    Yeah mon! That's what this is, a "Mon" aka "Mondokoro” or “Kamon". It's a Japanese family crest. I thought one with three cranes looked particularly sick so I decided to have a go at drawing it.
    Paper size: 21x21cm
    Radius of first circle: 5cm

    This crest has been part of Japanese History as a crest during the Shogunate Era of Japan. Before Emperor Meiji took the throne and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration.

    Awesome! Good job! I draw mandalas too, and sometimes "extract" a specific design - always fun when that appears, when you discover it. I would sometimes call the base geometry lines "God's fancy graph paper." I have not drawn for many years. I have not been inspired. Low grade depression permeates. But, having discovered your channel and watching what you do, I have bought some new pens and paper, and who knows - maybe soon, a mandala will "happen". Thank you. Greetings from Quebec, Canada!

      oh please draw! it sounds like you have such wonderful intention behind it and i love that you call the geometry lines "Gods fancy graph paper" ! and for sure @geometryptamine is such an amazing inspiration if I hadnt started watching him and a couple others a few years ago i would 100% not have the career that i have today. any time im down and unmotivated to draw i watch this channel and start doing one of his tutorials then the next thing i know im drawing something completely different. Im so grateful for the channel and i would be so happy to see it motivate you back into drawing as well !

    I’ve been playing around with ideas like this around 60 years, after a lot of stumbling through various spiritual ideas I don’t really place huge importance on geometry as an overarching philosophy but am still as fascinated with it as ever. More interested these days in the mathematics than just the geometry, it’s is there in all the generation and degeneration cycles which is something that interests me more, the whole process of change.
    I have seen quite a lot of these family crests, not just Japanese but Chinese too. Hadn’t realised just how much geometry was used in construction though I did know about mandalas thankas statuary etc. I am not at all interested in the new agey ideas, but like some of what you say about earth as a source of energy, which it undoubtedly is. But why? Well, life of course, so that’s why the cycles of change are so fascinating. We have been disrupting them badly… Thanks for your nice video, seemed very timely it turned up right now as I am revisiting some old ideas I was playing with about cyclical stuff. Don’t get too beguiled by the beauty though, just use it to allow your mind to think freely….

    Good shit. An artist will take their work to that next level when they understand and start learning how geometry works in everything, and another plus to that is when you do understand the geometry of a piece you’re trying to create, it gets a million times easier to put down on paper with precision detail and create.

    This is an amazing art video, and kamon have always fascinated me. It's very interesting to see the this classic design come to life. My MARS degree is in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, and I would offer a word of caution about broad interpretations of mandala and/or any connections with the somewhat nebulous pop-culture concept of "energy." Mandala in Buddhism serve a specific purpose which differs mandala to mandala; the interpretation of meaning or symbolism therein is not necessarily achievable by lay people - there is often a "key", especially in Vajrayana contexts, that a student must receive from a teacher in order to interpret the meaning of the mandala and the way in which is depicts the universe. While sacred, geometry is not syncretistic; there is no common underlying meaning.

    • @wren5291
      @wren5291 Год назад +2

      Not that I like turning towards the negative, and although we know there is a balance to the universe, this has made me wonder, is it possible to cause imbalance or harm by drawing mandalas? As "lay" people without a teacher and a key with which to interpret them, is it detrimental?

    This is my perspective when talking about designs and natural patterns - no one looks at a Ferrari and says "Wow, that's incredibly lucky, that all the right parts came together by accident." It would be an insult to the designers and all the people who put it together.
    Then we find incredible designs, patters and symmetry in nature and we say "Wow, it was really lucky that a cosmic mistake made all of this!"
    Symmetry points to design, design points to a Designer. This makes me think that it's silly to think of something as complex as the earth and all of the life on it coming about by a cosmic mistake.

    • @lindyashford7744
      @lindyashford7744 2 года назад

      Physics, Chemistry and biology are great teachers, just observing them in action is amazing. You do not have to rely on the idea of a single designer. And you do not have to alternatively put things down to a cosmic mistake. Space has a kind of order, nature does too because it exists in space and is subject to the same kind of order. There is also randomness and lack of order too. Not challenging what you believe at all, but opening things up to a variety of interpretations. Crystals grow without being alive for instance, just subjects to natural forces. It is all marvellous and worth observing.

    Really everything in the universe is made with geometry and it’s all energy and sacred. It’s just that some things are more evidently so to us, so it’s like a window into a different way to see the universe. Like we know it’s all numbers and equations but seeing 2+2=4 doesn’t make me *feel* anything lol. However some equations or diagrams or poems might make me feel that vastness.
    Anyway I never thought about how these seals might have been drawn or that they’d need so much protractor-ing lol. Very cool.
