@@giubaca Yes it does do well and good low light but outputs are FireWire (most systems don’t have it anymore but if you have a PC you can add the connection) or it has phono outputs that you could use into a USB video capture device. Both Amazon and eBay sale plenty of USB capture devices.
Since I have been in the business since the days of shoulder bag, separated camera and recorder VHS, I have used every camera format imaginable. My question is what other than nostalgia do you get by having these old SD 4x3 cameras? What use for poor quality video?
That’s like asking someone why they like classic cars! I collect some of the more interesting old units, some of which I wish I own back in the day but was way too expensive. I own a latest 4K professional unit but also have the old pro units like the PD170 and FX1 and FX1000
@@epicchris1985 Absolutely! That’s why I still have 70% of the cameras I’ve owned including JVC X2b (SVHS 3 chip monster) JVC DV500, Sony TRV900, ax2000, PD 170. I traded in a Panasonic Supercam, Panasonic AG455 and an entire Pc controlled high end SVHS edit system at the brink of digital (got way too much for it not too). I wish I could have kept them all.
Hey Chris! Love your videos, really helpful! Does this camera have progressive scan for filming? It has no true prog scan but something similar, which can avoid interlaced stripes in video footage, hasn't it?
Hi it does but I’ve never been a fan of it as it makes the video look blurry in my view. If you look over my PD170 videos I did a video with it turned on briefly at the start of the video. To get rid of lines your better filming it normally then using software to make it progressive in my view. Thanks for your kind words 😊
@@epicchris1985 I am looking to purchase one now but I want to know if it also plays back digital dv tapes that are not high definition? I need a machine that can play back both but also a great camera. Will this one do both?

Hey man!! I just got one of these cameras from my school, it’s the 170 model in the video I don’t have a battery for it and I can’t get the second door open for the cassette. Do you know what battery I should get and how to fix it?
Do you have the power supply? The main door can’t open without power. You are after a NP battery. The large one is a NP-F970 and that lasts hours. Search it online and loads are still made by third parties so mix of prices. EBay is best for them though. The real Sony ones cost a lot still and are old so might as well get a third party one. Hope that helps 😊
@@epicchris1985 hey man I appreciate the quick response!! This helps out a lot, I just got the camera but I’ll order a battery and see how things check out!! You’re the best man 🤘🤘
Hi. That’s not good. I’d open the flip out screen and use a pen or pin to press in the reset button for few seconds then release. Unit will then reboot. If the camera image is still pint you might have a broken censor on your camcorder or ribbon loose inside the unit.
is this the yellow RCA/Phono plug yer? Could just be dirty inside from cable plug going in and out too many times. Best thing I would do is get some isopropyl alcohol and put a bit on a cotton bud and have the camera off and clean inside the plug connection with that and hopefully will will clean up the connection inside.
@@epicchris1985 thank you, will try to clean them but i suspect it could be more than dirt since both audio inputs/outputs and video yellow input/output RCA is not working but cleaning will be a good starting point.
It has ribbon cables that go into the camera and technology they both do the same stuff on both models so yes it could work. You fixing broken unit then?

@@kaiko8021the microphone might require power. The camera can give out what it calls phantom power to power the mic. On the audio switches make sure you flick the switch to give out power to whatever input you’re using. then should work hopefully 🤞
I use a HDV deck that plays normal mini dv too and capture to my iMac in Final Cut. You can also use the camera to iMac or PC using same connection FireWire 👍
Very similar I’d say having own both. The PD170 is XLR microphone only though so does add some weight. Picture wise both about the same in my view. If you want built in mic go for the vx2100
Thanks. I've been eyeing both the cameras because I wanna upgrade from like a handycam (still keeping it though for NIGHTSHOT option and the flash). The PD170 has been quite easily available on Facebook marketplace, I've only seen the vx2100 on ebay and it's a bit pricey. It's hard to find one here in South Africa
Thats the camera I used in high school on my first paid job! I must have one now!
Lovely old unit. Mine I sadly sold on but while I had it I enjoyed it greatly 👍
Thank you, Chris - much appreciated.
what camera were you using to film this video?
Hi. This was filmed on the Panasonic HC-X2000
