It would save them millions of dollars making a brand new fiom, make them more money from all the people who want to see it again on the big screen, and introduce a new generation to their older catalog of films. Yes, very progressive, putting a woman who is half white as the first non-white Disney princess ever depicted. I'm sure there were absolutely no talented indian actresses with brown skin (matching the original Jasmine) who would have been amazing in this role. It's fine. This is fine.
I hate the trend of making live-action adaptions for classic animated movies. The point of animation is to create a more flexible form of fiction that exceeds the limitations of real life. Certain things don’t translate well into live-action _because it’s not supposed to._ Animated fiction is easily more charming than live-action and should be left alone as their own finished products instead of being blueprints for a future live-action movie. 🤦🏽♀️
@StrawberryCola, you do realize that Disney is making these live action movies, because the copyright on their old movies is about to expire, right? It's not done out of greed like 99.9 percent of the internet believes.
Justin Stewart If that’s true then sure, but I still hate it. It goes for anything outside of Disney as well. The unfortunate thing is most of their popular animated movies would be awkward to adapt into live-action. Either that, or they’re terrible at being able to pull it off seamlessly while recapturing what made the source material good.
They tried so hard to make jasmine empowered but somehow she never managed to do anything. She just mopes around for most of the movie and when she finally gets her big power ballad moment jafar is just like fuck you and stops her immediately. The original character had so much attitude and personality.
It's funny how movies are more feminist when they don't try to specifically make it feminist. Mulan, Belle, Jasmine, Nala; all of these female characters were perfectly capable and had at least some degree of autonomy in their original movies. Then in the 2010s Disney forced their own souless, corporate 'yass queen slay' feminism into characters and reducing them to a single archetype when these four characters had wildly different, distinct personalities before. The irony of corporate feminism, not to be confused with genuine feminism, is that female characters end up having less scope, they can't have any weaknesses because they've gotta be strong and independent at all times. Yeah what a great message for young children. You're not a real woman unless you're an asshole to everyone for no reason and can curb stomp any enemy that comes towards you with ease. I'm sick of it.
@@goingunder2548 the corporate soullessness of Disney has basically ensured that they can never produce anything truly subversive or boundary pushing. case in point every 'canonical gay character' that has 5 seconds of screen time. they don't actually care but they'll insert the most banal watered down progressive take if it makes them a few extra bucks
Honestly, the biggest problem I have with this film comes down to how they changed the characters to try and make them more ‘fleshed out’, when it really didn’t fit the plot. Jasmine now wanting to be the Sultan over her original desire to just be free from the restraints of the palace now makes her relationship with Aladdin just an afterthought. In the original, they both talked about how they felt trapped, and the connection they share over their mutuality. It was beautiful, because you saw how being rich didn’t make Jasmine any more happy than Aladdin. There’s no real reason for her and him to fall in love in this movie outside of ‘because that’s what the story is about’. It also takes away from a Whole New World. The whole reason this scene is great is because Aladdin essentially gives Jasmine what she wants. A chance to see the world, and experience what she never could. It’s what made him different than the other suitors, who could only offer her what she already had. Again, this film is more concerned with making Jasmine’s motivations about being sultan, so this scene comes off as utterly pointless. Or, hell, even the scene that led to them meeting in the first place doesn’t work. Jasmine gives a boy an apple from a cart and doesn’t know you have to pay for them. In the original movie, this was understandable since she had never left the castle walls before, so it made sense. Here, you’re telling me she’s snuck out of the palace before, AND claims to know/care about Agrabah’s people than anyone else, yet she doesn’t know basic things about how their system works? How is she qualified to be Sultan, again? Or Jafar. In the original, he was a twisted man that was well-trusted in the palace by everyone. But here, he’s an insecure little bitch that isn’t intimidating in the least. The head of the guard doesn’t trust him, the Sultan barely seems to trust him, and Aladdin as Prince Ali knows Jafar was the one that betrayed him, yet they do nothing and allow him to be in such a high position of leadership in the palace. None of the guards questioned Jafar ordering them to kill Prince Ali, yet they supposedly already know he’s not exactly trustworthy. In the original, them just blindly following his orders made sense. They had no reason to be suspicious of him. It made him so much more mysterious and vicious, whereas now he’s just some insecure guy that no one trusts anyway. It makes everyone in the palace seem stupid. And lastly, Aladdin. The movie spends so much more time trying and failing to flesh out other characters like Jasmine’s handmaiden or the royal guard that they forget to give the protagonist of the film any character. If anything, they instead take away from what they had on him. Him stealing bread in the beginning, for example, was important because he only steals the bare essentials. We see he only does it to survive, which also shows us, based on the guards’ reactions, that the very law that’s supposed to be protecting them is strict and more harmful than helpful. In this film, however, they’re way more justified, since he’s stealing possessions, rather than necessities. So he goes from being a clever and likeable street rat that just wants to survive, to a bland thief that the movie keeps insisting has more to him. They throw the entire point of the movie, that the only differences between Aladdin and Jasmine is essentially just a flawed class system, away for the sake of elements that don’t even end up servicing the movie well. Those are my two cents, at least.
I thought it was pretty cringy that he has that whole song about why he steals and then immediately is like "Oh yeah, that lute is.. borrowed" Like come on...
I'm so, dare I say, triggered, by how incredibly fake it looks… The sets and the costumes.... they don't transport you to another world but remind you that in fact they are sets and costumes. Look at Raiders of the Lost Ark (an example of a Middle Eastern location) it looks lived in and real. Look at the costumes for Lord of The Rings, incredible. This looks gaudy and plastic!
"Stop making everything dark, Disney!" Jesus, am I glad somebody finally said it. EDIT: I should clarify that I was mostly referring to how gritty and edgy Disney movies are, not just the dark lighting. I mean, who would want a dark and edgy Hot Topic wannabe Lion King over the colorful, friendly looking one? It seems that everybody does, and that annoys me.
There's probably a practical reason for this, CGI artists say that well lit scenes are harder to work with than dim ones so Disney is probably saving a ton of money on effects by making their entire movies dark.
I Absolutely adore dark disney movies such as Hunchback of Notre Dame and such but yea taking the lively old movies like lion king and making em all serious is a huge nope for me.

