- Stroopwafels, Vla, Kibbeling & more!! Trying yummy Dutch food while in the Netherlands.
So my question for you is: Have you ever had any of these foods. What did you think of them? And what are your favorite foods or snacks from the Netherlands? What should I try the next time I'm here?

Thanks for watching!☀️🌸😃 So my question for you is: What other foods should I try the next time I'm in the Netherlands? AND what are you favorite foods to eat while on vacation in general?😊
In general, while on vacation, I try to eat as local as possible, away from touristic spots. There you often get to know the people and the staff helps you often where you can go best and so on.
And do not forget, around New Year's eve: oliebullen! It is a traditional food of the Netherlands around this time of the year. You can get them with or without raisins, traditionally they are eaten with as those represents the sorrows of the past year and you just swallow and eat them away.
You must try Frikandellen and Friet/Patat Speciaal (Pommes Special).
The first one are like meatballs but long.
And the second one are thick fries with curry sauce, mayonaise and white onions.
*Hmmmmmmmm delicius!*
Some suggestions for the next visit: _Kaassoufflé_ (you should grab 'em from a so-called _muur_ ) and _Oliebollen_
Other than that, you pretty much tried all the good stuff. Funny thing to note: most of the famous dutch foods are snacks and sweets.
You need to try their fried foods. Bitterballen, Kipcorn and all the other stuff (as others before me suggested) Also, if you are at the coast, get yourself some Matjes with fresh onions. Best way to eat fresh fish.
“Its a rainy day outside” I’m like: welcome to the Netherlands....
True, the weather is never boring in The Netherlands. And a tip for a visitor who wants to talk out of the blue with a Dutch person: it's also an ideal topic to start a conversation with a total stranger.
Savex yep

Vla and Hagelslag were basically my childhood. I always ate Hagelslag for breakfast :D The netherlands are just a one-hour-drive away, so we can get most of their stuff in our town. Anyone else here who loves Wilhelmina Pepermunt?
same for me. we live in nrw so a shopping trip every once in a while to go grocery shopping in the neatherlands is a must!
Yeeeeeessss I love Wilhelmina Pepermunt!
Yep, although as child we mostly had King.
Kristina Ma where are you originally from??
NRW, Germany :)
Don't forget to try poffertjes! Mini buckwheat pancakes with butter and sugar.
Oh, and the saucijzenbroodje is best when eaten warm ;-)
Yes, I missed the poffertjes too. They are so good just with melted butter and powdered sugar 😍
Awww I love poffertjes! In Germany, I only get them at some christmas markets ... I always head first for the poffertjes when I'm there :D
Yes, poffertjes are great. But since Dana surely grew up with pancakes (the fluffy, thick american style, not the flat ones like Crêpe) and donuts: she might not be so excited about them ..? But nevertheless they are really good
Ernst van Loon can you buy that in the US?
Madelief Girl not sure, but recipes are easy to find. 😉
Most important thing is the heavy cast iron pan, which is not easy to find in the US...
I died when she said "saucizenbrody" 🤣🤣
Nice video I recommend: poffertjes, rijsetevlaai, appelmoes,

Saucijzenbroodjes are best warmed up in the oven. You can eat em cold or warm. I just prefer em warmed up.
Mee eens. Ik hou zowiezo niet van zoetigheid op toast. Pure hagelslag op een bakkerverse witte boterham met veel boter(halvarine). Mmmmm!!
Worstenbroodjes zijn lekkerder
I like them more at room temperature!
The stroopwafels are also nicer warm
Stroopwafels ook
you havent eaten frikandel and bitterballen? disappointing... :D
I believe she did a video like this before when she went to vidcon Europe.
Oh yes! Bitterballen is a must! (Y)
ehmayex k denk da ze 't met opzet ni ging eten, omdat frikandel en bitterballen moeten klaargemaakt worden in een pan.
people generally don't like them though
Aren't frikandellen just cheap chicken saussages ?
I am dutch and the thing what you have too doo is a bitterbal.
Thats smals soo good.
AAAh, the waffles! The ones you had were factory-made and they taste delicious, but you must try one freshly made at a street food truck or a snackbar - they are phenomenal!

