Thank you! And I quote you, "Shooting concepts will raise your level as a photographer!" Awesome!
😅Thank you!
My wife and I have been shooting stock for quite a while. We've been looking for ways to expand our portfolio. Your comments on editorial content opened our eyes to a new area of portfolio development. Thanks for a very informative video.
Awesome! So glad to hear that. And best of luck! I’ve had a lot of fun with stock, it’s a great way of creating memories, and capture your life! Happy shooting

I never thought about concepts. You're right you do have to set things up thereby making you a better photographer. Getting better is what I need to be. Thanks for this.

This video raises my passion to keep stocking! warm greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Awesome! Thank you! And hello from Idaho/USA
Thank you for taking the time. I had not thought about the white backround, I usually avoided that.
Great tips. Take care.
White backgrounds can be tricky, I showed some in a video about isolating drinks on a white background, the good thing is that it gives editors a lot of flexibility about how to use them, they are not the most exiting picture, but they are the pictures that used the most!!
This is the most informative channel on a topic I have only become interested in. I live in what is probably the most cultured city in the world and have great access to scenes that are desired by clothing designers and event promotion companies plus shoot hundreds of stage and film actors for their portfolios but such work is slowing down so the idea of stock is interesting to me. Back in the day when I had a large popular recording studio in California I always had my film camera close by in one of the control rooms so would snap monochrome shots of relaxing times for the artists or when in serious discussions with the producer during a brake and many of those ended up on album covers or liner notes. Labels paid based on sales, since it came out of the artists share, if it did not sell well the label was not out anything. So when an album sold 3-6 million copies, royalties were quite impressive, more than what I earned actually recording the album. My studio produced 197 gold and platinum albums in rock and R&B so those casual snapshots paid for several homes and provided the seed money for a dozen other related businesses. I moved from the US in 2000 after giving everything away back in California and have been living in a great place for photography, as a major tourist destination and cultural center, St Petersburg Russia and opened 3 small businesses, one being a photo studio with primary customer base are actors, opera singers and ballet dancers. A few years ago there was a protest march and I took photos of it and posted them on web site and the next day a few of the images were on all the major news networks broadcast or their web sites in Europe, US and Australia. I did not mind the free use of my photos but what pissed me off was how every one of them badly distorted the issue and flat out lied making the protest into a riot against the government when it was preservationist who wanted to prevent the big federal gas company from building the tallest building in Europe within view sight of the historic city center which is a UNESCO World Heritage site as the most preserved original large city center. The protest worked, the gas company has already spent $100,000,000 in site work, government owned, was told by popular demand to locate it somewhere else. They did and created a whole new very modern part of the city 10 miles away which has become its own community of higher end hotels, shopping and recreation destination, a win-win result.
I have not posted any to any stock sites or agencies, but it might be a good time to seriously consider it. I have access after hours to all the grand museums, palaces and estates for tourism promotion images but the concept images you displayed sparks interest in me.
One question, if models are used, does a release be needed if it is an unidentified part of a person such as a hand modeling a bracelet or ring ? Also, if a model is used, what sort of compensation do you use, say, share in royalties, or simply rights to use the images herself.
Thank you that’s a great story!
It sounds like most of your work will be editorial content which is great! Is the model is not identifiable you don’t need a release, but if the piece of jewelry is you will need a release from the designer/maker. As far as model compensation that is up to you, the agencies don’t keep track of that (one exception, I’ll get back to that soon) I’ve only used friends as models and let them use the images as they wish except for anything commercial as I own the rights to the images, all have been happy to end up on magazines and billboards. Most stock photographers just pay the models for the day, and have them sign the model release. The price is whatever you and the model agree on.
One video agency Black Box Global, allows for the share of royalties, but this is only for video sales and not photographs.
If you own the rights to the old photos you could be sitting on a ton of potential sales, even without a release it would be great editorial content.
I do have to tell you stock is slow going, it takes a few months or years to set up a large portafolio and images don’t always sell right away. It’s great, but it’s not easy!
Hope this helps!
You have genius ideas on stock photos, thanks, and quick delivery, appreciate that.
Thank you! I enjoy coming up with different ways to photograph a concept or a word. It makes me think indifferent ways.
Thank you, so informative and exciting! will watch your other stuff!

