. 365 organic corn flakes are good.

    Plain shredded wheat is good for anyone who is not celiac or gluten intolerant which is at least 80-90 % of the population if not more. I ate 2 boxes yesterday which gave me about 130 grams of fiber

      And how much protein and healthy fat did you get from that?🤣 Also, gluten is inflammatory so no thanks!

      ​@kevinmesh5828 110 grams of protein and 16 grams of fat. 30-40 grams of protein a day is already enough. The less fat the better. There is no such thing as eating too little fat. You can only eat too much. 20% of calories from fat should be the maximum and no more than 10% is ideal. I always eat less than 10% fat. Gluten is not inflammatory for most people. Many wheat products have other ingredients in them that are inflammatory, but the wheat itself isn't.
