- Alterous Attraction: the feeling of being emotionally drawn to someone, in a way that is not just platonic but also isn't romantic.
I worked super hard on this film! I animated the whole thing myself while also being a full time college student. This passion project draws on my own experiences as an A-spec person and I really hope it resonates with people.

This short reminded me of my own experiences, as an autistic person who struggles with telling the difference between different kinds of attraction. I’m so glad to see I’m not alone, and to see something as cute as the mind’s eye cartoon testing different scenarios.

Oh, this *hit.* The whole “I love you, but I’m not _in love_ with you.” Not wanting a romantic relationship, but being a bit too affectionate by platonic standards. It’s so puzzling.
He knew I had a crush on him. I knew he didn’t like me that way. Then, less than a month ago, I finally realized that I was never in love with him to begin with; I just _love_ him. Why should a romance be called “more than friends” if a best friend can make you feel so happy that you lose sleep? Why should I want “more” when what I already have is so wonderful?
considering sending this to him 😭 i am struggling so much and this is the only thing i have found that feels like it actually hits. that writing at the end is exactly how i feel towards him and it’s so hard to express properly without being nervous about ruining our bond.

Gosh this hits hard. I don't fall directly in this part of the spectrum, but the being up at night questioning, running the scenarios, questioning whether I can actually be aro or ace because factor x seems to contradict those identities. I've been there. Thank you for this.
I just had this convo w my bsf a week ago and I’m so happy she’s chill. I love her to bits! Anyways we didn’t want anything to change really but I want to call her my partner. She’s ok with the term but isn’t ready for the social pressure which I feel also. We just don’t wanna be bound by our actions meaning specific attractions I guess? I wanna hold her hand and tell her how much I love her! We’re gonna be roomates one day! Anyways, we’re really compatible and I’m so happy we’re in a place comfortable enough to have these conversations!

Dude, this genuinely helped me a lot with putting a label as to how I feel about certain relationships I have! Companionship is very important to me, but not in a way I’d want it to be romantic. This is a very touching animation and I hope you feel very proud of it for a long time 💪 It certainly has helped me at least.
Honestly, as someone who is experiencing this right now (?, unsure), this hits home. I love the smoothness of it and the way that you tell emotions so well, its like you’re ripping out my emotions and putting them into words!!! Being in a relationship like this can be a really scary and an unknown thing, especially if you’ve only just discovered that its not all clean cut between “romance” and “friendship”. Beautifully written and beautifully drawn and animated, deserves more views and likes for sure! Thank you for this!!!

I love my queerplatonic partner so much - it’s kinda funny- when we first started hanging out I gave them crystals just for fun, and they wrote me a letter with frog stickers and a fox eraser, and in the letter they wrote that they hoped frogs and foxes were still my favorite animals:)) I’m so glad that someone animated this- we barely get any representation❤❤❤

I felt this way towards a person i was very close too, and I knew this was that way the whole time, tho I told people it was probably a crush because I didn't have the words for it, even though I stopped talking to that I felt reaffirmed and now I feel and felt towards other people as well this gives me ways to describe it and feel comfortable, so thank you

YES. Its always amazing to see this kind of representation done well, especially since its rarely done at all! It can be so confusing and stressful when your definition of love doesn't match the "standard options". Wanting parts of them but not others can make you afraid to show a desire for any of it. At least that's the case for me. Almost accidentally saying "I love you" to a friend last week made me start thinking about it more than I have in a while, but I know I don't want a "relationship" like that. This was really well done and made me feel a bit better about the whole thing.

This felt so real. Ever since I learned about the term queerplatonic last year, and the oriented aroace label a few months ago, I’ve been able to understand myself so much better. This video only solidifies in my mind that I am an aroace who experiences alterous attraction.

When I read the definition of Alterous attraction I didn't really gel with it. I don't like how it implies seperation from platonic love.

This is reminding me of my own experiences with a couple of my best friends in the whole world. We're all moving in together someday, and I want to be able to provide for us. They have a lot of chronic pain and such that makes it hard to maintain traditional jobs, but they both have dreams of what they want to do in the future. Streaming, their own business. A small shop haven in a community. I want to support their dreams. We've saved each others lives and i'm so grateful to have met them. I am excited for the future, and what we make it out to be. No matter what comes next, we're gonna get through it together

Me and my bf are in a wavership, in the way where it’s difficult to label as romantic or platonic or a QPR. Platonic feels too weak, romantic feels sort of right but sort of wrong. One of our friends said “you guys aren’t exactly platonic or romantic, you’re just boyfriends” and I totally agreed with that. I’ve never heard of Alterous attraction but I think that’s what me and my bf feel for each other!! :D

