hello, at 19:08 , can the striving for right also mean like striving for human rights? like she loves him freely just as she beleives striving for your own basic human rights is a free thing to do. thanks
Hi, I'm a bit confused. In line 8, what exactly does Barrett mean by praise? Praise quite literally means to express gratitude to someone. I don't see how that fits in with the stuff Barrett is talking about. Thanks for your help :)
Hiya - this is what I think when she talks about praise: When capitalised, 'Praise' is being used in a more Christian sense. Praise, it seems, is something reserved for, and only for, God. This suggests, to me, that the men 'strive for Right' and do good things not because they want recognition for it (which would be impure, apparently), but because it is the right thing to do. Their actions are pure and genuine and they do not seek praise, as this is something that only God may receive. Does that make sense? The men do good things and do not want praise (which should be reserved for God - seeking it would be almost blasphemous), making their actions pure, a purity that EBB sees in her love for Robert.
Great question! When I'm talking about language, I'm talking about what words literally mean, or what they might be associated with. When I'm talking about imagery, I'm talking about the 'pictures' that are made in your mind by a phrase (sometimes a word). Imagery is usually non-literal (i.e. if you were to say 'DystopiaJunkie is an angel,' you aren't saying that I literally have wings and a halo, etc; instead you are saying that you think I am looking out for you, well-intentioned, and so on), whereas when I'm talking about language, it's usually more literal, or certainly less of a leap of logic (i.e. when talking about word associations or connotations). I hope that makes sense!

Hey - that's definitely a valid interpretation, yeah, especially when you consider that her father (who she did not like) was a slave owner!

Sir, what is the difference between imagery and language?
Great question!
