    Pop perfection.

I can't think of another band who wrote so simply, but insightfully, from the perspective of an ordinary young male discovering the deep joy and the deep pain of wanting and being/not being with a girl.

This might be my favorite song on Radio City. The way it transitions from that melancholy first half to the upbeat second half is amazing

I love the Rock critic in the Big Star doc who talks about this song

I wouldn't describe the second half as being upbeat, at all. It's more like observing an object burn up as it enters the Earth's atmosphere. My favourite BS track, by the way....

@@guynorton5353 The second half definitely is not conventionally upbeat lyrically, "I'm thinking christ, nullify my life".

3 minutes and 49 seconds of Power Pop perfection, the true heirs to the Beatles' melodic rock.

My favorite Big Star song upon first hearing it in 1976 or so.

Been loving Big Star for about 40 years now, how mad is that? 3 great albums and every now and then I just have one of those 'Big Star nights' when I want to 'zone in' and play some of their tunes. When I'm in the mood, they just sound like the greatest band ever...

Man..just..this song is AMAZING. But, I’m kinda salty about the line “who is this whore?” being in it. Now, it could be entirely possible that I’m just looking at the lyrics in the wrong way, but still. Like, if it didn’t do that, and if it was something different like “what’s it all for?”, then Daisy Glaze would probably be my favorite Big Star song ever. It’s just so big and swinging and bright and simultaneously raw and haunting and enchantingly gorgeous…and for it to just suddenly become problematic or troubling lyrically..it really bothers me…
Amazing song tho, no fucking doubt. R.I.P. Alex Chilton, the godfather of power pop! ❤

I personally think it works better with the line "Who is this whore"... he is at the bar, he wants to leave, and suddenly his "friends" are introducing him to random women of the night... believe me I am talking from personal experience, and I narrowly escaped each time

Alex had a harsh side. It could be he’s simply painting from life the scene the narrator is in. I interpret the line as a self-portrait: narrator, not necessarily Alex but maybe Alex, is the whore who’ll “soon be begging drags.” Or maybe he’s just scored and wants to get away from the lowlifes around him who will soon be begging drags from the drugs he’s bought. Alex had a lot of hatred. A lot of it was self-hatred. But he took honesty, and not selling out, to a fault. It was his greatest triumph as an artist, and his greatest liability as someone who may have wanted commercial rewards for baring his soul so excruciatingly. But hated himself for wanting. Just my take.

The narrator is sad about a breakup, gets drunk at a rowdy bar, picks up a girl that's not the one he loves, is disgusted with HIMSELF for being cheap and easy, and projects his self-disgust onto the girl he's just picked up...

    I'm driving alone
    Sad about you
    Not going home
    What's to do?
You better not leave me here
    Better not leave me here
    Ooh, I want you here
How can you leave me here?
    I lie in a stream
    And floating fine
    Receiving things
    In my beautiful mind
    Sometimes, oh, sometimes
    Sometimes, oh, sometimes
    Lover, yes I am
Lover, you know I am, ooh
    Now I'm in a bar
That's got to be where they are
Going to dance in the bar
They're going to fight on the floor
    Faster than I can see
    Now I gonna score
    Make for the door
    Who is this whore?
    Soon be beggin' drags
    And I'm thinking "Christ
    Nullify my life"
    Nullify my life, ooh
    You're going to die
    Yes, you're gonna die
    You're gonna die
    You're gonna decease
