      Same XD Fairy Tail's filled to the brim with archetypes that are pretty common in shonen(such as the loud blockhead or the girl who's a close friend and not a love interest to the main character). There's one thing that gives these characters potential though: backstories. Nearly every character, if not all, has something interesting about their past that is explored. However, I barely see any character development more than an inch from any of them. Erza and the ex-villians are some I can probably count but everyone else is overwhelmingly the same. Such a shame because some characters such as Natsu, while really generic in terms of character has something quite shocking, could've been much more.

    It's really great to see how she develops more and more while she is growing up. I think another good thing about Anne is the dynamic between her, Marilla and Matthew and how she interacts with other characters.

    I love it when a series can have entire side stories focused around side characters where the main character(s) don't appear and are just as compelling as the main story. I also think it's important to have main characters who sometimes fail, make a big mistake, or don't succeed in their goals. FMA Brotherhood is a great example of what I mean.

    Great video. One of my favourite characters in anime/manga has to Sakuragi Hanamichi from the basketball anime, Slam Dunk. He is a great example of character progression. He starts off knowing literally nothing about basketball and doing it only to impress a girl to being a decent player that just loves the sport. This slow progression with his character, allows the series to truly shine. The series teaches you basketball along side Hanamichi making each of his accomplishments in learning new things more personal as you've been with him during that period of training. He motivates his teammates to perform better by stating he is better, though obviously not. The side characters as well present a likeable cast. from Hanamichi's delinquent friends trying always to show up during his games, though they make fun of him when he fails to Hanamichi's love interest being a psychological helping hand to Hanamichi, keeping his spirit high. There is so much to the characters that make them enjoyable, but that just goes into Takehiko Inoue's philosophy on story telling, that if you've got good and likeable characters they will they a good story.

    I have never understood how people can separate a story from its characters. They are indisputably one in the same. A good story is one that explores multiple facets of its characters, and how they all interact with one another. A plot cannot advance without someone, somewhere, making a decision at some point. Any distinctions we attempt to make are far too arbitrary to be of sound logic. I encourage anyone to find a story in which the actions of characters don't advance the plot. If you can, present it to me and I'll tell you how you're wrong.

    A good character is based first on his plot. From that you can adapt the character to his/her environment and social situation, allowing for a good artist to craft that character straight out of his or hers environment in a way that is unique, thus relatable because people are interested in what is other than themselves.

    Honestly, a person could write enormous essays just about certain character types, and saying that one thing in particular is what makes "good characters" doesn't make much sense to me. As an example, since I love villain characters, I was thinking about what makes a good one, and after a lot of thinking I realized the only thing all good villains must have in common is one sort of presence or another, since there are so many things that have made me love villains. Ozymandias's appeal is his motivation, which one might think essential, but Ladd Russo and Solf J. Kimblee's motivations are literally just "I want to kill people" and I love both those guys. But all three have presence. Same with Envy from FMA, who is weak as hell, but still has presence.
    But the same cannot be said for other character types. For one example, Hideo from "I am a hero" is a great character, but large parts of the first volume are dedicated to showing that he isn't really worthy of attention. He isn't eye-grabbing, the only reason we read about him is that the story forces us to follow him. And yet, he is compelling.
    (Spoilers for the game series "Zero Escape" ahead. If you haven't played them, do so immediately. They're awesome.)
    Also, for a character to be the "bad guy", they don't have to be clearly wrong, like the aforementioned Ozymandias, or Zero from Zero Escape. Many amazing villains are as such because of the grey area you described.

    One of the very best examples for a work with good charakters is the manga Lone Wolf and Cub. The feud between the protagonists and the Yagyuu is wonderful in its emotional depth and realism and the whole conflict is conveyed very effectively.
    And Daigoro Ogami, the little son of the protagonist, is also very special. Although he mostly doesn’t say anything, you completely understand his feels and thoughts by looking at his face. There also are many characters that only feature for one chapter, but that doesn’t reduce their expressiveness and realism. But Lone Wolf and Cub is a timeless classic must read anyway.

      Elvis Cosovic That’s no easy question. The matter rather is when you really get into it, and that can take more or less time. It took me around 40 chapters, I would say. In the end, it’s all so worth anyway.
      And yes, the basical story has its progression later, but the episodic structure of LW&C is one of the things I loved so much about it.

    Baccano would have been a good example for this topic. It's an interesting subversion of the "good guy, bad guy" archetype because although the show very much does have bad guys and good guys, it doesn't have any set protagonist and antagonist, and the events of the show are explored through the perspective of each of the characters equally. It's one of the things that makes Baccano so much more interesting than if it had a standard linear narrative.