Good luck!!
Only when you're drunk.
Aww, you are so bubbly and happy! You made me really happy watching this video ❤️ as being Dutch myself, your reactions on the food were really funny and thank you for tasting our food! What was your favourite out of all these foods you tried? Mine are stroopwafels and chocomel 😊
It's funny how Amerikans people pronounce Dutch words. 😘😅
art for life. as funny as "Amerikans people"??
Or how dutch people try to write American😢😢😢 😂😂😂 don't know if i should cry or laugh🤔
Jenny MOB or how people say American, while the language is called English 😂
Jenny MOB You should be crying because i'm from Netherland and i didn't got english at all and look at me spelling "didn't" correctly 😎😉
g4m1ng4life yes, but dear, the rest is an utter mess. I know English is mandatory in the Netherlands, so why don't you wait a few more years before trying again?

Imagine buying an saucijzenbroodje all the way from across the world and then microwave it. I mean frikandelbroodjes can be eaten cold too.
@@Minyaweth no frikandelbroodje have to be eaten warm same for saucijzenbroodje. just a minute or so in the microwave. otherwise its too dry,.

TOMPOES! GODDELIJK! ;O
I just received a big trade snack box from a friend in the Netherlands, thanks for the heads up on some of this stuff👍
Living now for 5 years in the Unites States and haven’t been back to the Netherlands sinds. You just made me sooo jealous with the kibbeling with garlic sauce🤤😝😄
This is so funny because i eat the ‘chocolate sprinkels’ almost everyday😂
Thijsss stoer :D
Stoer hoor hahaha
Niet gemeen bedoelt
Gaf ze een waardeoordeel aan onze Nederlandse regen? Nee!
Is gwn lekker
Until I was 18 I visited the Netherlands every 3 months. The first time was when I was 4 weeks old. So I think of the Netherlands like my second home country.
And damn, the Dutch know how to make delicious snacks. Kibbeling, Frikandel speciaal, Lekkerbekje, Bamischijf and their amazing cheese. Uuuggghhh, I miss Friesland...
And not to forget Suikerbrood. And Tijgerbrood. And they sell speculaas and burnt almonds all year round.
I don't know much about traditional foods, but when it comes to snack culture the Dutch haave everyone beat!
MelvaCross i agree with you, even tho i'm from the netherlands myself! I live in Friesland hahaha
I live in Friesland
Wow! The chocolate is so chocolatey! And the fish is so fishy! The vanilla pudding tastes like vanilla pudding! Wow, wow, unbelievable! What has she been smoking?
Hi! I'm from the nederlands too and i just loved the reactions i your video!
Ik kom van Nederland de stroopwafel is echt het lekkerst I
( i come from the Netherlands but I think the stroopwafel is the tastiest)
Stroepwaffles lol XD
@@Timosbanos Stoephwaffle 😂
ik kom UIT Nederland. niet van nederland. weet niet waar jij je taal geleerd hebt maar dit klopt niet haha.
You can buy stroopwaffles in some supermarkets in the UK, they are delicious! Best served resting on top of a mug of hot coffee so the steam lets the biscuit and toffee just soften slightly.
Yeah, on top of a mug of tea or coffee they're the best! Generally we eat cookies with the tea or coffee in the Netherlands anyway. And a stroopwafel is the perfect size to fit right over a mug... then the caramel gets all soft and runny... yummm
I loved them crispy when I could still stand the dairy...
but no matter how, they are delicious, especially those with more spices. There are also ones with other types of cookies and sometimes with speculaas. Speculaas is the best
What an awesome idea with the steam. Have to try that!
you can make them warm too :P
Binidj omg yess
You should try Poffertjes
Ja poffetjes!!!
*poffertjes
omg the way you say vla is so funny!!!!
I tried all of them haha i live in holland good video keep up the good work 😁👍🏻
I'm a Dutchiee it's so funny to see this video! Love it😍😍❤
Toast with sprinkles. That's something I will have to try.
lazyperfectionist1 Definitely it's awesome
+ScienecAchieved: What do you mean "can"? Hagel is MUST on Vla. ;)
I just discovered that 2 years ago.. I missed so much
Better to try it on fresh bread with butter. Or let the toast cool first. Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) are at their best when eaten cold: then they are more crispy/crunchy. I always store my pack of hagelslag in the fridge.
We normal eat the sprinkles on bread.
Really fun to watch for us people from the Netherlands . For your next video may i suggest "Griesmeelpudding" you will love it! Keep up the good work!
I live in the netherlands so i ate everything! Nice vid i love it!!!!!
On October 3rd I'll be going to the Netherlands 😍 Although it's a trip that we go on every year at this time, I'm still so excited 😄

