I don't think that it's a choice between Zangief and Mika for future games - you'd have to consider them individually. By that I mean that, say Zangief were to be removed from the franchise, Mika wouldn't be considered the substitute. Someone else would have to be created or brought back to fill that gap in the roster. While both are grapplers and have intertwined stories, I think that they have very different visual appeal and so you'd be missing somebody of Zangief's build to appeal to those who just want to play someone who looks like that (maybe someone like Hugo). Sounds dumb, but some people when they start up pick their character based on appearance and personality and stick with them on the basis of faithfulness (I picked up Ibuki first because I liked her sassiness and have stuck with her even though she's probably the worst character imaginable for my playstyle!)

Street Fighter V's story was a hot mess, but almost every scene with Zangief was absolutely glorious. First the man takes and fully no sells Balrog's strongest punch, then he not only no sells, but _breaks a sword_ using his pure muscle! This is pure theatric anime bs and I am HERE for it.
