  • Ross visits Kryal Castle - A replica medieval castle located eight kilometres east of Ballarat, Australia, at Leigh Creek, just north of Dunnstown, in the foothills of Mount Warrenheip.
The castle's name derives from the first initial and surname of its builder, Keith Ryall, who had made his fortune selling body armour. Construction began in 1972, and the attraction was opened to the public in 1974.

As someone whose lived in Ballarat for their entire life, I should probably make my way up there sometime.

Unreal! 😂 For reasons unknown, when I was a kid, it was the annual tradition of our little Tasmanian primary school to take it’s Grade 5 students to Victoria for a whirlwind tour of every historical ‘Pissweak World’ in the state. We did them all: Sovereign Hill, Swan Hill and - of course - the mediaeval experience that Australia never had: Kryal Castle. In 1977, nobody saw any problem at all with dragging 30 ten-year-olds around the castle’s very graphic torture chamber (complete with semi-naked shop mannequins having their guts eaten by rats or spreadeagled on a catherine wheel), followed by the genteel entertainment of a public whipping, which in those days involved a naked-to-the-waist ‘wench’ and a bucket of fake blood! I’m amazed that they’re still doing the wench-flogging, but at least she gets to keep her top on in these more enlightened times. 😂😂😂
