Thanks for showing this. I managed to change me rear bearing on my 97 Starlet by following this. All the play has gone and so has the grinding noise. Bearing was only £7 too so a it was a bargain of a fix.
I have a Tercel, but its the same process. Thanks for showing how the crown cap thingy and all that goes together, as well as calling out the size of the nuts.
Great video. Well shot and edited. Watching as a sanity check for doing the same job on my car. Tip; use the old bearing race to tap in the new one. It distributes the impact evenly.
Oh my. I'm sure there would be much better videos out there for learning that stuff. I'm what ya might call a bush mechanic, but good for you for getting in there. I'm sure your dad is proud no matter what.
Your a legend mate. Thanks for putting in the time and effort into making this video. I’m about to change the bearings on my 1998 starlet. I’ll try the oven freezer method and see if that works. Will let you know !
Thanks Bob. That was in springtime. We are fair cooking now though. Mid to high high 30'sC lately. I hope your winter isn't too bad although I hear some places are getting hammered in the top part of the planet.
Thank you mate, great work even without a press. Those races can take a bit of stick as I've done the same method before and as long as you're even with the taps and don't put any gouges in the side, it seems to be ok.
It's better to use the old bearing sleeve to get the new one in by putting it on top and tap it with the hammer. You don't apply grease that way, the best way is to use the indentation technique to make sure the bearing is greased throughly.
Can spmeone pls explain what os making noose, because when i drive i hear a loud RRRRRRRRRRR sound on the front right side and when i brake it sounds like steal on steal touching eachother ... pls pls pls someone give me a tip because i startet hearing it today
As you can probably tell I'm just a bush mechanic. I'm sure there is a torque setting but I do 'em up by feel. Too tight and the bearings bind, too loose and there is play. The split pin is the essential ingredient. Lol !!
Tapered bearings like this only require the nut to be hand tightened. Tightening with a wrench can damage the bearings, I learned that the hard way. Put your nut on hand tight, then spin the wheel for a good 30 seconds or so to seat the bearings, then hand tighten the nut again. I repeat the spin/tighten process a couple times for peace of mind. Always use new dust caps as well.
@@thedivisionbell220 "....put your nut on hand tight then spin the wheel....." JD, you saved me some precious time and money with the above. Bless you!
Okay there's a couple things here that are causing my head to explode, number one when installing the new race use the old race to tap on, do not tap on it with a punch, number two that is absolutely not how you pack grease into a wheel bearing lookup the proper procedure for packing wheel bearing grease
You were almost there when you used the old bearing race to knock the dust seal in.The old races make a perfect matching drift and as they are being chucked doesn't matter if you bash 'em about. Would dearly love to come and show you how its done but I have to paddle my own canoe and its a lot of paddling from Blighty!
No mate I think you have nothing better to do than put caustic comments on old videos. Good for you. My mum always said, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.
@@volgnit I have no idea how to wire an electrical panel but I could probably do a "ok" job with a bit of time and effort. But posting it to youtube may imply it was done professionally and to code. I'm totally fine with this video, BUT put a caption in the first 10 secs: "I am not a professional"

Went for a WOF yesterday and found out the bearing's buggered! Awesome video mate, I'll attempt the same on my 97 Starlet later this afternoon.
I liked how fast you can knock the bearing races in.
Ha ha. The magic of editing. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Dion but remember, I am definitely just a bush mechanic at best. Good luck mate.
Well done Dad been helping my daughter out with all things car this weekend 👍
It's what we do eh Graham. Thanks for watching.

Gee. Don't follow my directions my friend. A bush mechanic is what I am. Lol !
Thanks man, helped med change the bearing on my Old starlet :)
Dad mechanic again, a job that never goes away hahahah
Gotta do it eh Tony. Rough is the only way I know how.
Great video, thanks for sharing that.
Thank you mr, its so helpfull,,,

Rough as guts but the job got done. Lol ! Cheers mate.
I enjoy my starlet. Failed mot... advised to scrap it but I will rather spend a bit on it. Toyota seems to outlast most cars.
Just was wondering how much pressure does the wheel bearing need on it from the nut holding it into place ?

Should do one on a hand break cable 😂
Sadly, she ended up killing the little Starlet and it is now someone else's problem. But thanks for watching.
Bush Mechanic!!!
I'll show ya rough mate. Ha ha ha ha !!
Terrible way to treat a bearing race. You could have used the old bearing to drift it in with no risk of distorting or chivving the new bearing race!
Good idea. You can come and show me on the other side. Lol Thanks for watching anyway mate.
