accuracy is no accident, i always thought FX took Black Hole Weaponarys idea on their first Smooth twist impact barrels, the classic Caudle 3 lands barrel. so much to say. its more of a "ARC" less friction on the projectile, and NASA like equal balance on opposing force's of projectile's. polygon barrels create a lot of drag. and traditional Enfield rifling creates all the cut particles of soft lead pellets = keeping clean for accuracy

Fx barrel maybe accurate and no need cleaning. But i had the most problems with FX barrels vs other barrels which is not mentioned in this review.
    1. The fx barrel is like airsoft, held together by o rings. Weak and tend to keep losing point of impact. Very troublesome to keep zeroing and worry during trekking hunt the barrel gets knock and poi shift. Missed shots.
    2. My impact barrel expanded due to double pallet shot stuck inside. The barrel is thin and weak. Unlike LW tough and strong realiable m.

I only experience in 177 and polygon or 12 groove lothar walther, polygon and 12 groove LW shoot very well in long distance. Most of 177 barrel only shoot very good until 50-60 m, but LW shoot very well till 100-120 m with slug.
Fx also good but remember that in the past fx smooth twist end only shoot good with JSB, not with other brand pellets, and i believe its a main topic discussion in fx group in the past.
My friend has fx dreamline made in 2020 end, i believe that has superior liner but it didnt shoot very well with NSA slug. But it shoot exceptional good with JSB pellets.
The polygon yes, it picky barrel, mostly it regarding pellet loading profile and internal diameter tolerance not because polygon profile it self.
If u said that lothar walther didnt shoot very well in long distance, remember that RTi Priest 2 win XBR 2019 with Lw polygon barrel with longer twist rate. I like the video but i didnt agree at many points of your methode to make conclusion

Hammer forging work hardens the steel surface. No need to harden it.
You are never going to quench harden a rifled barrel. It will warp all over the place.
You can partially stress relieve hammer forged barrels at about 400 degrees C, without softening them. Cryogenic treatment of hammer forged barrels is common to reduce thermal POI shifting.

At some point everything that is successful gets copied. I mean, someone was first to hammer forge barrels, someone was first to CNC machine a barrel, and someone was the first to pull a button through a barrel. So FX was first to create the smooth twist technique and it seems to work well. Why shouldn’t other companies have a go at a similar technique? FX’s older guns didn’t have smooth twist barrels, so who did they copy with their earlier designs? I don’t own a Delta Wolf, and never will because I don’t like electronics in my air guns. I prefer precision machining over computer controlled nonsense. But I have a hard time seeing it as an Impact clone at all. Many air rifles have the same basic “tacticool” look with chassis style black furniture. Was FX the first? Or did they copy the style of military firearms?

All that white coloration and crud in the powder burner barrel is oxidation from the Copper. In areas of high humidity the Copper left in a rifle barrel will oxidize and cause pitting in the barrel steel over time. If you're not going to keep your barrel CLEAN. You should at least coat it in oil between outings. This prevents the oxidation from the left over Copper in the barrel.
When you're doing shooting for the day, oil up the barrel and put the rifle away. This blocks the humidity and air from reaching the Copper and steel of the barrel. Next time you're going shooting patch out the barrel or use a bore snake to dry out the barrel before shooting it. Then oil up again and put the gun away when done for the day. This process will protect your barrel steel in between shooting sessions without cleaning. Replace your bore snake once or twice a year and you're good to go. :)

Hi, I have a LW barrel on an AirForce Airguns Talon P. A super accurate rifle (BTW not fitted with a polygonal RB), loads of power, (with accuracy and precision) shooting 21g slugs (H&N), under X4 or greater mag, I see no discernible defects in the bore or a lack of concentricity of the bore. I've never heard of barrels from them which were not straight. Having hole off centre would have zero affect upon the rifling, it might however affect the alignment at the breach of the bore was then not concentric with breech.---which if the 2 diameters were lined up, the bore of course would then be misaligned with the breech centre.
I regularly shoot 50m even with high winds and no problems with this LW barrel. Of course my story is anecdotal just like yours unless either one of us LOl provides some real data, aka big "n numbers" of barrel samples, like for any stats otherwise it is hearsay.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a dig at you, I've been a subber for a long time plus from my other channels too and I know you often present great stats for various videos you produce. Just out of interest though I'll examine closely some slugs and look/measure (I have the correct tools- I might chuck some in the SEM and get some crazy pics LOL).
The second barrel, I think you are referring to "chatter marks" from slight harmonic movement between barrel and cutting tool. I don't know about the fouling issues but I recently tested whether chatter at least way below 250 um could have any affect upon accuracy, of course this is dependent as you know upon other things such as pressure, duration/volume ie velocity etc but all things being equal for regions of less than 2mm or so in area, I was surprised and found no effect, although i was only testing at very short distances of 20m. Again though such a very small region of chatter cf the entire barrel length is probably negligible. What is you experience here?

Great video as usual. However, I have to say, I have several FX STX and STX Superior barrel liners in 25 and 30 cals and they get lead fouled quite noticeably using FX Hybrids, NSA slugs and JSB/FX pellets. Mainly right near the center of the bore's length. You can feel it with the cleaning patch and visually see it with the naked eye. When I notice a sudden drop off in accuracy, I go to the bench and start cleaning them and it is always in the same locations for a particular liner. Once that is removed, the accuracy comes right back. I have always been surprised by this as I have heard you and others mention many times that these FX barrels generally do not foul much, if any. That simply hasn't been my experience.I could understand getting one, or maybe two that do this, but it seems to be the same way with all of mine. All are being used at speeds from 840-980 fps.

