Here in Atlanta we desperately need a tunnel like this under the East side of Atlanta that would connect GA-400 with I-675 at I-285 forming an underground interchange with the Stone Mtn Freeway and John Lewis Freedom Pkwy into Downtown Atlanta. This would alleviate the continued congestion on the Downtown Connector (I-75/85).
I love this video so much. This saves me time to entry and exit from the new M8. I was planning a round trip at one quiet night to know the way, which you did. Thank you thank you and thank you.
This tunnel is amazing. Hopefully after this covid when I can actually see my cousins, I can drive through this tunnel. Well my mother at least. ITS SOOO COOL! Now you have to be there when the other tunnels open up to get to the M1 to get to Newcastle and Brisbane.
Mate, I have not drove this tunnel before, again you get the privilege to be able to drive them on the opening night, must be a great feeling! Excellent job. big like 178
Great video! And thanks for the descriptions as we passed points of interests. This was a gas! Loved how you floored it, albeit digitally! Tastefully done and even the disco music was well matched! Great job! Can’t wait to visit my hometown to drive this tunnel! From California.
I was also there to witness the opening. I came on my bicycle and shot some footage on my iPhone, which I uploaded to my channel. At around 2:20 on that video, I turn my camera around to see a man with a camera on a tripod, to which I remark "I wonder what RUclips channel he runs?" I'm willing to bet it was this channel.
Just travelled ( at about 5pm) on the west bound carriageway from Gardeners Rd, exiting at KGR, Beverly Hills. What an amazing tunnel !! So well lit, wide lanes with smooth pavement and generally quite level throughout its entire length. It was such a pleasure to use and so relaxing, partly because there was only a small amount of traffic using it !! What a difference compared to that horrible, always congested, narrow, polluted original M5 tunnel, which was (infamously!) clogged from the first day of its opening in December, 2001, due to the stupid decision by the then Labor state government to build it with only 2 lanes in each direction!! This went against advice contained in the EIS( Environmental Impact Statement ), which advocated for 3 lanes in each direction, with a modest toll to cater for the extra construction costs.
The M5 East is so depressing in comparison to the M8 that's for bloody sure! The M5 East was actually built to be a toll road, I guess back in 2001 two lanes was modest. It ended up being free and being the shithole it was.
@@DrivesDownUnder dont know about you but I travelled m5 m5 east every morning and at 04 30 never a problem. @@DrivesDownUnder good on you m8. From next week when I'm back at work I'll go the m5 to K G Rd and get off. Even tho I'll leave 15 mins earlier Afternoons will be a different story tho
Eastbound is absolutely awesome. The westbound tho is gonna have a massive issue around King George’s Rd where it goes from 4 to 3 lanes. See what happens
What's the point when it's only a 2 lane tunnel. All it takes is a truck unable to accelerate upwards to cause a bottleneck congestion at the other side
I will probably use the tunnel once just to try it out but I can see my self using it on a regular basis. Pity all the heavy vehicle's being forced to use the north Conex.
Sucks for me. Now I have to drive an extra 15-20 mins to work on top of my 1 hour drive to and from home due to this charging me so bloody much. Not happy JAN!
The only issue i have with this new tunnel is there are absolutely no exits. Meaning once your in your only exit would be St peters which kind of sucks ~_~
@@mryan89 imagine now paying a toll on a road that has been free and has been paid for many times over. transurban know how to fuck politicians and tax payers good and proper. I trust Transurbans boss sleeps well at night on his $7m pa salary
you should try driving into the tunnel now. There is a section of the tunnel where it is rusting like hell due to water leaking into the tunnel. It just ruins the drive
@Paul Mitchell I know! Absurd. It's been there for 20 plus years and now they toll it? And they reckon they aren't raising revenue. Unfortunately our government have sold all these roads off to privately owned operators like transurban and Macquarie Bank who make a fortune in returns from them, by setting insanely high tolls.
Interstate 90 and 94 should be tunneled in Chicago with tolls in a manner similar to the M8, and Interstate 278 in New York between the Verrazano and Kosciusko bridges should be reconstructed into a toll tunnel as well, and become part of an extended Interstate 87 from the RFK bridge to where 278 meets Interstate 95 in New Jersey. This would be one of the main criteria necessary for a connection between the two existing and planned sections of the highway, with the expansion of the DE 1 freeway to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel being the second component. South of the bridge tunnel a tolled tunnel would be built to connect the bridge tunnel to Interstate 64 where it would be concurrent with it to its eastern terminus at Interstate 664. From there Interstate 87 would continue along its planned route to Raleigh.
More infrastructure our taxes on petrol (opps Excise) should of paid for... A government hand out to the private sector who in turn subcontracted the build to charge and keep profits forever and ever.. Like the Cross city tunnel, an agreement with the NSW government is the state would pay for the short fall of tolls off if the projected numbers weren't met..... or how about the Lane cove tunnel going east bound when public lanes were seized to use as an entrance to the tunnel? Public opinion sorted that out... We are being drilled , fisted and ripped off.... Why do we still pay for the Harbour bridge??? What , to play for a Tunnel, that pays for what? A entry to what is a privately run toll road? And theM4 Debacle....... So what is it paying for again? Private corps just to get things built , but also to let them keep and reap? Hmmm, Rape? Some Perspective......When I was in Switzerland , a flat 30 euro fee to use all infrastructure..... The Gotthard Tunnel , all 17km of it accessed, among the many others, All for 30 euro a MONTH.,
Its just a load of crap because my dad drives on the M5 and there is something he always complains about that a once untolled road is now tolled and we blaim the government and transurban for taking our money
I don’t understand what is the purpose of this overpriced tunnel to connect to hippy towns. I don’t see it will reduce any congestion on m5 tunnel if you’re going to charge toll.

Great video, very detailed and informative, despite that we don't share the same taste of music.
That is quite a tunnel, so well lit and beautiful.
I like how the toll shape changes on the M5 in your clockwise and anti-clockwise videos.

Victoria has a M8 too. And it's national as well same as the Hume

This is some Tokyo themed stuff on the motorway and tunnel!
Lol it looks like an actual racing game

How much does it cost each way? Why is there a toll on the M5 tunnel from GKR?
Both the new M8 tunnel and existing M5 East tunnel now incur a $6.95 toll.

News sources have been referring to it as being 9 kilometres long. I'm not to sure about the *exact* length though.

What’s going to happen to the A8 is it’s number going to be changed?
I believe the M8 will eventually link to the A8 via the M4-M8 link, Western Harbour Tunnel, then Beaches Link motorway.
