In actuality, this audience was not made up of Queen fans. Live Aid was a duel-venue music festival held jointly at Wembley Stadium in London, and at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia on July 13, 1985, to raise money for the fight against the terrible famine in Ethiopia. There were over 60 different acts that performed that day beginning at 12 noon in London (which was 7:00AM in Philadelphia) at Wembley Stadium and then JFK Stadium joined in at around 1:50PM Philadelphia time. This concert was broadcast worldwide via the BBC, ABC, & Viacom networks using 13 satellites (which had never been done before, and yeah, there were some technical problems), The festival ran 16 hours in total.
Queen was not announced as performers at the festival until all 72,000 of the tickets at Wembley had already been sold. The band was rather nervous about performing at Live Aid because by this time Queen was considered kind of old (they'd been rock stars for over a decade) and they were afraid that the kids in the audience would not know them.
In addition, Queen was known for the massive light, smoke, and sound elements during their concerts (they were pioneers in this). Here at Live Aid, all bands were given a 20-minute slot and had to play on the same stage using basically the same light and sound equipment. So they had to depend solely on just their talent to excite this audience. It had been years since they played on a simple stage without their accouterments.
They always took their performances seriously and they put together a tight show for the audience. They actually rehearsed for a week before the concert. They specifically chose songs that they hoped this audience would recognize and put the show together to build excitement in them. Queen was slotted to perform at 6:40 PM London time, so the audience had been out there since 12 noon and was probably very low energy by this point.
According to people who were there, as soon as Queen began, the mood backstage changed as they sense a difference in the audience. Everyone began moving to the stage wings to listen and were amazed to see and hear the audience participating along with Queen as though it was rehearsed. By the 3rd song (Hammer To Fall), everyone backstage was mumbling, "They're stealing the show".
Queen's Live Aid performance is considered by most as the best live performance by a band ever!
    BTW their names are:
Freddie Mercury - Lead singer & piano
Brian May - Lead guitar & singer
    John Deacon - Bass guitar
Roger Taylor - Drummer & singer

I would add to the descriptions of each person's role in the band "songwriter" - every one of them wrote at least one number 1 hit song, and their songwriting process was largely collaborative. In the early days of Queen, only the primary writers of each song got songwriting credits and thus the royalties from those songs, but later on, they decided to credit the entire band for all of their songs from that point forward so that everyone got equal royalties for each song. They were all so amazingly talented at everything they did!

No to mention that Brian May is playing a guitar that he built himself along with his Dad out of a table top, bits of old radios and motorcycle engine parts and a fire place mantlepiece. Just imagine how much it would be worth? He still plays it in live shows today alongside Adam Lambert.

72,000 London, 90,000 Philadelphia.. live satellite link and live TV audience estimated at 1.9 billion. Queen 👑❣️ were not confirmed to play until after all tickets sold!!! So guys, this isn’t even a fan based audience!! Apparently when the organiser (Bob Geldof) was persuading Queen to play, “Freddie this will be your perfect audience” ... “the World” 😂
one thing for sure, they always gave it their all... the ultimate professional musicians....they created and rehearsed this specific set and without any of the stage effects they were well known for ... absolutely smashed it! It was one of those moments in time we can all remember where we were..
For Queen fans it was no surprise ... Queen knew how to play huge arenas ... Queen live in Rio is the largest estimated audience .. depending on who you believe ... 250,000 to 350,000 people. Mind boggling!
What surprised me even at the time was how ill prepared many of the bands appeared to be... some may have been overwhelmed at size of audience and the overall event but some who you would have expected to be great, simply were not. What stands out most is that Freddie was clearly loving every moment.. you can see a look of relief a few bars into Bohemian Rhapsody as crowd is singing and after the crowd interaction his eyes are shining and he looks excited but totally relaxed at same time.. amazing ❣️
    Nice reaction ...👏👏

I watched this as it was broadcast live on TV. The bands, by universal agreement, only got 20 minutes each to perform, so they had to do shortened down versions of their songs, because they had to get set up real quick for the next act. It started in the morning in London and then later at RFK Stadium in Philadelphia and they would alternate the broadcast between the 2 stages. So while Queen was playing in London, Bon Jovi was getting set up in Philly. And then, while Bon Jovi was playing, Def Lepard was getting set-up in London, etc. It was cool. And I think it went from like 8am to 8pm, thats how many people were playing. But there were bands from all over.
And, quick side note, Phil Collins played BOTH stages. He did a set in London and then flew to Philadelphia and performed another full set.

All the biggest bands performed, but all the tickets had been sold out before it was even announced that Queen would play. 70,000 people at Wembley, not necessarily all Queen fans, but they were by the end of it. Then he saw the Radio Ga Ga performance and how Queen just raised the volume (literally, their sound engineer turned the sound up past the limit). just so much amazing energy from this set. Bowie told them how was he meant to follow that?! and status quo called them gobshites for being so amazing 🤩

When the tickets for this concert went on sale, Queen were not on the play list, so this is not a Queen audience. Thought to be "past their best" by many, Freddie, John, Brian and Roger proved the doubters wrong, Even the audience in Philadelphia joined in the clapping on Radio Gaga, as as an aside, Lady Gaga took her name from this song. Officially 72,000 at Wembley, unofficially 80,000, plus an estimated 1.9 billion watching via satellite world wide. 85,000 in Philli too.

Rodger is the dimmer, Brain is the electric guitar and John is the base guitar. They all wrote songs for Queen the was hits like 2 I know John wrote another bites the dust and bohemian rhapsody was wrote by Freddie also Freddie wrote Crazy little thing called love was a tribute to Elvis. A fact I found out Freddie had laryngitis and doctor told not to going but still did and could lost his voice altogether also the other fact Lady Ga Ga is a Queen fan which how she got the Ga Ga from a song

Nice to see you sit back and let the whole thing play through. As it goes, the crowd were not ardent Queen fans per se. The Live Aid concert was organised in a hurry to get as much money as quickly as possible to feed the starving in Africa, and Queen were not slated to appear initially. Also before the concert Freddie had lymph node problems and docs advised him not to take part but he said no. Incidentally the second track, Radio GaGA is where lady GaGa took her name from. Oh, and it's about the time before everyone had a TV and we used to find out what was happening in the World in general, and musically in particular via our radios. Kind of ironic since one of Queens best known songs, Bohemian Rhapsody, was considered to be one of the first ever songs to have a dedicated video to it :)
