Basically you pick it up, the shell starts to travel towards your hands, then you switch guns - and so the character doesn't actually catch it, the shell continues to travel following inertia. But because speed and animations of gun swapping affect the initial trajectory, it may differ depending on a gun you're swapping (to?).
good way to start a bug dive... rush in, give hive guard back shots, destroy it's nest, never elaborate

Press the weapon switch button immediately after hitting the button to pick up the shell :)
