I bought the 16 inch spear in 308 shortly after they went live. I have loved 308 for quite some time and wanted to build a " do-all" rifle. I see 5.56 (GPR/SPR) builds being all the rage, but honestly, 5.56 at long range is tricky. It's not super easy to land shots 500 and past ( not impossible by any means) and even then, you start to see poor performance at those ranges ( dependant on round type). I have a video on my channel of an Iraqi soldier taking a round of 5.56 to the bare forehead and it skids off his skull and does not penetrate. Obviously anecdotal but it made me consider a few things. 1. As you mentioned, for the past 20+ years, we have been fighting unarmored, malnourished enemies. This has led to most civilians basing their rifle builds around GWOT style clones. 2. 5.56 has been the main "fighting rifle" cartridge for the US military for quite some time leading most to default to it being "the best" It's definitely a solid round, but I went on a rant a few years ago that battle rifles will make a huge resurgence after the GWOT. The US Army announcing the Spear as the new fighting rifle suggests I am right. The rifle itself is cool and does not feel as heavy in the hands as it is on paper. Also, aesthetically, it is arguably the nicest looking rifle on the market. All of that said, it's nearly 5K price point is absurd. I think I paid $5200 after shipping and taxes on mine. I do not feel I have a 5K rifle though
556 isn't going anywhere. What should be done is upgrade 556 to heavier high bc bullet and will basically be a whole new round at longer ranges. Secondly how the fuck can you afford a 5k rifle 😂😂 especially a shitty one
@@ChrisEdlingyou really can’t, the 5.56 has reached its maximum upgradability. You could probably make a heavier bullet or more efficient in SBRs or even inch out a couple more FPS but really this is it. Also you could do what SIG did but at that point so many changes would have been made that it would necessitate a new rifle.
@@ChrisEdling not really, a 277 fury is completely different bullet than 308. It not only has different measures but also performances. Like narrower bullet going faster, further, with more power and accuracy than the 308, this of course is done by still using the “normal” 277, and not the 6.8x51.

It's really hard to make any meaningful comparisons if you don't have a SPEAR in .277 Fury. What makes the XM7 the XM7 is the 80,000 PSI, hybrid case ammunition. That's going to be the single biggest question mark on the gun, since any other gun with a regular barrel would end up chewing through said barrel in 2,000 rounds. Supposedly, Sig has some magic metal that allows it to last up to 50,000 rounds, but I'm skeptical. Until people can get a SPEAR chambered in .277 and put 1-2k rounds of the full power stuff through it, we're all just spitballing. The SPEAR you have is just another piston 308, of which there are many.

The heavier spring on the folder may be due to the fact that it needs to stay locked closed when mortaring. I have a Spear Lt with a light spring and at one point I had a stuck case. I own a 7.62 Spear rifle. It's heavy and doesn't do anything better than a 7.52 AR. I'm convinced some general retired after awarding contracts to Sig and now works at Sig. The military should stick with the M4 and M16 series of rifles as a general issue rifle. If they want to equip designated soldiers with this rifle, okay, but every infantryman? That's just silly. They are delivering a weapon to fight the last war and ignoring decades of data. Why not just go back to the M14? You get a heavier rifle and less round count.....same as the Spear. As for body armor....I'm sure it won't be long before it's designed and capable of stopping the new round.
Absolutely nobody on RUclips has fired the round meant for this rifle. The only purpose of this rifle is to one shot level 4 body armor at up to 100 meters and one shot level 3 body armor up to 600 meters. Stay away from the civilian rounds and models because they cost too much for the lower performance.
this is too new . . . def wait . . . the newer versions of the XM7 will prob be lighter and even more reliable . . . and if it becomes a mainstay . . . hope that the US army will let other manufacturers make it like they did an M4 . . . so civ mkt can get diff price points 2 . . . also time for the 6.8 / sig fury (the round it was designed for) to become available as the rifle was made for it. Lots of more reliable / accurate options for .308 / 7.62 that way easier on the budget. 4 less rounds things, the army is banking on the new firing solution vortex scope, for rifleman accuracy / everyone can DMR . . . instead of assault style suppression . . . and the SAW guy for suppressive since the mgun version of the XM7 lighter and they can bring it to bear faster . . . only time will tell if the army is right (China just got their intermed / 5.56 style modern rifles) in choosing DMR vs suppressive assault fire . . .

