Gene was so special to the world of film, and it seems that because he wasn't in the public light for 3 decades, that he was somewhat frozen in time by his look of the 70s-80s, whereas many other stars age over time via the public spotlight. He was a national treasure. There was no one like him, and his relationship with Brooks seems like something that brothers share. Legendary.

My dad had a best friend who he met when he was 5. They graduated together, did the Marine Corps together, married close friends, had sons only months apart, just everything. They were ALWAYS there for each other, period. His friend died of a sudden heart attack 15 years ago. I'd never seen my big, strong Marine dad so broken hearted, and it was brutal. By the grace of God, my daughter was born weeks later. She was over 2 months premature, she needed so much love and support, and my dad was so there for her, coming to just hold her and helping with her big brother so I could be at the hospital. She helped him in one of his darkest hours, just as he helped her. I know it was incredibly painful to lose a friend like that, but how lucky he is to have had one so faithful. Not many can say that, and I think it tells so much about who they both were, men to admire.

Jimmy Fallon is such a lightweight. It's his tv show, yet the celebrities, mostly the old guard, run the show. Just look at this interview and the one with Don Rickles. The whole show had nothing to do with Fallon, and Rickles spent most of the time taking shots at Jimmy's nervous breakdown. Watch some of Johnny Carson's interviews, they felt engaging and genuine.

Fallon doesn't feel the need to compete w/ his guests like other hosts, if the guests can handle themselves, he's happy to sit back and just enjoy his guests w/ the audience. He's also very concerned about everybody having a good time at the show, including his guests, so his brand of comedy is good natured, he doesn't take jabs at ppl...only at ppl he's friendly with and/or he's sure they can take it & enjoy it (eg. Timberlake, Blake Shelton, Colin Quinn). He actually took a jab at Rickles during their last interview & he winked at him to make sure he was ok.

I wanna mention the one man that saved Mel Brooks's and Gene Wilder's career: Peter Seller. This man accidentally watched one of their movies. The Producers just came out and it only opened in a couple cities. It looked like a dud and studio seemed to let fade from existence.
Peter Seller started a movie club around this time and watched movies with friends. The movie they were suppose to watch was missing and the only film they had was the Producers. Sellers watched the film and absolutely loved it, he then took out two front cover ads in the two biggest newspapers in the States and praised it. It soon got a release nationwide and went to win an academy award.