These tips are just as valuable for stock videographers as well ❤ thanks for sharing! - Amy
Yes! Stock photo and video go hand on hand!
Remarkable results wow and great advice well done very useful thank you. Regarding licenses I think I am right in saying that generally they are either Royalty Free (RF) or Rights Managed RM) and editorial pics can be sold as either of these two types. Shutter Stock sell as RF only but sites like Alamy sell RF & RM.
Thank you! you are correct, Shutterstock use to offer more option including RM but I haven't seen that option for a few months, Alamy, Dreamstime, and Deposit Photos offer more licensing options and Adobe does not do Editorial images unless they are Illustrative editorial.
But as with any other industry, things can change quickly!
Thank you for sharing this detailed and valued video.
Im glad you feel that way!
Stock Photography has helped me in many ways for multiple years! I hope It can do the same for you and others!

Hi!! Thanks for the video! It's the same sell one by one stock seller and sell by wirestocker (that's sells to all this others..)
Thank you!
And yes, the problem with wirestock is that they changed and now they want you to pay to upload to other agencies, I don’t reccomend them anymore.
Wow thanks for the tips great video
I'm glad you found it helpful! thanks for the comment! 🙏
Unfortunately I am an illustrator so not sure I can do editorial, if so, how? anyways thank you for sharing, that video is pure gold!
Thank you!
as far as editorial photography they have to be 100% as it happened, im not even supposed to remove blemishes from peoples faces or stage any part of it, an illustration would be a bit tricky 🤔, why would the illustration not just be RF? are you suing recognizable buildings or people to create these designs?
Great stuff! I am curious, did the bear require a model release?
Thanks! The bear did not, I Did however upload a few as editorials with his proper name and info but not all of the images
Great video, dude! Thank you!
Glad you feel that way, thanks for the comment

You're welcome 😊
Thank you for sharing wonderful ideas 😊
Of course! thanks for watching!
I love your enthusiasm and love your portfolio which has great images in it. You've been a long-term contributor to stock agencies and I think you were able to generate so much income in the past because the stock agencies were comparatively generous in rewarding their contributors. The return per image at SS now is normally 10c, exceptions apart. Adobe Stock is comparatively better offering roughly 35c per image. Moreover, with the pandemic, the stock photos market is beginning to get saturated. It seems to me that there is greater scope in generating some income through videos than with stills. What do you think?
Absolutely, Stock video pays much better. and yes you are correct, my income has been cut in half, I also haven't been as active as I should, regardless, I still receive over $750 a month from stock photos , some months much more. The main benefit for shooting stock is learning, it teches you how to be a well rounded photographer, product, portraits, landscapes, concepts etc, then you can apply all of that to a commercial photography business and still receive residual from your Stock Agencies,
Video is a bit more complicated, but it does pay much better, starting with pictures will get you a good idea for composition, subject matter etc and make your videos more sellable.
@@wollertz It's great to hear that your images continue to bring good revenue. That's very encouraging. BTW, I was very surprised that you managed to photograph close-ups of maps and SS accepted them. Maps are regarded as intellectual properties. My map images were rejected in the past. They also don't accept any images that have graffiti in them.
@@lspeventmedia7836 SS did reject some maps, I found that using a very shallow DOF and avoiding a lot of information on the map it self helped get them accepted. most of the images were at about 45 degrees instead of flat, not sure if that was the defining factor, just like with real cash, they don't want anything that's flat and clear 🤷♂
thanks
Thanks for a lot of information..