also not saying 5.56 is bad it's a great round and AR-15's are awesome guns, I just think that in a military unit it would make sense to have some guys rocking Spear heavy's and some guys rocking AR-15's or Spear LT's so that you got guys with the hard hitting firepower of .277 fury and guys who have the lighter 5.56, cause why have one when you can have all
Personally I own spear lt 5.56. And my POF Revolution DI 308 weighs less at 6.8 pounds than the spear lt 5.56. I don't get why the revolution from pof is so underrated. In my opinion it's the best factory 308. On the market. They do have a piston version. And the piston version is still alot lighter than the xm7. I got the spear mainly because of the folding stock and it is a premium quality gun. Love it. But for 308 POF. Revolution is where it's at
The POF Revolution has a lot of reliability issues....i bought one in 14.5" piston and no matter what ammo I used I couldn't get thru a full magazine without multiple failures....tried to use it with my YHM Resonator R2 it got even worse....every 2-5 rounds it failed...and with expensive brand new brass, Hornady, Gorilla, PMC, Norma...i sold that unreliable POS at a huge loss last year which is why I just purchased this spear in the 16" version...not perfect but no major widely known reliability issues normal or suppressed on the spear 308
@@tonybailey89 damn that suck brudda. My di revolution just runs and runs. Haven't had one issue. I need to finally clean it after about 1700 rounds
@@morenobeyo I absolutely LOVE my POF P415 Edge 16.5" 556 even reliable when filthy running suppressed with my OCL Polonium. I'd grab that gun if SHTF and it's a sexy machine to boot. Your lucky you got one of the good Revolution guns hang onto it lol
Don't push down on the button, put your thumb on it but pull up on the tube with your fingers.
The folding stock should have a button to push
With the M7 sight system, the M157 Vortex system, giving 80% (EIGHTY FRIKKIN' PERCENT!) hit probability at 700 meters you won't need those extra 70 rounds you'd have in the M4 load out. Optical ights are important. In the after action reports of the battle of Fallujah some reporters felt US troops were "executing the enemy. Au contraire' mon free. The Army and Marines were using the 3X ACOG sight and were face shooting the fuckers. Those sight were just what good in combat. Imagine how much better the M157 will be. Zombies and "near peers" should be VERY afraid.
The next major war is far more likely to be in an urban setting. That long range capability won’t mean 💩 for the average grunt. It will likely end up like the M14 in Vietnam, retired immediately for a shorter lighter system.
Are your stats apples to apples 16”-16”? Or was that for the 13” 308 to 16” 556?
They were for a 13" .308 and a a 12.5" 5.56.
Just get the 277 barrel. They are modular. Then you have both.
Was this tested in freezing temperatures ?
All weapons are torture tested.
Eventually unless things drastically change, bullets will be obsolete in the next 20 years. The arrow has been used in combat for one thousand years, then armor got good, then people moved to the musket and so on,but with level 4 armor bullets are obsolete.
Doesn’t matter if you’re 70rds short if you’re a robot and you don’t miss 👀
I saw Bigfoot throw that rock that hit you! lol
Haha that's the thing about bigfoot, you never see him coming!
@@herringtonarms , Trust me ... I know! Ernie Brown, A.K.A. The Turtleman knows firsthand what that's like, getting hit with rocks! lol. He never knew what I saw appeared behind him in those woods with him that day , until a year later when I decided to tell him about what all was going on just right in behind his back, what I'd seen appear suddenly, like a scene in the movie Predator, all these beings cloaked wearing garments of light, like the Council of the Holy... He was genuinely shocked and surprised and the "Live Action " became a look of surprised terror, after he'd exclaimed: WHAT? YOU NEVER TOLD ME THIS BEFORE!
I just did 500 rounds with my sig spear mcx with no issues I like it
backwards. Fighting drones with a 13lb rifle. I'll take the the spear light.
SOCOM is adopting the Spear-LT
they arent fighting drones in the first place thats what phalanxes and other anti air weapons are for
the chance of getting into a firefight as a civilian is slim to none?? I'd say you better make sure it's none
41,000 people die in the U.S. each year from second hand smoke which is over twice the firearm murder rate and I don't see survivalists wearing gas masks. Some of those survivalists even smoke.
The military isn't using the .308 version...277 Fury
Indeed, they are using the 6.8x51
@@herringtonarms In this case, it's about the casing and not the bullet. There is nothing special about the bullet. It's all about the casing.
@@orlock20that sounds a bit simplistic. The military started with a caliber that had their desired performance. They then let competitors design the casing and gun around that.
Price point is unrealistic.
If I had mega money, Sig Spear LT in 6mm Arc...
Naw sigs are gay af
a home defense gun??? what are you talking about, who the heck needs that? you getting ambushed over there or what
😂. I can see it being a SHTF rifle but definitely not a home defense gun lol. Way too big and heavy, the 308 would over penetrate like crazy and it’s way too loud lol. If you didn’t have ears on or a suppressor you’d blow your ear drums inside a room lol. Personally I don’t grab a rifle as my home defense gun (I have a Staccato P with prob more attachments than I need) that serves perfectly as a home defense gun
They are not worried about peer military body armor its because regular Americans with top grade body armor are considered the next generation threat
What are they preparing for, starts with a W and ends with a 3.
xm7 is built to fight mars bugs not some commies on earth .
So much gas in the face. Hopefully the 6.8x51 has less of that.