there was some stage show that was meant to be aladdin in base concept but like there were warring kingdoms based on Disney vs Pixar, and from what my husband tells me it's *very* entertaining!
The reason everything has to be dark is because that's what people think "real" looks like for some reason. Somehow tv/film have convinced people that the real world looks super dark and grey and gritty... Which is false. The world is vibrant. Even grey days are pretty vibrant compared to these movies. The other reason these movies are so dark is in order to make all the CG look better. CG needs to be hidden or obscured using lighting techniques because our eyes are really good at picking up wonky looking stuff. The worst part is is, it takes away from all the interesting color palettes and energetic animation which is a large reason these movies appeal in general. A lot of people think the lion king will be good because it is all CG but I promise everyone, it will look dark and grey and kinda bland just like the trailer for the movie look.
I would have thought is was being used to washout the lackluster CG. I've noticed for a lot of older games of mine that haven't aged as gracefully on modern TV's, reeling in the brightness setting can wash out rough edges and keep things from looking too flat. So in theory, you can use the same cheap technique applies here.
"I can show-you-the-world, shining, shim-mer-ing, splendid..." The arhythmic way in which the actor portraying Aladdin sang the phrase "show you the world" and the word "shimmering" makes it pretty obvious that this actor has no musical training and no sense of rhythm. In the recording studio while dubbing the vocals, I'm pretty sure the only direction given to him was to listen for the individual beats in each measure because the actor probably can't read music. And then they probably just synced his voice to each measure's downbeat and played around with editing each syllable and autotuning every note just to make it sound remotely presentable. Because this issue wasn't nearly as prevalent in the original, it's pretty obvious Disney just phoned it in this time around. You fail, F minus minus, see me after class. I forgot to include mommy as a character! Errrrm... JASMINE HAS A SERVANT AND SHE IS ALSO IN LOVE WITH THE GENIE!”
Kirsten Großmann Oh, not much. At the beginning of the movie, it shows a family sailing a boat, the merchant (also Will) says he'll tell the story of this boat to his children. (Cue to Arabian Nights) Jasmine has a head mistress that tends to her needs and Is also her best friend. The Genie hangs around In his human form (regular Smith) as Ali's servant/right hand. Was personally not a fan of the "girl power" narrative being shoved down my throat, especially using my favorite Disney Princess. Jasmine was already a strong, confident female character. We didn't need two forgettable songs to remind us of that! And when it comes to canon Jasmine, we can already assume she'll be ruling in her father's stead. I can't figure out why Disney doesn't just re-release these movies in the theaters. It would save them millions of dollars making a brand new fiom, make them more money from all the people who want to see it again on the big screen, and introduce a new generation to their older catalog of films. Everyone wins.
Not nessisarally, Disney would re-release their animated films into theaters again and then take their movies out of the Disney vault, but they started making less money than they were hoping, so they kinda eventually stopped re-releasing them
@Mario Nah but it is about making money... and if they legit did competent 'remasters' of the originals and released them into theatres with merch or whatever I would probably see them. As it stands, Beauty and the Beast was the last 'live action' remake I saw in the theatre and I won't be giving Disney my money again if I can help it.

