  • So I know how to preform a few sword flourishes and thought I might share them with you.
    Spinning or twirling a sword is actually much easier than you might think, why not give it a try.

    I attempted your instructions provided in this video, and it almost caused the apocalypse. At first, I tryed the 'flourish' with a stick for 5 minutes, and it wasn't going too well. I figured that it must be the stick's fault, and decided to use my ancient katana forged from meteorite and folded 12 million times. As you can probably assume, this solved the issue immediately... Until my sword went past 80 MPH. At that point, the vibrations of my ancient magical katana (did I mention it was magical?) reached the frequency required to summon the ancient demons that such swords were often used to slay in ancient anime, I mean Japan. I tried to call my Ninja warrior dad who trained me from birth, but he was out shopping at the grocery store. My only choice was to fend off the demons myself. Using my extensive training gained from thousands of hours of rewatching Starwars: Return of the Jedi, I was able to destroy the demons with ease. After a short prayer to thank Yoda, I sheathed my magical katana and returned to my house to get a piece of pie and a glass of lemonade. After eating the pie (of course I used my ancient forged damascus Nippon steel spoon, why even ask?) I had to come here and write this comment, warning other ancient magical katana users to be cautions when using the flourish method described in the video above. By the way, if you were wondering where I got such a katana, I bought it from ebay.

    I just got into your content the other week, and I love it. Just started trying to twirl blades myself, so I looked up how to do it. Nobody could explain it efficiently enough for a beginner. Then it hits me. Shadiversity probably has a damn good video about how to flourish. And would you look at that, I was right. I've picked up and learned more from you in the first 5 minutes than I did from 3-4 other videos on the topic.
    My problem was that I was getting naturally caught up on my armpit, which the other videos weren't incorporating, or explaining how to avoid. Your method takes that into account, and explains what you need to do in order to avoid it. You're the man.

    Just so you know, an easier way to pull off the basic forward spin is to relax your fingers and hold the grip by simply pinching between your thumb and index finger. That way the spin would flow more smoothly and put less strain on the wrist than it would when keeping the fingers clenched around the grip.
    Check out ShinobiCat's forward spin video where she shows how to do it.

      Mr. AbsentElk WTF? You know you can flourish with two hands, right? In fact, Zweihanders were used spinning 'round the body of the user (using their hands, Sherlock, I can see you coming with more nonesense). By the way, NO sword ever weighed 20 Kg, one of the biggest functional Zweihanders (2'06 meters) only weighed 6'12 Kg.

    Nice job. I prefer not to toss the sword to switch grip though, instead I use a little dexterity and roll it in my hand with the movement, no more stress trying to catch it and or break the rhythm. Plus, with 2 swords, you can still switch to reverse grip with one or both (hard mode) and do a slightly modified movement, even add back spins for even more awesomeness. For fun I also practice flourishes w/ staves and Doublebladed Lightsaber, by doing your typical side to side spin and adding occasional spinning behind the back passes. Lightsaber technique videos have been the most helpful for me in learning these tricks.

    I'd love to see you do a video explaining the historicity of flourishes. I'm curious if they were ever mentioned in any historical texts or taught at least to "show-off" swordsmanship, or are they purely a modern creation for the sake of cinema to look cool.

    • @gwynbleidd1917
      @gwynbleidd1917 3 года назад

      Historicity isn't a real word and sword flourishes were not and are not taught in sword fighting because its fucking useless. It opens you up for attack and shows that you're an amateur who watches too many movies.

