You and me both, mate. For nine years (1984 - 1993) I did the Canberra to Sydney run (first Bankstown and then in my final years to Mascot) on a regular basis. The Sydney end has certainly changed in a big way. Glad I'm not doing it now!

I wouldn't come to the far North In Canada if you think 8 hours is long! Calgary to Vancouver is over 12.5 hours. Vancouver to Toronto is nearly 40 hours and majority of that is in the US as Canadian roads suck. Only 40% of Canadian roads are paved, the rest is gravel.
I live in Sydney and visiting Melbourne is my favourite thing to do. Even if I get the chance to leave at midnight for driving to Melbourne I would do it. I have done it.

Such a good road. I feel like the speed limit really needs to be increased to 130km/h on sunny days like this. Road is so boring at 110. I don't think it will happen though unfortunately as the cops are ruthless with speeding along there, especially near Goulburn.

@Tanya Spotting Nanny state victoria has zero tolerance for speeding. It's widely accepted that NSW gives you 10 percent. You can (and often will) be booked in Victoria for just 2km/h over the limit. It's revenue raising but what can you do?

Ah, I recognise that acoustic shield on the left at 1:46:30 because it borders a friend's property which I visit every week by walking underneath the freeway at that point. The property's called Garoorigang which still belongs to a descendant of explorer Hamilton Hume of "Hume & Hovell" fame after whom the highway, now the freeway, is named. Yet all we really see of Goulburn here is the signs because the whole town's off to the right. It's more interesting than I thought, though, simply watching your dashcam view. Quite relaxing actually!

I love the positivity here. I love long drives but dread the once or twice yearly drive home to Melbourne from Sydney as I find it so laborious. But it’s nice seeing others so excited by it and maybe I should rethink it!

The operating hours are rubbish there, particularly if you want to get to Melbourne or Sydney the same day.
What a long, strange trip it's been. Thanks to Roaming N Watching for the work you do, video graphing and editing, especially for this long trip. Victoria seemed to have more vegetation along her highways, so it makes sense that they have more wire fencing. I appreciated the transition to nighttime driving. It was interesting to approach Melbourne from the north to see all the changes that have occurred.
When I got to the US, the federally-imposed highway speed limit everywhere was 55 mph (88 kph) because of the fuel shortage. Talk about a sucky speed limit. Currently, here in Nevada (and in Utah) the max speed limit is 80 mph (128 kph), which usually gets driven at 85 (137). Believe me, this is plenty fast when you take into account driver fatigue over long distances, amongst other things. I was glad to see the 110 kph limit on the Hume Highway. Basically, driving is pretty much the same all over.
And road trips are a lot of fun. I was surprised how much enjoyment I got out of this virtual trip, even though I wasn't driving.
BTW, have you driven The Great Alpine Road? What car do you drive? What camera equipment do you use? Do you use an app to review a coordinated view of video vs GPS location?

I reckon we could be allowed to drive a bit faster than 110 kph on freeway here in Australia, especially in regional area.
I've driven The Great Alpine Road with my SUV, back then I didn't start to make videos as one of my hobbies. I'm planning a trip over there with my GoPro 9 and Sony A7 IV in the near future.
It is really enjoyable 8 hour journey.i just feel as drove.
But now i am in Colombo 5.thanks for your coverage.

@@roamingNwatching Thanks. I've done it in the UK (I got more than my share of horns, because I take it slow). I always repeat LARD (Left Alive, Right Die). My biggest issue is parking believe it or not. My programmed spatial cues are really different.
Well driven my friend. The highway was reasonably quiet. I’ve driven the whole length two or three times and I drive the Goulburn to Wangaratta section a couple of times a year on way to the NSW south coast. I know it very well but it looks quite different through the lens so often hard to pick where you are because of the limited vision and not being able to read the road signs despite it being 4K video. And the hills get flattened out. But well done.