WHERE ARE THE FRINKALBROODJES AND DROP ;O
in de winkel, daar hebben ze er zoveel dat ze het verkopen haha
I live in NRW, so not far away from the border to "Holland", and we have a lot of stuff in our common supermarkets. Like Vla and Hagelslag. Its so delicious. Chocomel is a have to do, after a short 1 day trip
19chillstone91 Jetzt bin ich neidisch. Bei uns gibt's keinen Hagelslag
I also live near the border. I go shopping in Eygelshoven often. The Hagelslag is over here too in the same brand as in Holland but they seem to have the dark chocolate 85% cocoa.
Moin. Thanks for putting Holland in quotes, please try to use the Netherlands in the future. As you know, the Dutch provinces bordering NRW are not Holland.
Groet'n oet Twente (on the border with Münsterland)!
I agree. But you can also get Chocomel here. And if you're from NRW area, there are now also some *Albert Heijn* stores (awesome dutch supermarkets) :)
Yeah sure. NRW isn't small. I have to wait since a trip for Chocomel ^^.
Having grown up in the Ruhrpott (Mr German man will know) the Netherlands (and their tasty treats) were pretty close.
Now living in the US, what I miss the most is the choice of "drop".
Next time you're close you need to try "Double Zoute Drop" (double salty black liquorice) - "Zachte Zoete Drop" (soft sweet black liquorice) and some things in between (like "Schoolkrijd).
I have been told however that black liquorice may be an acquired taste - so be prepared... :-)
A good alternative to the crunchyness of the "Hagelslag" is "Vlok" - same chocolate goodness, but they're like woodshavings, just chocolate...
Keep up the good and entertaining work!
PS: My last name is actually "GermanMan" (in German of course) - Tell Stephan I said "Hi"!
Hey neighbore (my English is bad sorry)
Drop???? Are you kidding? That stuff is repulsing. I am Dutch, and find it Drop very offensive, same goes for Mossels. English Drop is even worse.
My fave Tony's chocolonely. I don't know why, but i screamed THATS MY PRETZIL!
In the Netherlands, we have those stroopwafels on a market. They make them there, and they are warm when you buy them! The smell is awesome!
when I was in the netherslands, i ate toast with peanutbutter and Hagelslag.. SOOOO GOOD