What with ai upscaling they could give good reason to re-release the films in theater, and people would have reason to watch
@@flyingsky1559 The films are on celluloid (that's why they're called "films"), not digital files, so there's no need to do any upscaling. If they want to get more digital resolution they can simply rescan the films at a higher resolution. Practically speaking they could use so much magnification that the individual film grains are visible in the scan. After that they can apply conventional DSP algorithms to denoise the scans.
I suspect it’s to prevent their copyright from lapsing, and re-releasing the original isn’t enough.

@@Stew91 copyright? But dont they own it?
@@Yoshikage8008 Copyright can expire after years.

Jesus, am I glad somebody finally said it.
Yeah sorry about that, we had to render it darker because the light made our models look even worse😂
There's probably a practical reason for this, CGI artists say that well lit scenes are harder to work with than dim ones so Disney is probably saving a ton of money on effects by making their entire movies dark.
That really just reinforces the point that this movie is yet another lazy Disney cashgrab.
And I thought the DCEU was too dark.

there was some stage show that was meant to be aladdin in base concept but like there were warring kingdoms based on Disney vs Pixar, and from what my husband tells me it's *very* entertaining!

"I can show-you-the-world, shining, shim-mer-ing, splendid..."
The arhythmic way in which the actor portraying Aladdin sang the phrase "show you the world" and the word "shimmering" makes it pretty obvious that this actor has no musical training and no sense of rhythm.

Sardonicast quote, nice. I think movies should be made with quite a lot of care an creativity

holy shit i haven't seen YMS this angry for a long time
"This is just going to get dated really quickly. The 2D animation still holds up and this film will not!" *THANK YOU.* I was just thinking about this in relation to the first Toy Story. It's still a great movie, but those graphics are WAY dated now. That's why hand-drawn animation has a sort of timeless charm that pure CGI will likely never match: The more human effort you put into a piece of art, the longer a shelf life it has.
As soon as they started singing "a whole new world" I left to go pee and as soon as I got back that scene ended
So you missed the worst of it, then
I feel like the song violated my ears so you really didn't miss out on anything.
The "Prince Ali" number was so underwhelming, I was crushed.
@@blaisetelfer8499 i know right? The movie had *ZERO* spectacle. Why didn't they go all out on the musical numbers? A crappy Bollywood movie has better musical theatrics than this
I saw someone get up at the same time and return at the end of the scene. My exact thought was, "They didn't miss anything."
movie length 128 minutes, review length 8 minutes
Adum, u just saved 2 hours of my life. A sincere, heartfelt thank you.
I haven't seen the original Alladin movie, but the live action one really isn't that bad as it's made out to be. This dude is just blinded by his nostalgia goggles.
@@stanpines9011 If you've seen the original then you would know that they just recycled an entire movie but put less effort into it. Of course if you haven't seen the original that won't bother you.