The M4 in 6.8 SPC II or 6.5 Grendel, if you need a change. If external piston was needed. Those cartridges in the Spear LT would be the way to go. The Spear has forgotten the lessons of the past. Defeating Body armor is not the only consideration. Laying down fire Suppression is key within 300 meters or less. The spear will run out of ammo fast, not to mention follow up is slow.

All facts!
The marines got rid of their squad machine guns. Volume suppression fire seems to be old doctrine now.
@@mecampbell30 All rifles engage in fire suppression (I never said anything about volume or area suppression). It's called fire and maneuver. Machine guns are nice to have but are not required for this. A fire team or squad lays down fire while other fire teams or squads maneuver into position to close in and engage the enemy. The Doctrine is old (not obsolete) and still in use to this day. You need more ammo and fast follow ups for this to work. This will never change. Because it is the only way to gain and hold ground. Stop being a deluded fanboy. The US Army made the AR-15 America's gun .. and know all the pros & cons of the 556 & 7.62.
The NGSW ... is about replacing .... the 556 & 762 ... with a 6.8 mm round .. that can be used in the service rifle, LMG, GPMG & DMR.
The M4 & M249 ... can be modified ... for 7.62 Nato, 6.5 CM or ... 6.8 "Common Catridge"
But the M240 is in 7.62 Nato and can be modified to 6.8 CC with a barrel & bolt swap ... and the M110 can be replaced by a DMR M7.
@@abelincoln8885 Opinions do vary. Naming calling devalues any stated position. Moving on... 😎
Sig 716 is jamming in operation when used by Indian Army. They bought around 79000 rifles and cancelled the follow up order after this became a big problem by Indian army soldiers. Now they are developing a rifle using Russian technology.
Big facts
Absolutely nobody on RUclips has fired the round meant for this rifle. The only purpose of this rifle is to one shot level 4 body armor at up to 100 meters and one shot level 3 body armor up to 600 meters.
Stay away from the civilian rounds and models because they cost too much for the lower performance.
Bullets are going the way of the arrow.
I’ll take the ACR instead.
this is too new . . . def wait . . . the newer versions of the XM7 will prob be lighter and even more reliable . . . and if it becomes a mainstay . . . hope that the US army will let other manufacturers make it like they did an M4 . . . so civ mkt can get diff price points 2 . . . also time for the 6.8 / sig fury (the round it was designed for) to become available as the rifle was made for it. Lots of more reliable / accurate options for .308 / 7.62 that way easier on the budget.
4 less rounds things, the army is banking on the new firing solution vortex scope, for rifleman accuracy / everyone can DMR . . . instead of assault style suppression . . . and the SAW guy for suppressive since the mgun version of the XM7 lighter and they can bring it to bear faster . . . only time will tell if the army is right (China just got their intermed / 5.56 style modern rifles) in choosing DMR vs suppressive assault fire . . .
It's just an ar10 that uses an ar18 system 🤣
Just 3D print the body of the gun with a composite material
7 mags of 25 rounds vs 7 mags of 30 rounds is a 35 round difference not 70
I misspoke, the military issues the 20rd mags not the 25.
@@herringtonarms ah bet. That makes sense.
I wonder why the military decided to do 20rd mags instead of 25.
You are using the wrong rounds with the gun
It seems like he is a short range shooter with that rifle so it's fine. If he is shooting .308 at 500 meters, this is not the rifle for that round.
This man cannot be taken seriously he drives a Toyota Communist from the far East!!! Lol
Other than Collectors .. there's no need for civilians to get a Sig Spear Heavy in 308 ... let alone 277 Fury.
The 6.8 x 51 ... was designed for the US Army .... to be "common caliber" ... for the service rifle, light MG, GPMG & DMR .. for close combat forces.
The Army is replacing the 5.56 & 7.62 ... with the 6.8 CC. Returning to the Battle Rifle was inevitable ... because the M4 & M249 ... can not be easily converted to 7.62 Nato or 6.8 CC. But the M240 & M110 are in 7.62 Nato ... and the M240 can be converted to 6.8 CC with a barrel a bolt swap ... and the XM7 with a longer barrel, better trigger & stock, and with a longer handguard with bipod can replace the M110.
And the 6.8 CC ... comes as a full brass General Purpose round & the high pressure Steel head hybrind round.
See. The 6.8 x 51 was made specifically for the needs of future Close Combat Forces ... not civilians 5.56 fanboys. The Sig Spear Heavy ... is simply Sig's rifle design ... for the 308, 6.5 CM & 6.8 CC ... and the latest evolution of the MCX. You can get much cheaper & better 308 rifles.
Need to see what FN, H&K, LMT, IWI, KAC, Desert Tech etc designs for the 6.8 CC.
277 fury would be amazing for pretty much everything for civs though the extra velocity can help with multiple tasks
@@Josh5.56x45 There is no way civilians will get the military version of this rifle or at least the cartridge.