Hi did you encounter a lot of roos or other nocturnal animals during twilight driving? Many times, I am too afraid to ride my motorcycle home at night simply for the reason of possibly hitting animals so have to choose to stay in motel for extra night
Never hit an animal by driving 😄except insects 😢
I think it because of the main highway that there is enough traffic noise the kangaroos tend to keep away from region. If get off the main highway with less traffic noise it certainly more dangerous around twilight time to drive on roads as could easily come across kangaroos. Also at some parts of highway there can be a lot of barriers that make it hard for kangaroos to get where the cars are. I tend to not drive at night but I drove from Sydney to Melbourne a few months back and was not really an issue at night to be approaching Melbourne after dark with similar traffic amount as here. Many years back the I drove at night plenty of times but one time made the mistake of trying to drive an hour or two extra late at night. I think it was somewhere northern New South Wales on way to Queensland I drove out of one town and about 100 kilometres before next town and the road was very straight and did not see much traffic all the way, which I understood why later on when I just kept coming across so many kangaroos on the highway, you had to drive so slow it made the initial decision to drive an extra hour before sleep pointless because I was not making much progress. Thankfully never actually hit a kangaroo but literally saw hundreds for about an hour or more and many times there was a big group of them on the highway all at once that needed to drive around 5 km/h an hour just to navigate around them. As a result any time, I do long trips now I barely keep driving after the sun going down. The only places I willing to do it is on a highway like this approaching Melbourne where there so many other vehicles, the noise must keep kangaroos well away.
If you came via Yea or Yarra Glen there no chance I would drive at night.

it is not wide with many lanes like USA, it is a narrow highway, looks like a main road in an area of any city. Are these what aussie highways look like????

Once you get outside the metro areas of Australian cities it becomes like this.country hwys . Really dangerous for driving high speed with all the trucks and wildlife
Australian roads are some of the most narrow in the world. I don't know why the government let lobby groups convince them to copy the Americans and let motorbikes lane split. I never seen a bike "lane filter" legally, even the police make mistakes. Most motorbikes use lane splitting as an excuse for reckless illegal negligent driving.
Australia at it's best at 110kms an hour. Stopping to look at the scenery, what dah was that?

Cameras and cops, they are surely somewhere along the way. I usually don’t care where they are cause I always drive with traffic rules in mind 😂

An iPhone 13 Pro Max with special mount which can be installed inside of the vehicle has been used for this video. With the special mount you can charge your phone and connect to a external mic at the same time

1. I am new driver on my red Ps. I was wondering is it a beginner friendly road? by that I mean - will I be expecting lots of hard lane changes? or is it pretty much staying on the left and just going for a long time?
2. I was planning on taking a 1 night break in some hotel in the middle. Which area should be good for that?

***** Guysss I completed this on my red P. I stopped at Alburry for the night. I shared the drive with my partner ( sorry I should have mentioned I am driving with someone). My experience as new driver on red P was it increased my overall confidence tenfolds. From my house at Parramatta I drove 4 hours straight without any issue ( my car is nissan x trail which is very comfortable) . Then my partner drove to albury. Next morning I drove till Melbourne city then my partner drove inside the city. I also drove from geelong to great ocean road. This drive made me extremely confident and comfortable with the overall driving experience 😍😍😍😍.
Assuming Sydney to Melbourne:
1. Once you are on M31, not many lane changes. But watch out as the left lane sometimes might become an exit lane and you have to move to the right lane
2. Albury
3. Your speed will be limited to 90 km/h for red P.
Learn how to merge into M31 as this is the most difficult part for new drivers; it requires matching the speed of cars on left lane of M31, indicating right, finding a gap and then merge.
Be careful when there are exits off M31 as someone might cut you off in order to exit off M31.
Follow the 3 second following rule.
Do not drive at night or twilight hours.
Use these features if your car has these (they might have different terms): adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane centering assist.
Finally, I don't recommend such a long drive if you are new; try Sydney to Canberra first.

It is empty between major cities in Canada too but not that empty ,you must be prepared before a road trip like this in Australia
NOT that bad :) There are actually a few gas stations with toilets and restaurants along the highway.
All of the town's on the route have had bypasses built around them now. They're just a short distance off the highway.

Set the cruise control to 110 sit back and enjoy the trip and you're laughing
