The key thing to remember is that when you're using allegedly you're stating that someone said that person did that thing, which you aren't claiming as true or false. The problem is that there has to be a source for the original allegations. If the origin of the claim is unreliable, and it's being repeated in a way to lend it credibility, it can still be defamation by implication. If there is no real source for it or you are the source for it, then you're totally hosed.
