The EU is going to have to become more pragmatic and less dogmatic with regards to freedom of movement, immigration, and allowing refugees to enter. Whether we liberals like it or not reactionary attitudes are dominant and trying to nullify and ignore them you end up with Trump. We need to get closer to the EU and they need to be closer to us. It's Europe that is in peril now, not just the EU. Trump will destroy NATO, Ukraine will be under Russian dominance and if Europe doesn't get it's own defence in order so will we. Ukraine has given us a window to rearm before Russia does.

America has now abdicated from any form of moral high ground. How can they now credibly tell the rest of the world how to behave? Europe needs to progressively separate itself from an isolationist USA and become more independent, politically, militarily and economically. Europe is larger than the USA...larger population, greater GDP. It can do it if well managed. But can we expect the EU to manage that well? What other choice do we have?

To a demagogue, lack of reasoned argument that stems from literacy is a convenient path to domination. There were forty million illiterate and barely literate adults in the US according to a national survey by the Department Of Education. At that time, literacy amongst young adults had declined sharply in the previous decade - 1980s, this was in 1994. Now extrapolate forwards thirty years with either no improvement or a further deterioration and regard that there is a strong correlation between literacy and reasoned judgement.

    You are all wrong.
It is not about rationality, race, or people's ignorance or even the economy. It is about change. American system is like an old mobile phone before smart phones came about.
Every system starts with a clear straightforward design, but complexity starts increasing until it becomes so complex that its benefits start to become irrelevant. In the case of politics and social systems this results in people becoming detached because it is too complex and full of contradictions.
In a way governments and opposition are like criminal gangs and as some Cosa Nostra members used to say: sometime a war is necessary to wash out the bad blood.
Brexit, Trumps election and now his return are signs of that. People's detachment from Alistair's discourse is the inevitable result. From people's point of view, they just feel the pressure of the system an₫ they just want change.
This is why revolutions come about, as a manifestation of people exacerbation that has transcended logic and discussions. After a while whatever the establishment says sounds the same and people switch it off and the disconnect becomes automatic.
They might not be racist, or support dictatorship or even poor and yet each of those characteristics give birth to a simplistic solution for their own biases but what brings them together is the stress and exacerbation that each group feels and stressed.
Elon Musk is fed-up with regulations, the racists keep seeing more people of different colors to themselves, and the poor see themselves getting poorer compared to 'others'. Human beings' perceptions are based on subjective choices and their cognition is limited. They see what they want to see.
Anyone who becomes an alternative enables people to see their own alternative in them. Had Democrats been able or prepared to think out of the box and do something that affects everyone they would have been able to re-engage people into the process. But off course that was impossible because of being part of the established order.
It was clear that Harris was not willing or unable to differentiate herself from Biden and that was perceived as failure, lost her, her novelty. She suddenly became nothing but the puppet of the "establishment" and symbol of no change. The worst slogan was to return to normal. People don't want to return to normal. Thay have had enough of "the normal". It is like giving a kid the same Christmas present every year without regards to the kid's development.
Political pundit should really pay attention to the changes in the language and take their etymology seriously. The changes in the language are indicative of what is changing in society.

This is one of the reasons the centre-left keeps losing to populist nationalists. Because they can't distinguish ethno-nationalism from civic nationalism. Now, I'm no fan of Trump's aggresive nationalist rhetoric. But he is not an ethno-nationalist. His arguments are never along the lines of race. They're about legal vs illegal immigrants, foreign criminals, or people who refuse to integrate with US culture.