    ONE PIECE is an anime with outstanding character development. (Oda Eiichiro's a genius storyteller!) Not just the Straw Hat crew, but minor characters like Nami's late foster mother Bellemere, who appears in flashback in episodes 36 and 37. Their enemies aren't all simple villains--witness the government man Captain Smoker.

    I really liked this video, basicly because I have pretty much the same opinion on the importance and need of good characters. And at one point you really opened my eyes, because sometimes in a series a character seems flat and I get the feeling that he/she is missing something, but until now I wasn´t able to really define, why they seemed so empty. But a narritional reason makes so much sense. The character doesn´t exist to enhance the world he/she is in, but to simply push the plot or to have fanservice. And at the point his/her usefulness ends he/she isn´t explored anymore and has nothing for his/her self to show as a character. And as a viewer I get extremely unsatisfired, because I want the character to show more, because he/she has potential and, as you said, could have the chance to watch the story from another perspective. So thank you very much to help me understand my unsatisfactional feeling with some characters. I enjoy watching your videos and your critical view is very challenging and entertaining. Thank you again and have a nice day :)

The type of characters I hate are the characters created to elicit kneejerk disdain or kneejerk sympathy -- priests, disabled people, etc. Those kind of characters appear more often in western fiction, though, and are a at the extreme end of the "good" vs "bad" characterization spectrum. .

    One thing i don't think you touched on was having an extreme passion, motive, or goal. Having a goal, even if it's temporary, allows the viewers to know where we are headed and this is why not having one derails a series. Without a character having a motive for a goal that fits their character, they lose all sense of purpose and can start to become lackluster (note i said starts) Although some series may not have goals they may make it up by having events that progress their characters' personality, in which case it could be argued that the goal is personal progress (but I'm not here to say that). I do also want to add that progression or development in general needs a set agenda to really turn a character to life

    • @joshking5884
      @joshking5884 2 года назад

      I forgot to say that you also need dynamics. It's boring have a character being overused for one simple trait and without any exclamation to it. Having a character that thinks and processes their surroundings and how it affects them is important. The best way to show this is physically and verbally. Don't outright say "I'm mad" instead throw the hands into the air growling and muttering to themselves "i won't stand this any longer." That dynamic expression is more interesting and so are character traits. Having a shy character is cool but having a shy character that tries to open up is more interesting because it's dynamic (that specific illustration is also polarization but I've seen amazing characters made without it, and it's usually better to have polarization between different characters like a hothead and a sensitive person being friends). So have dynamic characters and don't be afraid to really show it off.

    Attack on Titan has some good characters. Reiner is the best-written out of all of them. So is Grisha. I know he's overhyped, but Levi's interesting, too. The manga adds a bit more to his character.

    I finished watching Zegapain last night, lol. Now I see a short clip of it at the beginning of this video. I have to say that I like it as an anime, love it as an existentialist piece of art, and sort of dislike it as a story.
    1) As an anime, I like it because it provided a few of dynamic characters that I could focus on: Kyo, Kaminagi, Lu-Shen, and even Shima. They all changed to some degree by the time the show ended, which is what I look for in character development.
    2) The existentialism brought a rather interesting twist (I promise I'm not spoiling, for anyone who is reading this message and hasn't watched Zegapain). Let's just say that the execution of existential philosophy was unique to me, and it totally caught me off-guard.
    3) I sort of dislike the story mainly because of what the protagonists are fighting for, and what they're motivated by. The villains just didn't seem all that villainous, and they actually seemed like characters that I could sympathize with to a degree. Although I would not condone the methods used by the villains to achieve their goal, I do agree with their goal. All I'm saying is that the conflict could have at least had a form of reasonable compromise in the end, and the protagonists could have defeated the main villain while also continuing on the main villain's original dream to make everyone happy.

    I don't entirely agree with all this. Characters are a subset of story, not an independent element. A character's motivations are often tied into the plot. If you don't have one, you don't have the other. I would say Kaiji did change somewhat, through the show as well. Not hugely, but he was more tenacious and obsessed with gambling at the end, than he was at the start. But I do think people often confuse the terms 'change' and 'develop'. A character doesn't need to change to develop. And I definitely agree that more critique should go into characters than just 'not developed enough'. There's a lot more to characterisation than development. Johan is one of the best of those villain type characters, but I don't think he's the most evil, and I find extremely evil characters, entertaining to watch, even if they don't offer much complexity. Shira from Blade of the Immortal is more evil than Johan, and while not as good of a character, he certainly suits his role very well. Focusing in grey areas and grey morality is good, but I don't think shows should be limited to that. No doubt that Yang and Reinhard's relationship, is greater than any straight up Hero/villain dichotomy, though. Very good video.