I haven't read your comment, but your wrong and stupid
Spicy ‘pinions is what I subbed for and I am not disappointed.
I'm surprised Adam didn’t mentioned the horrible fact that the Genie has a ROMANTIC INTEREST In the movie!
Seriously, not only the character was awful, but the romance was forced as hell.
At least it makes my headcanon plausible, that the merchant at the beginning was making his fanfiction as he was telling it to his children and was like “Oh shit! I forgot to include mommy as a character! Errrrm... JASMINE HAS A SERVANT AND SHE IS ALSO IN LOVE WITH THE GENIE!”
Did they even watch the show?
Holy shit what?! Tell me more
@dumbass bitch Unfortunately Disney will not do that to a good guy for a long time, because they get too much money from China/Russia.
Kirsten Großmann Oh, not much.
At the beginning of the movie, it shows a family sailing a boat, the merchant (also Will) says he'll tell the story of this boat to his children. (Cue to Arabian Nights)
Jasmine has a head mistress that tends to her needs and Is also her best friend.
The Genie hangs around In his human form (regular Smith) as Ali's servant/right hand.
Alongside the initial spark, Aladdin asks the Genie to “distract” the mistress to allow Al to break into Jasmine's room and start “A Whole New World” as the Genie and Mistress go for a walk togheter.
@dumbass bitch Disney would never do that. If they did then they couldn't market it to China.
This review is perfection to my ears!
6:27 this aged incredibly well
Besides, you cannot, you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT replace Robin Williams.
Unless it's with Willy "Will" Smith
Luke S. That’s where you’re wrong, kiddo
It would've been hilarious if after that end rant, he gave it a 10/10.
Ladondorf Then it would have taken three different letters to do that.
1/10. oh YIKES. been a while since one of those
Actually MA got that rating like a week ago.
Holly would if she could, and she will it was all good just a week ago
Saw this with my wife, everything he said was exactly what I thought, eerily so. I was angry watching it, they had a perfectly good template and they removed parts that were good for parts that were bad, and made it longer. Horrible.
"It's closer to a 0 than a 2.
You should review older movies that you like or people consider classics in quickie format.
ps I do realize sardonicast is a thing
He's doing lists for that. Next one's already in the making (2007 i think).
I wish I didn't realize Sardonicast was a thing. Ralph is fucking insufferable.
4:35 This 10 seconds clip is more entertaining and visually impressive than the entire live-action movie. The fluidity and quality of the animation is frankly breathtaking.
We didn't need to be hit over the head with that at the very end!
I'm with you, the only thing I liked about this film was the charismatic Will Smith that we truly hadn't seen in over 17 years!
*notification*
Adum is about to end this man’s whole career
Except not, because there is no penalty for failure in Hollywood anymore
If you're talking about Guy Ritchie -- fingers crossed.
They’re making a ton of money on this film. Everyone who made it will be rewarded, not punished.
@@floraposteschild4184 guy ritchie made very british crime flicks. there's no way getting credited for aladdin's gonna do any harm to his career
@@louschwick7301 There's also King Arthur -- remember that fat recent turkey? I don't care for his broey Sherlock Holmes films, but I guess some people do -- #3's in the pipeline. As long as he sticks to things like that and his very british crime flicks, fine.
Finally the nihilistic opinion I needed to hear. I'm so full of my friends and youtubers saying this movie is "great" and "not terrible".
You need new friends and youtubers
Not a single word he stated was nihilistic in any way.
Yet another ignorant edgy fuck trying to sound smart to get some sweet internet points, smh.
needed or wanted?
Stop dragging my philosophy through the mud to sound cool.
Adum gave Suicide Squad a 2/10. That's saying a lot.
If he thinks this was the worst film of 2019, I seriously can't wait for him to see "The Secret Life Of Pets 2".
Pets 2 was just awful. I got way more out of the Aladdin remake than that movie (no seriously, Aladdin 2019 was MUCH better.....)
EDIT: You're better off watching real pet videos than this movie. Far more entertaining if you ask me.....
On a technical level, yes Pets 2 is definitely worse.
But there's not a chance he'll be as *angry* about Pets 2 as he was about this.
And I can't blame him for that.
I mean, it's made by the same people who made by Despicable Me. If someone's expecting anything different then that's kinda their own fault.
Ugh. My brother went to see it and he loved it. My mom who was with him told me it sucked haaard
I can't imagine him bothering to watch that trash
I literally only enjoyed Will Smith. He really felt like the only one trying and I appreciated that sksknxn
Hot take for everyone watching (or playing) ANY remake "because of nostalgia":
You can't experience "nostalgia" over something that literally just came out. Like-- to even DELUDE yourself into thinking that one of these remakes could ever be on par with the originals just shows how little you ACTUALLY care about the original's impact on your childhood.
Thank you Adam, for thoroughly calling this shit out.
Thank you for watching these movies so we don't have to.
The hero we need but don't deserve.
Wait that sounds like the Nostalgia critic
@@adamtaurusragnathebloodedg8407 Sunset: This idiot thinks that Aladdin is a peice of garbage. We've watched it and we loved it. This idiot need to get his head out of his butt.
