Maybe not the best, but Will Ferrell has contributed to some of the best skits in SNL history. Roxbury, Spartan Cheerleaders, Short Shorts for USA, Celebrity Jeopardy, Harry Caray, Robert Goulet, the list goes on.
"Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult is a real song. And the first time I played it in Rock Band, I realized there was a WHOLE LOT of cowbell in it.
That is the delicious irony of the whole thing. I listened to this song for decades and never noticed the cowbell until after this skit. I love how they emphasize the cowbell when so many like myself didn't even notice it. This is great.
Actually the official version barely has any. It's there, but just barely noticeable. Still, I love the song and the skit. Even the band was dumbfounded when they found out about the skit being based around it with it being so quiet.
I just ran into Will Ferrell 2 nights ago at a restaurant. My band was eating at restaurant before our show and Will comes in. I went out to my trailer, dug out my cowbell from my drum kit, and Will signed it! Then played my show with signed cowbell from Will.
Were you in Indianapolis? He's filming a documentary(?) driving across the country and was spotted in several places around Indy. He was sitting in a lawn chair and filming in the parking lot of a Walmart on the south side and later was at the Indiana Pacers NBA game.
The absurdity is the point. This sketch did make a mark, however. Shortly after this, when touring, Blue Oyster Cult would xhoose a lucky member of the audience to join them on stage to play cowbell.
During REHEARSAL Will wore a normal sized shirt. For taping, he came out wearing one too short and caught the cast off guard and they laughed in the skit. So Will laughed too.
There is a long lost skit from SNL where a Census taker knocks on the door of a resident. The resident is played by Walken. It is one of Walken's best SNL skits. It used to be on YT but has disappeared now.

Proper use of this would be like "I think this is almost perfect", (response) "It needs more cowbell bro". And if your around 40 or so... you know exactly what this means. 😆
Don't Fear the Reaper is a great song. Per Wikipedia: Released as an edited single (omitting the slow building interlude in the original), the song is Blue Öyster Cult's highest chart success, reaching #7 in Cash Box and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1976. Critical reception was positive and in December 2003 "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" was listed at number 405 on Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 songs of all time.[4]
"The cock of the walk, baby" because its supposed to be 1976 it's his way of saying "Yeah, I'm the G.O.A.T" Great vid reaction and one of my favorite skits 😂
If you watch when Bruce Dickinson goes back into the sound booth if you pay close attention you see him laughing his butt off. Then being dead serious when leaving the booth. Lol
The fact that you're reviewing this seriously as a musical peice instead of a skit (unintentional? I can't tell) is even more hilarious than the comedy on display. You considered more cowbell as legitimate feedback & I fell off my chair. Thank you.
I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell 😂😂😂 is literally my childhood. We would say it all the time to each other in our best Walkin impression.
When Queens of the Stone Age played SNL in 05, Will came out in this outfit and danced around the stage playing the cowbell while QOTSA played. I remember watching it live on TV as a QOTSA fan, and long time SNL fan, and went crazy lol If anyone hasn't seen it check it out. They played the song "Little Sister".
Mr Lloyd, this is SNL and this is a skit ... This song is one of Blue Oyster Cults greatest and is as a matter of fact their biggest hit and the person playing Cow Bell is the SNL player and Actor known as "Will Ferrell" and this is one of SNL's greatest skits of all time.

Christopher Walken is just so good. My favorite SNL sketch with him in it is the Googly Eyes Gardener. It's so funny, and it's entirely due to Christopher Walken's one-of-a-kind delivery.
The skit is fun. The song... is called a classic for a reason and it's not that it is almost 50 years old. this song always brings me to the same emotional place.
One of the shows that randy Bachman did was about songs featuring the cow bell. The first selection was this sketch with the actual song seamlessly joined with the sketch.
This became a bit at Dallas Mavericks games after Sacramento brought cowbell to a playoff game to distract players during free throws. Cuban put together a whole theme where Walken would just pop up at games and ask for the prescription of more cowbell.
Bruce Dickinson didn’t produce this song. He did however work on the production when it was released on a best of compilation CD years later. And yes, it’s THAT Bruce Dickinson, lead singer for Iron Maiden. The SNL folks looked at the reissue info, not the original release info.
🤗This defined a generation of people randomly shouting "MORE COWBELL!!!!!" every time we hear one, 🤭no MATTER where we are! 😝 I'm 58 and still shout it at shows! 😁🐰
Blue Oyster Cult is a real band from Long Island. They were moderately successful with this song being their biggest hit. The people on stage are not the group. They are SNL cast members. When they were preparing for a tour, they would often play at local Long Island clubs as "Soft White Underbelly." So they wouldn't draw big crowds. But everyone knew their alter name so that became ore of a joke than good in practice. The lead singer Eric Bloom is Howard Sterns cousin. He is also from Long Island. Christopher Walkin played the record producer. He is infamously known for being on the boat with Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood when she mysteriously drowned after a night of drinking.
Yes, it's a real, well known song from the Seventies, and, yes, it includes a cowbell. It's the absurdity of creating a whole sketch around that cowbell that kind of underpins this.
I love your drive to problem solve! 😂 I think what makes it funny for me is that I knew the song well before seeing the skit and cowbell is *really* prominent.
I can't believe you haven't heard of the "More Cowbell" meme, but of course it had its heyday before even the Internet was commercial, let alone the Web.

They did a great job recreating the look of each Blue Öyster Cult band member at the time, but their positions and names are changed. The guy in front really looks like lead guitarist Buck Dharma but is called by the name "Eric". Eric Bloom is the lead singer of the group and Will Ferrell, with the hair, the beard and the sunglasses looks very much like the real Eric Bloom. The drummer looks just like BÖC keyboardist Allen Lanier, but is called "Bobby", perhaps because at the time this sketch was made BÖC's drummer was Bobby Rondinelli. The one in the printed shirt with the black guitar should be on drums because he looks just like drummer Albert Bouchard. Finally, the one in the leather jacket looks, I think, the least like the person he's portraying, the brother of Albert Bouchard, bass guitarist Joe Bouchard. And I don't know, but I have heard that Christopher Walken, who is called Bruce Dickinson, is actually doing an impression of Blue Öyster Cult's original manager, Sandy Pearlman. Aside from all that, this is a great sketch. I love it that Jimmy Fallon can't even LOOK at Will Farrell without breaking character. He's trying not to laugh so hard he's constantly hiding his face.
