I can’t even imagine the potency of the sounds and barrage of noise they had to endure. I guess at some point they’d start to get used to the different sounds and start to tune them out, but still it’d be like having your fire alarm going off your entire workday.

Before I got my first dog, I read about soldiers who took dogs with them on trench raids. That sounded crazy to me, because if the dog barked just once at the wrong time, he would attract snipers and tok emma fire. Then, when I finally got one, I would often walk him at night, especially in summer. It was clear he just instinctively knew he needed to be quiet. He never barks when we're in enemy territory, and he rarely barks at night, even when he's at home. If the door opens unexpectedly (because I didn't shut it all the way) he just gets goose bumps and slowly turns to look at the open door with an anxious expression.
He's also the only dog I ever knew who wasn't bothered at all by thunder and lightning. Gus would have made a good war dog, but I'm glad he isn't one.

A great story and well told Brandon! I really learned something from this one!
Troops "feeding and fussing" over the dogs? Well of course, they're Brits! As I understand it an Englishman will kick his grandmother before he'd EVER kick his dog! 🤣
And something like that warning over "feeding and fussing" carries over to our own time, I'm sure we've all seen people out with service dogs wearing vests asking people to not pet or otherwise distract the dog.
Great background, that painting of that artillery position and I was impressed that the artist got the detail of that striped aiming stake out in front of the gun. I don't know how it's done now but aiming stakes were very much in use in the 1970s. Just so everyone knows they don't really "aim" with the aiming stakes, they're really compass reference points.
Good show today! Thanks for posting!

On a tangential note, I very much enjoy seeing dog/animal reenactors at events. It reminds us that while the major component of any given period is the human element, our relationships with animals are inherently tied to this as well. If only my own trio of pups travelled well, I think they’d like the attention of being “reenactors” at least 😂.

I find it interesting that the tone described by soldier to the dogs sense of duty to be simply a reflection of the mind of that soldier. And the times that they lived in. They felt that way, and the humans around them felt that way, and so they see that anywhere the look so to say.
Also mustard is not a gas it is particulate matter that can be breathed and settle onto skin. It makes quite a lot of sense that the dogs fur could form a protective layer from the mustard. However I don't have an answer to why they might not have been breathing it in

All right! Fascinated with both war animals and life and death and death in the trenches so this is great! Hoping for another video on dogs in the Georgian period, too- King Charles spaniels originated from Tudor imports of monastic-turned-palace dogs given between ambassadors, made popular by the Restoration, and in the Georgian period were lapdogs for the aristocracy. Lady can be the host and do the ads
Awwwww. Cutest little grunt. I don't think she'd be willing to be part of the impression.
Saw a link on my FB feed about the Belgian gun mastiffs. New to me! I had no idea that they existed and Chien de Trait Belge went extinct after the wars.
"Tell them about how we're better than radios, Brandon! "
    Game looks great
I was amused by both the animals and soldiers distracting each other. Too cute for their own good.
I immediately assumed heavy casualties- man and horse fell heavily in these battles and even a fast, agile dog will still fall to the sheer amount of fire, not to mention being attacked by enemy soldiers.
    Great idea for a video.
