- Do you remember your first encounter with a ship that sparked your imagination? For me, it was the QE2. 30 years ago, this magnificent liner captured my heart and inspired a lifelong passion for maritime history. This video shares my personal story, featuring never-before-seen VHS footage from my childhood. From a young boy with a camcorder to a maritime author and RUclipsr, the QE2's influence is clear.

The Titanic. I remember watching the movie for the first time and having no idea what an ocean liner was. After that movie I became fascinated with the Titanic and started doing my research and found a great passion for ocean liners and maritime history 😂 and the rest is history
Titanic! Like so many. I missed QE2, but Queen Mary 2 is my favorite place to be, other than my home. I boarded her the first time when I was 50, and it was as special for me as QE2 was for you. I still get that feeling every time we board. I've been on Queen Elizabeth and now Queen Anne, and even though they are nice, they are not QM2.
Titanic after watching Secrets of the Titanic on national geographic. As a child I've been infatuated ever since.
I live in Christchurch, so my homeport is Lyttelton! I remember seeing QE2 in 2007 during her last visit there. Then I got to stay on her in Dubai over a decade later in 2019 😊.
That's amazing! QE2 was truly a special ship.
I wish I had cruised on the QE2! But two years ago the Queen Elizabeth sparked my interest in cruising….
She’s a great ship too!
Thanks for the memories Chris. The ship which started it off for me was the Queen Frederica, Chandris Lines. Formerly the Matsonia and built in 1927, she was 42 years old when I boarded her in Sydney for the long journey via Panama to Southampton. At the time I was in my early twenties, though there were plenty of older people on board as it was hosting a Womens Weekly world cruise. The journey took around 6 weeks, at a rather sedate 18 knots if I recall correctly. Just prior to the Canal we passed the Sitmar liner Fairsea at anchor, she was disabled after an engine room fire and didn't steam again after that. In New York alongside us was berthed the mighty SS United States, I think she was then in her last year of service on her Atlantic crossings. We were somewhat late getting into Southampton, and were walking around the docks at about 4 am. Alongside was the spanking new QE2, ready to leave later that day on her inaugural voyage. If memory serves me correctly, it was 22 April, 1969. Hardly any security around at that time, and in those years, think we could have almost snuck on board for a look around.
Wow, you really got to see a lot of history!
I live in New Zealand and I'm hoping the Queen Mary 2 will come here in the near future I'd love to see it in person
I think she’s back in 2026.
Terrific ship
Lovely story
An amazing ship. My company operated the flower shop on board , the Greenery on 3 deck aft. What an elegant experience that no longer exists
Ohh I remember it well - right next to the Laundrette!
That was great thanks Chris I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. We have our first Cunard cruise next week on QE cruising from Sydney to Singapore. This video provides some important context for what we are about to experience.
I hope you have a fantastic cruise!
A great story and the footage brought back happy memories of my early trips on QE2 in the 1990s. Thankfully, one man (Stephen Payne) thought QE2 wouldn't be the last ocean liner and he was given the chance to prove himself right.
My first experience on a ship was nowhere near as luxurious as yours, Chris. It was on the Himalaya in 1961 and I've loved ships since then. I didn't get the chance to go on a cruise until 2006 on the Superstar Gemini but I always dreamed of cruising on a Cunard ship. When I finally managed to do it in 2016 and I was quite emotional when I boarded QE in Fremantle. Thanks for highlighting the beautiful QE2.
That sounds like a wonderful memory!
One of your best videos, ever. Thank you for sharing......
A great video, Chris. Thank you for sharing your treasury of memories.
Great images. I was on the QE2 in 1970 during a transatlantic voyage. It was practically brand-new. I remember the Queens Room had red carpets at the time. Seeing the inside of the ship again brings back many memories.
That's a wonderful memory from 1995. I was 21 when I experienced the QE2 for the 1st time in the mid 70's
an experience I have never forgotten. I was lucky enough to do 2 more crossings 1994 and finally April 2008.
This first time I met QE2 is when I watched THE SUPERLINERS TWILIGHT of an era. How lucky you were to sail QE2 in your life.
I sailed on the Queen Mary 2 this past year which was my first Cunard Cruise. In 1967 as a child, I witnessed the original Queen Mary sail by our home to its current home in Long Beach.
There needs to be a heart button for this one!
Growing up in Halifax Nova Scotia, I found myself down by the docks every time an ocean liner or cruise ship would drop by Pier 21. As a boy, I remember America, Canberra, Oriana, Rotterdam, Royal Viking trio and of course QE2 which would make 3-4 calls on Halifax per year. I have many pics of her over the years and watched her transformation into the 21st century. I also remember her last visit when she actually came down the harbour close to the bridge and sat there for 40 minutes on a drizzly day blowing her whistle to say goodbye. A poignant last call. In 1990 I had the fortune to sail on her on a 5 day TA from NY to Southampton and was hooked. Loved seeing your video above Chris which brought back many memories. It was my first cruise and I am so glad it was on an ocean liner. These days, I am still hooked on Cunard and have been on the QM2 3 times recently and the new Queen Anne. I am booked this summer on another TA on QM2 and then QV to the Adriatic. Love ocean liners, love Cunard and love the history.
sparked my passion? it was 1965 worlds fair in nyc. the fair was great, but then my grandmother took me to the cunard pier and QE1 was in, next to the big U. we boarded both, but the queen stole my intense interest. over the years i boarded both several times and others while still legal.
Wow that’s a great story!
I lived and worked on the QE2 from 1994 thru 1998. In my home I have a guest bedroom that is decorated with QE2 memorabilia.
Brings back fond memories Chris. Our first ever cruise was on QE2 in 1999 which was our honeymoon cruise. We still do Cunard cruises today and although service is not as good as it used to be on QE2, Cunard is still our preferred cruise line
For me if was both QE2 and Canberra
Two legends!
It was 2005 when I finally did a 12 night cruise on QE2 leaving from Melbourne to the Philippines. It really was a great experience as i have been a liner enthusiast for a long while now. I had wanted to cruise on the QE2 for a long time. Ian Mcnaught was the captain on my cruise also. I had previously cruised on Canberra and the old P and O Sea Princess also, which was also built by John Brown Clydebank. I caught the liner interest when we farewelled a family member on a world cruise from Sydney on P&O Himalaya. Circa 1971-72.
How wonderful
Thank you for sharing the footage of your first voyage on the QE2 in February 1995. I agree it had a mystique about it that we don't really have today. I would have loved to have travelled on that ship. Visiting in Dubai would not be the same. Interestingly the 1985 and 1995 world cruises were both called "The Golden Route".
It is interesting that they were both called the Golden Route, I had forgotten that.
My first QE2 Southampton to New York passage was 1997.
Did an Eastbound crossing to Southampton in June of 1980.
Unfortunately I got way too late into passenger ship sailing or cruising, only started in 2018 with the Costa Victoria from Mauritius, to be on the QE2 while it was in service. Having done 8 cruises now and doing #9 and #10, starting very soon. I do however being based in Dubai have the opportunity to visit the QE2 many times while it is a floating hotel. I do recognize many of the features that you showed on your video. Some still look very similar. Keep up the good work.
How long was the queue for the QE 2