      Inspector Lunge, Wolfgang Grimmer, Eva Heinemann. Monster would be nothing without its side characters. I still love the conflict between Tenma and Johan, but damn do the side characters make the show what it is.
      Other favorites:
      Yoshii from Texhnolyze: The way he challenges the other characters to stop being idle with their lives.
      Scar from FMA 03: How he challenges Edwards view of alchemy/equivalent exchange.
      Griffith Guts and Casca from Berserk: Most complex trio of characters in terms of how they affect one another's dreams.
      Pino from Ergo Proxy: I love how every character wants to take care of her for their own. All I have to say, is at the end, I think Kristeva lied when she said Raul appointed her to take care of Pino.
      Great video. Id love to see more on the topic. Characters are my favorite thing about any story really, from any medium.

    Talking about character development, I'd say Re-L from Ergo Proxy is the most badass example there can be. The transition of her personality throughout the entire show is gradual and subtle--just like the way it should be in real life. In real life, many people's personality don't change by single dramatic events like a terrorist attack or somebody's death, but through the mundane daily life in the environment they live in. And Ergo Proxy just does a brilliant job in portraying that--especially THAT episode on the boat.

    erm, if you want some constructive criticism on how to do video, here's one:
    there are no time stamps for the viewer (not actual ones)
    but next time, try to watch your video, then skip, to someplace else, it's hard to notice differences
    this is bad because it's less memorable on what you've been talking about because it'd be remembered as someone blabbering for the whole time
    when you change topic, change something, be it music, colour tones, background art style, etc.
    somethings that makes the viewer remember your points, rather than just someone talking

    • @AnimeEverydayYT
      @AnimeEverydayYT  8 лет назад +3

      I'll take note of the music choices (I normally use 4-5 different tracks in other videos) but if a viewer isn't interested enough to remember what happened in the previous minute of the video then this probably isn't the channel for them. Thanks for the critique though, i'll take it into consideration :)

    • @vzxvzvcxasd7109
      @vzxvzvcxasd7109 8 лет назад +1

      no, i do know you use different tracks, but this video made me pointed it out
      because your music choices, are alot of times, quite similar, i understand that you may want to try to maintain a flow, and, well, i don't clearly remember, but it seems that you don't use music in conjunction with the flow of what you talk about
      some to change up in the background mood was what i was trying to say, because visuals makes the biggest impacts
      normally, i'd like to tell someone to use longer shots, instead of cutting alot in the background, but anime as source doesn't help
      so maybe try picking scenes of similar colour tones when making one point (like aria, pick the sunset scenes for a point, then interior scenes for a point, then rowing scenes for a point)
      i know it's alot of work, and also a reason why i gave up editing videos for people, takes too much effort to produce good things for free

    What makes a good character? A character that acts like human and not like some robot, like in most anime, TV shows and movies they are(acting like a robot). Shows like The Wire, Band of Brothers, Sopranos are great because you see humans, people you can relate and attach; movies such as City of God, The Wind Rises, Good Will Hunting, Winter Sleep share the same traits as the aforementioned TV shows, heck even the "bad" guys in these shows and movies are not bad per se, it's just the surrounding that they've grew or are in.
    Often times, in anime, I enjoy the side characters more than the main characters, because those side characters have more depth to them than the main character that's been developed for far more than some introductory side character that shows here and there, yet trumps the main character in terms of depth.

    Similar to what you said there various ways to make good characters. Character dynamics are imo a very important part in making good characters as it not gives us further insight into the minds of these characters, but it also can help make them feel much more believable and human to the audience (if handled correctly that is).
    I also find the idea of the audience having to fill in the gaps as to how a character evolved into what they are now to kinda suck. In Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, Char himself makes some very extreme decisions which were very hard for me to swallow. While the reasoning to why he's become this way can be somewhat implied, the fact that there is no point where we see him develop to become the person he is in CCA annoyed me to no end.

That's not nearly good enough, most of the "strong" female characters are just basic caricatures playing off pre-established tropes and they never head anywhere in terms of progression and setting themselves said from the plethora that we get exposed to. It's like for every 1 strong female character you get 10 that are just rudimentary (gross overexageration perhaps)

Is he implying that Lord of the Rings is a kids movie or superhero movie? It may not exactly be "The Godfather" in adult content but I'd hardly call it a "kid's" movie (most kids couldn't pay attention due to the long runtime!). I think superhero would only apply using the losest definition. I really think he may be incorrect on that one point. Good guy vs bad guy, restricting as it is, certainly has a place at all levels.
