I read a few off your list, Unbroken, The Sun does Shine and The Only Plane in the Sky, the last two I listened to on audio. The Only Plane in the Sky reminds me so much of that day for I used to work in NYC and was thankfully off that day. I cannot read any of those books in the month it happened I usually read them 1-2 months before the anniversary date. For the date makes me cry every time. The Sun Does Shine was my first audio book and it was an excellent story and made me like listening to books. I just started the book Scratch reading that as an e-book. I put some of the others you listed on my tbr to read in the future.
What struck me most in this video, is how Canadians have so many stories to tell. Such a great list of books, though I haven't read any of them. I would like to read "Finding The Mother Tree" at some point
I agree that Know My Name is impactful. I still think of it. Thank you for recommending Call Me Indian earlier. I read it and loved it! I added the Tomson Highway book to my Reading Across Canada list. Appreciate the great recommendations.
What a great list! I like the way you articulated the impact of Chanel Miller’s memoir. In the early part of that book, I wondered if I was reading trauma porn, but I’m so glad that I stuck with it because she has powerful things to say about the miscarriage of justice and the devastating aftermath of assault. And her prose is flawless.
You read far more non-fiction than I did. I think my list would only include two books! 😁 I do have _The Mother Tree_ on my shelves and really hope to read it this year. 💚
I love these kinds of lists! The Sun Does Shine is an amazing story. Really a powerful book. Pairs really well with Just Mercy and Dead Man Walking. I read all of those in the same time period and I was so glad that I did. I agree that Know My Name is one of the best memoirs that I have read. Not only was the story important but the writing was so impactful.
The Sun Does Shone, Just Mercy and Unbroken are all on my TBR - very much looking forward to getting to them. Call Me Indian was fab!! Really well well memoir. The Only Plane in the Sky sounds like it needs to go on the TBR. We did have a great buddy reading year didn’t we!!
I know I'm late to the convo, it's just always the easiest to find RUclipsrs who read a good amount of diverse nonfiction. Excited I found this video. Added some books, including Call Me Indian, which I'm hoping to read at the beginning of August. If you haven't read Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese, a work of fiction worth looking into.
Happy you found this too. Hope you enjoy Call Me Indian. Keep me posted when you read it. Richard Wagamese is one of my favourite authors. Indian Horse is my favourite of his that I’ve read so far, followed closely by Ragged Company. 😊💙
I agree that Highway is underrated. I only read his Massie lecture, a thin little thing, but the writing was wonderful. Permanently Astonishment is on my shelves.
@@BookwormAdventureGirl hi!! Not around as much but trying to pop in as can- hey send me an invite to the suitable boy Voxer group please- I tried to search for Lindy there but can’t find her
I've not read any of these. I've heard good things from others about The Sun Does Shine and Unbroken, and both sound like something I would enjoy. Best wishes for 2024.
I've read From Scratch, Unbroken (saw the movie as well) and I listened to the audio of The Only Plane in the Sky (heartbreaking). My non-fiction reads for 2023 were: Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life by Arnold Schwartnegger The Road Years: A Memoir, Continued by Rick Mercer Dead Mom Walking by Rachel Matlow From the Streets to the Suites: by Snoop Dogg Ducks by Kate Beaton All of these except for Ducks were audiobooks.
I was bored to tears by The Only Plane In the Sky and DNFed it quite early. I loved Just Mercy and Know My Name. I didn't have many 5-star reads last year (only 2!) but the nonfiction I liked best was Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau.

Thanks Lindy. Agree that she did way more with her book than just tell a story. I thought the writing was very well executed. 😊💙
Finding the Mother Tree & Know My Name is on my super big TBR! Thanks for sharing!!
I hope you are able to get to them and that you enjoy them. 😊💙
You read far more non-fiction than I did. I think my list would only include two books! 😁 I do have _The Mother Tree_ on my shelves and really hope to read it this year. 💚
It wasn’t planned. It just happened that way. I do like to get some nonfiction in. Hope you enjoy The Mother Tree when you get to it. 😊💙

I have read 7 of those on your list. Many good books listed here.
Great minds! Glad you enjoyed some of them. 😊💙
I did enjoy all of them
Great list and I haven’t actually read any of these but interested in just about all of them- 😊
Thanks Kristin. Good to hear from you. 😊💙

Bummer you didn’t get along with The Only Plane. I will have to add Civil Disobedience to the TBR. 😊💙