Eventually i figured it out and she was really supportive. We're still best friends and plan on moving in together!
Edit: I just did some research on what alterous means and I'd like to clarify that I assumed it was the same ad platonic, I don't think our relationship is exactly alterous but I still do relate to this

This is so good! I'm pretty sure I'm aromantic 'cause I think I never felt romantic attraction. Only platonic and alterous attraction. I think 😅 I'm autistic and have a really hard time grasping the concept

I am Aroace. I know that a full on romance is nearly impossible for me, as someone who is incapable of romantic attraction. Though sometimes I fantasize about a future with a queerplatonic partner, someone I can commitedly love as more than friends, but not quite reaching that improbable romance standard. I have not experienced what I can classify as alterous attraction just yet. But I am hopeful that one day, I'll find the right person who I can express those kind of feelings with.

The way I’ve always seen it is, I’ve already told you you’re a friend so I don’t need to have x y z touch / affection boundary unless you seem uncomfortable and talk to me about it. If you’re my friend, you are my friend.
If you’re reading more into it because of my open affection and wanting to go the extra mile for my friends then that becomes a conversation and I double down that we are just friends. (And set any boundaries you need)
The only time I’ve ever guarded how I act around friends is if they were straight men (I’m a gay afab person) and they seemed like they were reading my actions wrong. Otherwise no, I’m gonna hug you for a long time, I’m gonna lean on you, sit on your lap, get you deeply thoughtful gifts, or small things just cus I saw it and thought of you. I’m gonna say I love you and you’re one of my favourite people, stay late and binge tv, share a chair or bed.
Friends should be people you’re very comfortable around.

Oh my goodness this is beautiful. I don’t think I personally relate to this much if at all, but i currently have a crush on somebody who is AroAce and have no clue how to approach it. Obviously the smart thing would be to just ask her what she wants us to be, but I don’t want to put that pressure on her. Except I also know that regular flirting would probably just confuse her. This really helped me understand more though, I’ve been trying to look into the topic more recently and I think this explains it really well. Thank you. The animation is also very beautiful!

I have this friend that Ive known for several years, he's amazing and I love him so much, I have no idea if I feel this way about him??? He's an amazing friend. I've been through several scenarios of if I have romantic feelings for him or not, and it never feels right, I can never say that Id want to be with him romantically, that just feels weird af. I can't tell if I just think of him as the bestest friend I ever had(which is true) or that bit more that's making me confused???
I LOVE seeing cute romance in books or shows/movies, but I can't really imagine it for myself?? Long before I noticed that Im probably aro in some way I thought "What's even the point of being in a relationship?? If you know you're most likely just gonna break up and be sad about it. Friendships are more stable in that way" and I still feel that way about the idea of a romantic relationship, it feels so unstable and "what if Id fall out of love with my partner but still want them as a friend?" or "What if I begin dating this person that has genuine feelings for me but then I realize I DONT feel that way about them after all?"

I'm glad this found me. I'm still unsure how much this fits me, as I would love to have both cakes from both sides (romantic and sexual, platonic and neutral;) but I feel them clash so much against the rocky walls that is what is socially, societal accepted or known as relationships of those types.
I hope lil odd me can find a people to belong alongside with. Whether it be one, a few, or a ton.

clicking on this by chance was the best thing i could do. I didnt know what this was and I have the exact same experience i just didnt know thats what it was. I have a friend whom I love with my whole heart. I love them but Im not sexually or physically attracted to them (aesthetically maybe). They are non-binary (they were amab so idk if i would be attracted nvm its so complicated) and i am a lesbian. I have thought about this being romantic since forever but i just dont want it. I dont want the kissing, or sex or anything and i still crave that sometimes generally (like not from person just like i want to kiss someone etc). I just don't think i have enough space to have this "friendship" AND a romantic relationship. it feels like this is all i have and also this is all i want. so thankyou. thankyou for making something i could find and identify with. its a crazy world but you just cured 90% of my worry.
It is saddening that there are rules. I've been lucky in not having to follow them (my partners are friends and the depth of connection does suddenly mean we have to start being romantic or sexual. The option is there for us and we are both allosexual (not sure about romance, not opposed to it just hard to tell what affection is and isn't romantic a lot of the time) but there's never been pressure to do anything if that makes sense?). I often forget how birds of a feather flock together, so I'm surrounded by people who didn't grow up with allonormativity shoved down their throats and who are generally just chill. I've noticed most aces I've met come from unfortunately and rigidly allonormative backgrounds/communities, which makes them feel trapped / pressured. Then again, I'm probably the outlier to not be surrounded by allonormativity.
