    "Fun" fact. Ku originally died here. But play test, very understandable, were not for this development *at all*. Eventually the developers recognized that, besides being really sad and awful, Ku dying partway through this game kind of make the ending of the last game a lot more bitter, so they changed it to a coma.

    As everyone has said, there is no "right way" at this part of the game. There is a wrong way, though; The game doesn't explain it very clearly, but only three of the four remaining wisps can be gotten at this point. The fourth must always be last, and it doesn't actually say which one that is. It's not too bad to find out for yourself which, though, so I'll leave it at that.

    • @Stratelier
      @Stratelier 2 года назад +4

      Yeah, you at least get a new ability (and a few fast-travel points) out of the trek.

  • @Stratelier
    @Stratelier 2 года назад +16

    15:24 - Yeah, the way Ori is just solemnly holding Kuro's feather ... no fanfare, no triumphant raising it up to the sky like when you first acquired it (in the first game or even during this game's prologue), that feather is much more than just "a" feather now.
    So, you know another sound FX that is just too realistic for its own good? The teeth-clacking sound of Klaptraps from Donkey Kong Country 1. Even though it was just SNES, _something_ about that _specific_ sound FX was just completely unsettling.
    Here, what makes that "ripping velcro off" type sound FX hit so gross isn't the sound itself, but the _context_ of knowing just what it correlates to.

    Yyyep. This game is just as heart-wrenching as the first one. It just doesn't hit you with all the feels right off the bat.
    It's a neat (if somber) touch that Kwolok's leitmotif goes from his throne room when he leaves. All that remains is the background musical elements.
    I also went to the Windswept Wastes first, but really, you can do any of the four new areas in any order.
    Pretty sure the spikes in the Windswept Wastes just do 3 damage. Even in the first game, different spikes did different amounts of damage.

    Edit: I just realized an obvious thing to do to help answer my questions below. I went back and found one of the playthroughs I watched from 3 years ago (the channel is called "The BS", if you want to see for yourself) and indeed, Ku's chest is rising and falling. Ku is 100% alive and just out cold. Or at least that's how it was back then. So either it was changed in an update or the animation didn't play because of a bug or something. So, still don't know if it was deliberate or not. Anyway, here's my original comment:
    Odd, when I played this game and when I watched others do let's plays of it ages ago I could have sworn that you could see Ku breathing (Ku's chest rising and falling subtly). I even remember let's players commenting on how they noticed that exact thing. Did I imagine it? I've rewinded and watched it multiple times and don't see it. Am I missing it? Do you have to hang around longer to see it? Did they change it in a update or something? In other vids I see people thinking that Ku is dead in that scene and that the goal is now to resurrect her, which was definitely not the case before. I also remember reading that the devs originally had Ku die but then changed it based on playtesting feedback. Now it feels like it's in a frustratingly confusing vague and flip-floppy middle ground to me. Anybody know what's up?

    I think I did Windswept Wastes second, mostly because Luma Pools when I visited it caught my immediate attention and the feather meant I could explore it.
    After that I wanted to explore the silent woods more. Baur's Reach I did third because *bear* and Mouldwood Depths last because I didn't get introduced to something about it beforehand.
    That's how I like my Metroidvanias. I remember what I saw, I get something that can make me progress in said place that I saw a thing in, and then I just wing it and explore.

    I also didn't feel much sadness at Ku's "death". For one, I could see it coming for a mile away, there was still plenty of the game left meaning that something would have to happen to stop them from leaving, and the trailers for the game only advertised the Ku riding in the Silent Woods. And for another, the first game already presented the idea of dead family being resurrected, so I knew that the tragedy of Ku's "death" would be undermined before Kwolok even presented the idea. And it also turns Ku into Ori's motivation to help Niwen, instead of her own character.
    In comparison, I bawled my eyes out at Naru's death in the first game, and still cried for a few more watches after that, even though her death was also visible from a mile away due to the "death of the parental figure" trope.
    It would have been better if Ori and Ku made the choice to stay and help, or finding the Wisps was presented as the way to fix Ku's wing. Ku could have hung out in the Wellspring Glades and/or appeared on certain locations on the map for flying sections (Ori not getting the feather). It wouldn't give a big dramatic scene for the shift into the second act of the game, but it would feel more genuine than what we got and treat Ku as more than a plot device.

    I didn’t go into the windswept wastes until after I got all the other wisps, probably because
    A. You have to go through the silent woods to get there, even though I had already been through them it felt a tad unnerving
    B. The wisp in the wastes is the heart of the forest, which feel a bit more important than the other three
    Oh and on that note the game says “three wisps left” because I’m fairly certain you have to get the other three BEFORE the heart of the forest