    So I've had a go, following this video.
    Biggest issue? Mine are all medieval-style Damascus Steel longswords, broadswords or greatswords. They are heavy as hell.
    I do have a much smaller/lighter rapier-style sword which I can practice with until both my co-ordination and - frankly - wrist strength improves enough for the bigger stuff.
    I also have a Scimitar-style sword, but figured the curved blade would punish any misjudgment of co-ordination by removing one or more of my limbs.
    In any case: Thank you for the video. I shall practice in earnest. :)

    Really good content in this vid.
    One rationale for this practice I heard from "Cossacks". They say that training both hands and of fluid switching of the sword between them was helpful when facing the enemy on the left side of your horse. He thinks he's safe and out of range, but an eye-blink later he's not. Also, it's a training too which develops your writs and basic control of the weapon. Useful for beginners.
    BTW - "Storming the castle" at the end cracked me up. I just imagined how kids would react to this, and I did exactly the same. :-)

    So I guess this question doesn't really apply too much to this video, but i'm fairly curious and would like to know your input (it might relate to this video, but i don't know). If someone is short, lets say below 5 ft 3 in, would it be better if they used a longer sword or shorter sword? I could see how using a short sword would be better because it's lighter and would suite their size better, but then they would doubly stunted in the reach aspect. Then if they used a long sword, they could get more of a reach to compensate for the tiny arms, but it would be heavier, possibly more clumsy, and/or harder to hold. Like in all honesty, an a typical long sword comes up to my shoulders. It's more of a staff than a sword at that point, but if i use a short sword, there is no way i can reach my opponent (which is usually my 6 ft+ friend with tree limbs for arms). As I am knew to the world of swords, I would really appreciate someone's opinion. Please and thank you.

    • @therealr0bert
      @therealr0bert 8 лет назад

      +LovelyChaosIsABeauty IMO lift weights and such until you can handle longer weapons to equalize as much as possible and work on getting up your speed to close distances and get inside or stay on the side. MMA rule one for little guys is never stay directly in front of the bigger guy. It's difficult though, because you'd have to side step while they only have to pivot, but generally if he's got a significant reach advantage you want to avoid and get a strike in, be it with a weapon or whatever, you're going to have to be quick on your feet. A boxer's training regimen may be helpful, jump rope and such, to improve your agility. Remember the sword is just an extension of you so improving you is going to be more effective than improving the sword.

    Hi Shad!
    8:50 LOL XD Very funny ending!
    Very educational vid indeed! :) I didn't know you used to practice martial arts, but it can be told for the way you perform those flourishes! Excellent moves! What did you use to practice?
    I'm a current martial arts practicer, so I understand the concepts you told about mastering moves without guessing what or where are your limbs doing, as showing complex or elaborated moves to the opponent can work as an intimidator.
    Thanks for sharing! I kinda learn from this, 'cause weapons is still a weak matter for me...

    Shad, I'm trying to do flourishing with a foam replica of a Viking sword.
    Now, as you surely know, Viking Swords (beside the weight of a real one, which is in my other home) have that weird pommel that keeps hitting my wrist everytime I try to do the simple spinning.
    Since I noticed in another video that, for spinning a sword, is necessary to loosen the grip and make the sword pivot in the ring formed by the index and thumb, I was wondering if the Viking/Norman sword has some structural limitations to being... "flourished with?" due to its unusual grip/pommel shape.

    As a kid I would learn to sword fight by watching and re watching martial art movies and youtube. (Mostly Japanese) when I was like 4 I started learning sword by taking a stick and learning how it would react with the contortion of my limbs. What movements worked and didn't work, later came movies which helped hone this ideology. But my point is I learned how to do most of the hema and kendo basics from an anatomical and visual aspect at a very very young age. So I spent the time also learning flourishes. I'm. Not extremely proficient in flourishes as that flourished however ( pun) my swordsman skills declined. As I had nobody around to inherently teach the master cuts or the dynamic strategies. This is. Why I'm now delving into hema.

I'm 6 feet tall, could my height be limiting factor? Or am I somehow doing it wrong?

    I would say a flourish holds one advantage in terms of battle. Confusion and deception for those who have no idea it's useless, and at times, hides the length of your blade by a good half an inch if the blade is long enough. So, if your blade is where a person can see the length, you flourish and bring it into a pointed direction to hide the length. (Middle pointed down guard)
