    I think, to clarify what the person might have meant, is that cable news specifically is dying, as all major networks outside of Fox news have had audiences shrinking greatly from year to year. I think the idea is that younger people do not necessarily trust these outlets and turn to social media as a result where they feel like the news they’re shown is less curated. A lot of independent journalists also use social media as an outlet for their stories due to not being affiliated with a network to get on tv.

    • @Elora445

      Yeah, in my country, the newspapers are complaining that people don't buy their papers - people are still reading their news, but only online instead. • @NewhamMatt

    I think Jon may have missed a vital part of the picture. What about people who get their news from The Young Turks, The David Pakman Show, Ben Shapiro or Tucker Carlson (now that he's on X formerly known as Twitter)? That takes out the middle man of a television network/program.
    Further, what about those who have their "news" curated by the Facebook, Twitter or RUclips algorithms?

    • @garrusv
      @garrusv 2 месяца назад

      Right. There’s context to the context. The gentleman voiced concern about young people relying solely on social media for information and news. This is very different from the idea of “television”, and while The Daily Show is on said platforms, it’s not even a channel that young(er) people are following for information.

    It's great to have Jon back. We really need his voice speaking truth to power in the current media and political landscape more than ever! That being said, he would face far fewer issues with censorship by media companies employing him if he starts his own podcast instead of a traditional TV show. If you're not aware, Paramount--the company that owns and funds The Daily Show, CBS, Comedy Central, etc--is currently in severe debt, going through restructuring, and up for sale. Their broadcast and cable TV channels are not profitable enough anymore, and their streaming service Paramount+ has been in serious debt since it launched. The future of everything funded and produced by Paramount is up in the air and to be determined by whichever media conglomerate buys them out. Jon Stewart and the Daily Show would have much more control and long-term stability for their content if they start a podcast they control all the rights to!

      Maybe it's just b/c I'm just very aware of what the source medium is even though I'm using a different one.
      I think the point the guy was making was touching on how form follows function but also can filter content delivery and therefore content itself. Wondering if this is a textbook case of a young man hearing others say TV is dying, thinking to himself "yes, it is, because I watch all my stuff online or on my phone," and never once thinking of where the content of what he watches originates? If so, it's just more proof that thinking beyond what we hear is actually what's dying out.

      TV is not dying. It’s simply transforming, just as Jon said. We watch it on a different form factor now. That’s all. We can even interact with it now just as we’re doing in these comments. Traditional network TV might be dying; it’s obvious that it’s searching for new avenues in streaming. The issue there is that the concept of a medium with no way to interact with it is archaic to us now.
      Gen Z (and maybe some younger Millennials) might not know that the name “RUclips” is a reference to television (aka “the tube”).

    He has a point. What's specifically dying is traditional cable TV, where you get a package deal of over a thousand channels and none of them are interested to watch and they come with unskippable commercials that even muting won't save you from its mind-manipulating machinations.
    I'm more worried about not being able to OWN the media in my private collection, be it VHS, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray, even mp3s or video files on my hard drive. Call me old fashioned, but given there's been a lot of shows no longer streaming on certain platforms that people would still pay money to own, be it on a disk or a computer file, it makes piracy a more attractive alternative, even if it does go against one's moral for supporting creative people who MAKE the stuff for us. (Not to mention that closed captions is a must for my family.)

      Like Louis Rossmann (spelling?) says, if you go the legit route what you get is _worse_ than what you get with piracy. I wanted to stream Nflix to my Meta Quest 2 VR headset, and it turns out they cap you at 480p, even though the headset can do 4K or even 8K+. Thus one would literally get higher-resolution video if one were to turn to illegitimate sources. 480p lol. On an 8K device 🤣

      Cable is _very_ much alive.
      It is just that now we call _them_ Streaming Services.
      We went from the perfect Utopia of just Netflix for 8 bucks which had _everything_ but then, of course, greed and capitalism.
      And now we had countless streaming services at 15 bucks with nothing interesting to watch,

    • @robertjenkins6132
      @robertjenkins6132 3 месяца назад

      "(Not to mention that closed captions is a must for my family.)"