Stellar advice and vid, could you recommend what format and pixel size to upload and is it better to create collections or just keep them individual?
Thank you!
I upload everything at 100% 300dpi, and I do individuals, I do have a few collections in shutterstock, but that’s just so I can keep track of sales and stats
@@wollertz thank you 🙏 also if I may ask one more thing. Do you recommend uploading png or jpeg?
@@juura680 jpg, adobe stock just started accepting pngs with transparent backgrounds last month, so there’s a big opportunity!
Very valuable information and thank you for sharing. I've heard different views from photographers about protecting their work. From your experience, do you feel it is necessary to place a logo, watermark or even copyright one's images?
Stock sites won't take an image with a logo or watermark, there are options to keep you're images safe and even agencies that will fight for you and split any settlement. logos, watermarks are al very easily removed with todays software so no, I don't worry about it any more, things are changing and more companies are protecting creators and their art!
Thanks for responding, I appreciate the info!
Sir I like your videos. It motivates me.. Do you shot in raw? And edit to LR?
Thanks so much, and Yes I always shoot Raw and Edit using LightRoom Classic
@@wollertz thank for info sir. What lens do you used? Why your images are so sharp?
@@Brypadlan_films_photography They have to be sharp for stock, I have many lenses. my favorite is the 70-200
@@wollertz ohh.. 28-300 here.. I am not done yet watching all your vids sir. Make me inspired..
Great contents, thanks for the information and I've just subscribed to your channel.
Quick question.....as I'm starting out and on a budget, what camera could I use to get some great high quality pictures. Also could I use an IPhone?
Thankx
Thank you!
as far as starting out, it a tough question to answer, stock photography is a commitment, you probably won't see more than $15 the first year, but you also have to invest in good gear, remember you are competing with people who have been doing this for 15 or 20 years, so yes your hear is important. I started with a canon rebel t1i ($500) I didn't start seeing sales until I bought the 50mm 1.4 lens ($350) then I started learning more and shooting more, about a year later I bout a Canon 7D ($1800) and that's when I started grow faster. You can buy a good used camera for a good price or a new start up mirrorless for around $1000 and go from there.
as far as phone photos yes, absolutely agencies like shuttertstock, Alamy, I believe deposiphotos and a few more have mobile apps where you can take images form your phone, and do the whole process form the mobile app. remember to use the phone to its highest potential, bright light, avoid dark images, try not to oversaturate the images or over sharpen, you might want to get an app like snapped to edit your mobile images.
I hope this helps, Its probably not what you wanted to hear, but it does take $$ to make $$$, and we live in a world with a lot of competition, with forces us to become better at our craft.
@@wollertz Thank you so much for the information and continued success.
@@bsims4993 I’m thinking I might make a video on what gear you might need to succeed in stock photography…🤔thank you!
@@wollertz That would be awesome and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed this video. I still don't fully understand the difference between editorial and royalty free images. Could you explain a bit more for me please? Also, you mentioned model release...when is it necessary?
Thank you!
Royalty free images are used for marketing and advertising, editorials are used in news, magazines anything that captures a time and a place.
Royalty Free Images: If you can recognize the person you need a model release even If the photographer is the model (self portrait) If the image has a logo you must remove it (clothing shoes etc)
Ig you shoot an event with lots of people it would be imposible to gather everyones model release, so if it is a newsworthy event you can sell it as an editorial images, but you must leave all logos, print etc as is, Editorial images document a moment in history and they must reflect the events as they happened.
I will try to make a full video explaining all of this, but for now I hope this helps!
Thank you very much!!
🙏
great advices
Thank you!
Hi I have a google pixel 5 phone and was thinking of doing so photography with it, do you think the quality of the photos would be good enough to try and sell on some of the sites you mentioned?
as good as phones are they are still not good for commercial images, you can absolutely start with a phone, but focus on the areas that the phone excels at, like editorial images, bright light situations, and don't use zoom. It will be a lot more work with a phone, but it can be done. I recommend upgrading to a camera when you can and if you like it
Nice brooo..
Thank you!
Awesome video
Thank you!
Cool video! How do you handle situations where you have no model release, especially in other countries when doing street photography / shooting stuff when you travel? How do you ensure you are allowed to sell the image, especially when it's only 1 other person on it? That person might have consented to you taking the picture, but might not be happy if you sell it to others?
Sell it as editorial
If I know the person didn’t want to be in the image I won’t sell it, if they don’t know they are in my picture I sell it as editorial,
@@wollertz Thanks for getting back to me! Essentially: As soon as someone agrees to be in the picture, you can sell it, no matter what?
@@jhgfghjfuzrtfchchghgf no, editorial yes, but RF you need a model release, it’s much easier now, all you need is their email address, maybe I’ll make a video about that
Editorial you can sell without consent at all, but I like to give people comon courtesy

Also, I took a look to the list of agencies you use, and I noticed that you don't use iStock. Is there a reason for that? I'm new in stock photo, and I uploaded some of my photos on iStock, and I'm wondering if it's a good choice.
iStock is a good choice, I use ESP by getty, iStock is owned by getty, and for the longest time they kept rejecting me as a contributor 😅, so I gave up on them, when Getty made a few changes about 4 years ago I tried to ESP and they accepted me, and I do sell a fair amount, I just noticed the link is not on my descriptions, ill add it now. thanks you and best of luck!

