That was such a well acted and moving scene. Freddie's pensive vulnerability emerging in such a characterful way from behind the mask of masculinity, while still chained to a deep, vulnerable narcissism results in a confused, subtly intense and erratic state portrayed so sympathetically and tenderly by Pheonix. All underpinned by this melancholic song by Jo Staffort, belying Freddie's cool exterior and relaying the inner pain and bitter loss he feels. A top movie moment!
i don't think it's narcissism; it's not narcissism freddy is not developed or healthy enough as a human being to even approach narcissism, it's something both beneath that but still more pure than that, and yes, like you said, still vulnerable freddy is like a kid mentally and emotionally; that's the whole point, he doesn't do normal things, and the backdrop of WW2, and preceding WW1, and of course, of course, alcoholism, the whole basis of freddie's character is massive, massive, massive intergenerational trauma (recall the salinas scene when he's talking to the old drunk and he tells that person that the person reminds him of his father)... and of course old-fashioned movie magic or narrative magic of leaving details unfilled, which the actor supplies with their own physical instrument freddie is a force who can't be narcisstic, yes, he is extremely abusive and maybe even evil in his drinking, but i don't think it's narcissism; dodd is narcissistic, not freddie freddy is purer than that, that's my actorly/writerly take, and i think it's largely correct
This song has been one of the two most popular Jo Stafford songs of all time in the Philippines , the other one being " Whispering Hope " , an all-time favorite Christmas song , believe it or not . I used to think that this song was overrated because so many people , most especially lovers , picked this song as their theme song . I wondered what was so special about this song . Listening to it with my heart and after being a lover myself answered my question . Now , I know that this song is as great as love itself. Certainly , one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded !!!
The walk in the desert with that song playing is a very beautiful, poignant cinematographic scene.
It's beauty beyond words and logic. For me that's what makes every Paul Thomas Anderson film.
Also that slow mo shot of Joaquin just walking towards the stairs