That kind of implies to me, that you have a high point at the point of fouling and if these barrels are externally formed, that suggests the barrels have either
      a) Deformed by some odd material/manufacturing process issue like stretch swelling, where the drawn following material behind the compression process Kind of bunches up a little like a wave forming over a bar in the sand.
      or,
      b) There's a change point in the process where the contact pressure is adjusted higher momentarily - a little like the difference in adjustability between a Standard Pneumatic Regulator or an Instrumentation Grade regulator, where the incremental control points could be different by a ratio of 10:1. If the tooling is PLC and Instrumentation controlled that begs questions of pressure sensor resolution rating, system bus comms speed if not on an optical link (i.e. analogue vs digital vs optical) and PLC sub routine variable settings in run time process, which I figure is likely to change for every barrel length of every bore of every barrel type FX make. or even tooling repsonse time to adjustment instructions relative to material properties in process

I have been very surprised with some Artimes/Spa barrels shooting slugs excellent after a good pollish and lead/rifleing ingagement and crown. The sharp edges on the lands needs to be pollish slightly rounder.
My M22 seems to shoot any slug from 23grn to 30grn under a inch at 50m. Have put more than 500 slugs through with out cleaning. (My LW pollygon unchoked had to be cleaned often).

Unfortunately, you can only get a Magnus effect if there is air blowing across a spinning projectile. A crosswind will only blow across a pellet or slug if they are grossly over stable, which is not the case with usual air gun twist rates. If a pellet/slug was grossly over stable, you wouldn't be able to hit anything if there was a crosswind or not. Normally stable pellets/slugs turn to face into the combined airflow made up from the wind and forward velocity. This means the wind does not blow on the side of the pellet/slug, and thus there is no air blowing across the projectile to produce any Magnus effect. All this is basic aeroballistics, but it is a common misconception that a cross wind blows on the side of the pellet/slug.

However in the firearm world when you have a barrel that is not performing properly, if it's getting too dirty too fast, if the accuracy is lacking, or if it's lightly damaged by rust, one of the things we can do is to polish it.

I like watching a mix of AEAC, 68 Whiskey prior to them becoming commercialized (still love em to bits, still watch every video, but they're no longer truly INDEPENDENT) and the SA Lads prior to them setting up Patriot and Element. Still love Matt and Gerhard and Raulf (sorry about the spelling) but I'm wanting and needing unbiased uninfluenced no bullshit facts before I decide to part with anymore hard earned dollars. A handy guide in making your decisions -
What do you want it for?
How far out do you want it to do it?
How many of them are there and how heavy are they?+
What terrain will you most frequently be covering/operating in and from?
(Goes to weight, form factor, materials, ruggedization, slinging options and functional shooting positions, plus how quickly does your target move laterally and length a barrel)
How much residual Kinetic energy must you have at POI to comply with statute and legislative/regulatory and mandated requirements for your targets.
There's just a few to get you going.
      Next step;
Set a Budget - check out the reviews of product at the Price Point - if one or more of your MUST HAVES can't be met - you're going to have to increase the Budget,
(Suggesttion - if this is your first PCP - don't consider SEMI A or FULL A at all) Me, I'd start with an Avenger, work my way though ownership, handling and long term testing, then trade up incrementally until I could get to something like an FX)
      Good luck out there

Isnt the the ART barrel just a polygonol barrel from LW ? And isnt the impact based off the AR-15 platform ? So therefore a copy? The delta wolf is a shower of s#%t ( i have owned one) but i found the only similarity to be that it is also based on the AR-15 platform , i own a .25 M3 and a .25 Daystate Redwolf ,the M3 shoots alot of heavy slugs through a superior liner very well ( not a sup heavy like fx say i should use) and the Redwolf shoots EVERYTHING through its LW poly barrel and is not very fussy at all so can you explain that matt?

    • @AirArmsHuntingSA
      @AirArmsHuntingSA  3 года назад +1

No, the ART is a 5-groove, the Poly is a 6 groove. Totally different designs. The reason I am of the opinion that there is a lot of copying going on is based on my own interactions with people who have been involved with development on both sides. I happen to have my ear to the ground a little more than most people.
I think most people who have owned Poly barrels will tell you they are fussier, but every barrel is different and you may have a really good one that isn’t too fussy - a lot of that has to do with the choke. Hold on to that barrel👌🏻

Is tikka the only one of these brands that hasn't offered free products? The Tikka barrel is full of gunpowder residue and moisture corrosion. Despite this, it runs great and seems to be your favorite hunting rifle at long range? The video was good, but partly incorrect regarding cold forging. The accuracy achieved with it is much higher than in a barrel made with a cnc machine, where the tool is pushed into the barrel dozens of times, each time being exposed to the change in tolerances of the machine and the long, narrow bore.
The only thing where a cold forged barrel is not better is the change in hit point you mentioned with a hot shot gun. It is also not a cheaper way when the investment costs are included. Zx thick barrels do not need massive machines, but Tikka makes 50mm barrel blanks and the force they require is on a completely different scale.
The intention is not to criticize, you make excellent content that I have been following for years, and I have not noticed a mistake before. Keep up your great work on a cause dear to all of us.

The method of rifling is not really relevant because hammer forging, pulled button, push button, cutting and broaching are all methods that can produce rifling in a barrel that can deliver extremely accurate results. What is relevant is the quality of the material and the QC in the manufacturing process that produced the barrel blanks, the quality of the tools and dies used to make the rifling, the QC the during the rifling process, and most importantly the skill and experience of the machinist who is doing the work.
