    As a french I was realy surprised at what level this cathedral was worldwide so much beloved.
    Yes it's french history, most french people respect it even if not christians. I'm 68 and never realized until that fire how this "old lady" is, far more than only for french people, a great world symbol.

    Hi ! Just to say my view as a frenchman : it was all over the news when Notre Dame burned, and it was indeed emotional. So Macron took the opportunity at hand to promess, without the opinion of any expert, that it would be rebuilt in 5 years.
    So he made everything possible, including bypassing heavy and slow french administration, and pressuring deadlines, to make it happen in 5 years.
    So i just wanna say, from my perspective, this whole entreprise has become a way for Macron to win free political points, at a time when he desperatly needs it. Last week, his government got censured, which had not happen in France since since 1962 ! And in his 10min hollow speech in response to this insane political event, he spent 3min praising himself for Notre-Dame. Anyway, glad that it was saved and is beautiful, but i wanted to put a bit of polical context .

    The letters that look like an 'X' with an overlaid 'P' are the first two letters (Chi and Rho) of the word 'Christ' (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ/Kristos) in Greek. The symbol is called the Chi-Rho (pronounced like the Egyptian capital 'Cairo') and was first used by Roman Emperor Constantine the Great on his military standard/flag in 312 AD. It became a sign of recognition for Christians during periods of persecution. (In pre-Christian times, the Chi-Rho was used to mark important passages in the margins of pages and was also used on some coins of Ptolemy III Euergetes.)

    • @CitronCassis
      @CitronCassis 5 часов назад

      Yes. Also, they said in a French documentary that the previous heating system had really dirty the cathedral. In addition, the vapors from the millions of tourists and the smoke from the candles did not help the situation.
      But let's be honest, the cathedral was very dark and not at all at its potential before the fire. There was an underinvestment in this most visited monument in France. When we compare it to the 🇮🇹 cathedrals of Rome, completely restored and colorful, we were still very far from the mark.
      (people really like cathedrals all clean in Italy, and all dirty and dark in France. I never understood why).
      That said, there were so many tourists, and the French clergy did not want to close the cathedral, it was difficult to do work.
      Another point is that 🇫🇷 cathedrals are always free, and it is always the State that finances the rénovation. It is a significant cost.

    • @CitronCassis
      @CitronCassis 5 часов назад

      We have many cathédrals in France that maybe are higher, more beautiful and stylish, and bold.
      But only one Notre Dame doesn’t need introduction : « Notre Dame » means Notre Dame of Paris . Any other would have to give the name of the city.
      Notre Dame of Paris is one of the first gothic cathédral, the highest of her times. It was the proof that gothic can be really high. (You can still see some Roman bits of architecture because it was the early gothic)
      It is this cathédral that popularised gothic art (=known as the « french art ») in Europe. The long windows and the rosace Windows were innovations in notre dame, and copied everywhere else.
      It is also an icon of art and history : because of the holy relics inside, crowning of Napoléon, the writer Victor Hugo, the architect Violet le Duc, many movies, Disney … and Now the fire and her re-birth.

    the French recognized the independence of the United States in 1778 while in 1776 the Dutch were the first to recognize the American Revolutionary government when the US brig, Andrew Doria fired thirteen guns announcing their arrival. The Andrew Doria was saluted with an eleven gun response from Fort Orange. Morocco formally recognized the United States by signing a treaty of peace and friendship in 1786 and was thus the third to do so. Furthermore; the Dutch provided staggering amounts of gunpowder to the American war effort despite the British embargo and supported the American Revolution morally, financially, and politically.

    Hi Connor, "Mr. Macron: not too left or too right" is the correct definition and that’s why he was originally elected. He's very away from the far right Trump. Trump was invited out of obligation, not pleasure. For me as a Frenchman, Notre-Dame is just a cathedral like many in our country, I saw it once 20 seconds, but it's the most visited tourist attraction of France and fortunately very well restored only with private donations (mostly from USA) and not from our own pocket. All the French people I know do not care about the history of this church and the history of France in general, they are mainly concerned about how they will end the month.

      @tixien День назад

      This restoration was indeed a remarkable achievement. To stay accurate though, Notre Dame was first completed as a fully functional cathedral in the mid 1220’s, 60 years after its construction started. By that time, the roof had already burnt once and had been entirely re-engineered to factor in new technological and structural improvements from Rouen’s cathedral.
      Actually, Notre Dame’s choir had been completed a few decades before, so it took only a couple of decades to get an operational church there.
      The last (north) front tower was completed in 1250 to give the cathedral the overall shape we know today. So in reality it took less than a century to build.
      From 1250 onward only additions and improvements were made (chapels and stuff). The full circle closing of the choir (1345) is usually mentioned as the « official » completion date but, as I just said, it was just another improvement. It’s worth mentioning additions and improvements kept coming in over the next centuries, including the 19th century restoration by Viollet-Le Duc and the 1859 installation of the famous neo-gothic spire.