I wanna start selling on adobe and shutterstock so what could you give me as a peice of advice and is It true that I have to upload 100 pic at once to get noticed ?
Hi! Thanks.
You don’t need 100 at a time, you need consistency. 10 a week, 20 a week whatever you can do to get to a few thousand images, you might not have any sales for 6 months or so, don’t worry, just keep uploading consistently
@@wollertz ok got it thanks for the reply and good luck keep it up
Hello sir can you please tell me how many photo and video you have in your portfolio and how much money we can expect through portfolio like you ?
So I have about 30 thousand not very good images 😅 I used Stock to learn, and theres a lot of images that will never sell because they are pretty bad, but with 30 thousand bad ones I still make about $1000 a month sometimes $500, but I haven't been very active in the last 3 years because youtube is taking a lot of my time
When I was active I was making a lot more.
Thanks for your comment sir how many years it took to upload 30k images it seems a lot.😅
3 or 4 maybe, I started making a car payment after 1 year and then by year 2 I was paying rent, year 3 I decided to travel, then I got busy with other stuff 😅
Really good to know 😎thanks for your time.
@@sachindesai4340 anytime!
sorry what are the main differences between editorial and comm? does editorial sell better?
Editorials are newsworthy photos, of events, people or places that freeze time at is is/was, editorials cant be modified, and only basic processing is allowed, not removing items or people, these images cant be used to sell or promote a product.
Commercial images are used to sell and promote products and baseness
@@wollertz thank you!! Love your vibe btw man super chill 🍀📸 so in your experience do editorials generally sell more/easier than let’s say various objects isolated on white for commercial use? Wish you all the best and appreciate sharing your knowledge
🤔 it’s tough to answer, I sell both about the same anount, but I don’t go out of my way to shoot editorials that sell (news, people, protests, etc) I just shoot random things Hera and there, some people only do editorials, but I’m not geographically centered for that 🤷♂️
Hope this helps and best of luck!
Thanks for the comments!
can the same image be sold to multiple platforms at one time?
Yes, as long as you don’t upload it as exclusive or as an exclusive photographer to an agency
At first i have to ask you that is it permissible to upload photo/image/video from others website like pixabay that have the licence to use these in commercial purpose.
So does shutterstock accept those photos?
If you're photos are on sale exclusively or if you are signed up as an exclusive photographer to any other site, then NO. But yes you can have the same images for sale on multiple agencies so long as they are not exclusive.

How long does it take to sell one of your pictures 400 times though?

Stock photography was good long ago, today it is a waste of time. A scam that gets photographers to provide photos for free. If you calculate the cost of equipment and photography costs, you are not breaking even, you are spending your money to provide photographs for someone else's benefit.
I’m still making close to $10000 a year with my average being well over $15k because of the years I was more active, I’m still active but not as much as I used to be. It’s not for everyone but it is a great way to learn and practice while you make some extra money
@@wollertz If you are spending more than you are making your net is negative. Since you are making pennies for every sale making gross $10 to 15K is wishful thinking. When you consider cost of equipment, time spent adding keywords, editing photos, traveling to locations and all other costs you are spending more than you are making. Sadly some people are getting payed to BS photographers in to this system of modern slavery.
I started in 2010, I’ve made over $180k and use it as an extra income, at one point I worked 30 or so hours a week doing this and that’s still paying today when I do 2 hours a week. All of my gear is paid for because of stock, and I get to shoot for many restaurants because of what I’ve learned from Stock. It’s worked for me and I know a few others that have made it a carrer since 2020 shooting from home. It’s not easy, but it can be done. I know that because I did it 🤷♂️
