Read the owners manual. Loudness is to be set fully clockwise which is flat and volume KNOB used to control output. Set bass and treble at 0 flat. If you want lower listening levels lower loudness and increase bass and treble.

On my CR-1000 I can hear it playing outside the house on 2 and above 2/3rds it hurts my ears. It might be speaker sensitivity mine are 89DB which is nothing special but sound awesome. I would have thought the CR800 would be fairly close in volume.

I just bought an cr-820. I am very impressed by the sound. A very clear sound if you have a good source. I am looking now for a cr-1020 from Yamaha. I can tell you I changed my mind about Yamaha, in a good way.

To my ear CR-800 is one of the best sounding receivers of the era and nowadays one of the cheapest to buy although expensive back then. Fm tuner is legendary and the same as in CR-1000.

Hi, I have the same receiver (and a R300) and the loudness control does work differently to any other makers. FLAT is what should be considered normal in that no loudness "contouring" is in effect. FLAT corresponds to a loudness circuit switched off. The reason the knob is oriented the way it is is so it can be used as a volume control and that is tied to the original purpose of the loudness contour - to compensate for the perceived tonal balance of music listened to at low volume.

Hello, I totally agree with your comments. I have the same receiver and wish to use it as a main amp of a small hifi set. What loudspeakers would you suggest to couple with it, due to its lack of power ?

i have the CR 800 & love it. i'm trying to hook up a graphic equalizer and the EQ seems to make no difference. i'm running the Line OUT of the EQ to the Main IN of the amp and the Line IN of the EQ into the Pre OUT of the amp. when i turn the EQ function on & off i hear no change. nor do i hear a change when i adjust the EQ sliders. any suggestions? i also want to run the line out to another amp in another room but dont know where to take an over all out signal from. help!!

Yes, it is a variable loudness control.

I wonder if it is worth the money they are asking for it.
i turned on the receiver and it came on and the lights are working but i was unable to check for sound because i did not have wires to connect some speakers that where available there...Speakers did not have wires.
Any advice will be apreciated vintage stereo

BTW that's a very nice example you have there. I love the look and sound of the old Yamaha's. More understated than Marantz in looks and less "warm" but then their goal was "natural" sound. Cheers

You have a short that is tripping the protection relay

Volume position has nothing to do with output power. Some volume controls are geared to put out more output near the bottom of the scale whereas others allow you to use the entire sweep of the dial. The CR-800 puts out a healthy 45-50 watts/ch.

You should find some efficient speakers. You won't have to use the variable loudness. Also, it could probably use a re-cap. Lastly, don't forget it has pre-out, so. you have options. Just a matter of matching the right amp.

    vintage stereo,
what are your thoughts on the cr 820?
there is one for sale at a second hand store and they want $150 USD.
but it is missing two of the knobs it is rated at 55watts of power.
    Exellent review very informative

I read the Loudness on these are influence feeled output ... can't remind where I read that, but ... I will see when I get mine, the price was good and I don't need to much power, I have my main system for that

Ok, mine arrived today, sounds great with bass&treble on 0 and Loudness on Flat ... and it's LOUD! I run it at the moment at 2 (!) and it fills the whole room with sound.
I use some Polk S20E's bookshelf speaker.

I always liked the 800 vintage of Yamaha and the 820 as well. The 840 and later stuff… not so much.

Excuse me but you have the loudness set fully counter clock-wise which means the loudness is on. That's why the mids sound sucked out. I know it's a little backwards but that is how Yamaha designed it. Loudness turned fully left is on and fully right is off.

I have Yamaha CR-1000, CR-800 and Marantz 2270. All recapped by myself. To my ears and of friends that visit me Yamahas from this series sound better than Marantz, with more clarity and more deep bass. Marantz 2270 sounds kind of woolly with plenty of middle bass that veils the sound overall. But I can see that you are into that woollyness as you turn loudness to the left on Yamaha that does just that, reduces low bass and highs and adds middle bass smearing clarity. Also Yamahas from later series like CR-2020 have less clarity and you seem to enjoy it, so it's all very subjective. You may see my 2 videos with Yamaha CR-1000 and Marantz 2270 playing same track. Both units recapped. Recorded with high quality mic. I would say by using continuous loudness in correctly recapped Yamaha CR-xx00, setting it to say 7-8 you may make it sound similar to Marantz receivers.