Nice video!👍🏼
You must to try the “Frikandel”
Its my favorite snack and I love it😍😍
My parents immigrated to Canada. I grew up eating pb and hagelslag sandwiches to school daily. My favourite vlah is lemon. Stroop wafels and hagelslag can be found in most stores in North America. The sprinkles for cakes are much harder. That reminds me, I will make some lemon vlah for lunch with my parents on Saturday.
Hi Dana, whenever i here your "Dana heeeere" i want to give you a hug :)
You are such a positive person. Please keep your YTs coming. I like to learn about your ideas about Germany but also about the beautiful neighbouring countries in an ever more united Europe ;)
the stroop from stroopwafels is pronounced more like "str-oh-p" XD not the english oo sound
I know right, its hard to explain the oo sound, haha
it sounds like 'strope'
Stroapwahfels
Put them on your cup of tea, so they warm up a little and become more gooey and delicious.
Oe
Great review
Me as a dutchguy really enjoyed the fact that foreign people are coming to the netherlands and starts the vlog with rain :) welcome to holland
I had the Kibbeling, Hagelslag, Vla and the Stroopwafel before, and they were all great :) . Also I think they have the Stroopwafel in stores in Germany too at least where I'm from (Braunschweig). I have seen them in 'Penny' markets.
Hoi Dana! :) You didn't try Kruidnoten/Pepernoten!!!! In the Netherlands people eat them around 6th December and they just started selling them. If you're still here, they started selling them in Jumbo/Albert Heijn BUUUUUUT you'll find the best Kruidnoten in a store called "van Delft". It's my favorite Dutch candy :) Hope you enjoy the Netherlands as much as I do. Greetings from Maastricht :)
Yes. This.
To clarify: Kruidnoten are a seasonal treat that we consider a candy, but Americans would more see like tiny shortbread cookies. The chocolate covered ones are the most popular variation, although I would definitely recommend trying the ordinary ones. The taste of the cookie part itself comes from speculaas spices, also known as speculoos. A taste that is also available in other markets as a spread or Dutch windmill cookies. You can compare the status of it with pumpkin spice, except that it is available year round.
Kruidnoten and Pepernoten are not available year round, though. Sales usually start in September, but there are stores that start in August. It triggers the national debate on "is it too early for this," like other countries have with Christmas stuff in stores. The product itself is linked to the Sinterklaas holiday/festivities on December 5th(Netherlands) and 6th(Belgium), which are celebrated in the Lowlands as our present/gift holiday instead of Christmas. Christmas in turn is our feast meal/eat yourself to dead holiday, like Thanksgiving in the US. After Sinterklaas, Kruidnoten will quickly disappear from stores to make way for Christmas treats. They are my favorite thing to eat. I typically buy a lot of them to keep eating them up until July.
Started selling them in September/november because 5th december is “pakjesavond” it’s that dutch tradition that sinterklaas gives presents to the kids here in the netherlands, before that happend every evening from the day sinterklaas arrives in the netherlands the kids put their shoes for the doors and sing a sinterklaas song, and they get small things in their shoes like chocolate or a small present, but the perpernoten part are like “stooigoed” idk how to pronounce that but basically “black pete” throws pepernoten and other typical candy in the crowd and give a hand full of them tho the kids, it’s very enjoyable tho see the kids happy with it!
Wat leuk. Ik kom ook uit Maastricht 😊
Janman Nique Yes I from the netherlands we eat that when iT is a soort of party named sinterklaas: sinterklaas is the same as the santa and srry for my english 😅
Can't believe VLA isn't made anywhere else! So good, could not do without :)

I hope that you have fun in the Netherlands ! I live in Germany but very close to the dutch border (10 min), I like to go grocery shopping at AH in the Netherlands because they have a lot of stuff that you can not get in Germany, I ate most of the snacks that you ate in your video but my favorite snack that you have not tried yet would be an appelflappen , and as a kid I liked to eat a frikandel
ich komme, glaube ich auch aus deiner Ecke.

You have to put the 'stroopwafels' about 3 minutes on top of a cup of tea, the heat of the steam makes it even more delicious. There is sweet syrup between the layers.
Im from the netherlands!! I like stroopwafel & speculaas
The saucijzenbrooje looks somewhat like sausage rolls. Sausage rolls are basically some sausage mince wrapped in pastry. Very common in Australia, and now I wonder if they were brought here by Dutch immigrants.
Also the toast with sprinkles reminds me a little of a common Aussie children's party food, fairy bread. It's buttered white bread with hundreds and thousands (aka Sprinkles, Nonpareils, Muisjes according to Google - spesifically the sort of sprinkles that are small hard balls of candy) on top.
Mimi Sardinia that's really interesting! Here in the Netherlands you get toast (actually beschuit) with muisjes when you visit a family where a child was born. I think it's a very long-standing tradition, funny that it similarly exists on the other side of the world too :)
It amazes me that sausage rolls and meat pies are a foreign concept to Americans. Also, custard (vla).
Tony Chocellony is not only a very special chocolate bar, but also good for the environment and for the people that cultivate and pick the chocolate beans. Although popular in the Netherlands it originates and is imported from Australia.
Nice video, melting on our different national specialities. Glad you liked it and made this video.
were did you buy your food in the albert hein lidl jumbo or aldi?
I think those waffles are similar to Karamellwaffeln or Honigwaffeln? At least it looks (and sounds) like that :D
Nieskatz' Kind of, but they have different/more spices to them I think. More cinnamon, perhaps cardamom etc
Stroopwavels is basically caramel with cinnamon.
yep exactly the same
Yes found them in shops here in germany:
drive.google.com/file/d/1DsX4rG_SiFqgPV1BIFZDrRORMCwiCAU_mg/view?usp=sharing
I've had the honing waffles and the caramel waffles but they don't taste nearly as good as stroopwafels. Also don't buy the ones they sell in Germany if it doesn't say they're made in the Netherlands because I also tired them and they're not bad but definitely not good either #stroopwafelsnobs
