THAT WAS EASILY ONE OF MY FAVORITE LINES OF THIS MOVIE AS WELL AS SOMEBODY BETTER GET READY TO KISS THE DONKEY MY GOD THOSE WERE 2 HILARIOUS LINES IN/OF THIS MOVIE 🤣👍👍..!!
As shit as this movie may be, this is without question one of the most badass scenes in movie history. They just don't make battlewagons like Big Mo anymore
I know it's just fantasy but it brings a tear to my eye. Old dude at 0:23 reminds me of my grandfather. Toughest old bastard I ever knew. I imagine today's military is much the same way. I salute all you veterans past and present.
"sir are we really firing on ohau looks that way" "holy shit" that had to have been one of the best lines from this entire movie 😂 that and "get ready to kiss the donkey" those had to have ben the best lines ftom this entire movie
Not only is this the best scenes of that excuse for a movie, but the best part of them is the sailor pushing away the toy machine, in effect saying "take your cheaply fabricated travesty imitations of this ship away!".
My grandfather served in Pearl Harbor during WI I and this scene gave me chills, and tears, because given the chance he'd totally be on board! And for everyone wasting time saying "this scene is impossible because blah blah blah", it's a movie. And the Navy also told my grandfather it'd be near impossible to rebuild the aircraft and ships damaged in the attacks....and he spent the rest of his service proving them wrong :) So shut it and let me enjoy this clip! lol :p
Even though the Missouri and similar Battleships are obsolete and likely would be quickly destroyed by a modern cruiser, there is just something so... Damned satisfying seeing the long guns and the raw firepower of a ship like this. Mad Respect..o_o7 I was very very very impressed by the ship back in 2011 when I saw it.
The Iowas were refit to counter to Soviet Kirov missile cruisers, so I'm fairly sure they could still hold their own in a fight, as they have modern weapons to go along with the big guns. The issue was that yes, the big guns were only useful for shore bombardment, and they cost way too much to maintain.
In the novelization there's a great scene where after the forcefield goes down Admiral Shane tells the Joint Chiefs (or whatever they were) that he guesses someone must've rallied and fought back successfully and he congratulates Stone, believing him to be the one that did it.
it might not be as cool as the movie, but as a teenager some friends and I ran aground in the old fishing village, and had no way home, so we pulled out an old trot boat and put her to sea. that old tractor engine still purred. slow but steady we got home. sometime those old boats are just as good as the new ones.
My Dad was actually on the receiving end of Mighty Mo's guns on an island in the Pacific. He was with the 3rd Marine Division when an errant order was made to fire on land. They saw the ship come into view and saw the flash of the guns. My Dad and his buddy dove under a caterpiller that was sitting there they were using to try and fix and airfield. He said the ground was shaking so bad he could see daylight under the tracks of the big Cat. The longest 20 seconds of his life until they got the Mo to stop shooting. He had no idea how many friendly casualties, the Marine Corp didn't like to share info like that. Impressive ship, even all these years later and obsolete. Imagine what it was like for the poor Japanese soldiers who were shelled continually day and night by the Missouri, the Iowa and others.
Uldis Blumbergs Oahu is the island they're stationed at - he's confirming that they're actually supposed to be firing some of the biggest guns ever created at their own territory. :)
Apparently so did the British in very limited numbers (BL 18" Mk1), which were 3mm smaller than the biggest Japanese guns but fired a heavier shell - at least, so says Wikipedia. ;) I would stand by "some of the biggest guns". Of the 5 naval guns listed which were of larger calibre, two were a quarter inch or less larger, and three were produced in very low numbers (four if you count 40 guns as low). Having looked up more, though, perhaps I should amend to "biggest naval guns". Mallett's Mortar and Little David dwarf both of them at 914mm vs 460mm for those Japanese guns!
In the novelization when the Missouri leaves Hopper makes a speech over the intercom to the crew saying that the Missouri ended one war and will now hopefully end another. He also quotes what his brother would always tell his crew. They also play Anchors Aweigh and Hopper asks Nagata to teach it to him in Japanese but Nagata refuses as he knows Hopper will butcher it and is afraid he'll some day do it in front of one of Nagata's bosses.
Years ago I knew a guy named Steve, one day he pulls out his wallet and wants to show me pictures. I figured a hot rod, his family, kids....no....a dozen pictures of WW ll Battleships. He was in love with them. 35 years later, I'm starting to understand !
Its how brutally beautiful they were designed. Nothing fragile about them. There were no weakspots, if they took a shell somewhere they kept going. They are the ultimate statement of "i am a solid hunk of metal that you dont mess with" Modern ships are designed more for efficiency, down to the individual bolt. If they take a hit in the right spot, or in the right way, they crumple like a spoiled kid not getting candy in the supermarket.
THE best scene of the whole movie! Instead of aliens it should have been this crew versus some terrorists that used EMP to shut down the modern electronics. No convoluted plot, just big ships blowing the shit out if each other.
Aw yeah, let the Black Dragon and Ol' WisKY get their own shots in. That would be amazing! Hell, they're on the East Coast, bring in Showboat and 'Bama too.
I like when he said that's a museum man you gotta love the United States military from any generation those old boys deserve all our respect I know this is a movie though I like how those old veterans got this Battleship ready for a fight
These things were steel giants. The power behind them is just so amazing. And the Missouri was 1 of 3 sisters. The Iowa and New Jersey were the other two BB's just like her. 9 16" barrels of hell. Not even the Yamato or Musashi would've stood a chance against these beasts. And apparently not even an alien spacecraft can stand a chance either. You don't mess with the US Navy and come out alive.
I thought they overstated the age of the old salts a bit. They made it look like it was brought back to life by WW2 vets. Apparently the film makers were unaware that the Iowas were last in service in 1992. Thus any Missouri crewman who was under 30 during her last year of service (which is probably most of the enlisted crewmen and a considerable portion of the officers) would still have been under 50 in 2012 when the movie was made. Hell, the youngest crewmen from 1992 would only be 38, and a 38yo who looks young for his age could easily look like he's in his 20s. But... for some reason they made the former crew all look like a bunch of 80 year olds.
+DarqeDestroyer It was to emphasize the "bringing the old warriors back" theme. But what you mention also means that if the Iowa-class battleships are ever reactivated for real, there will be no shortage of qualified people to man them. There were lots of volunteers who asked to be stationed again aboard the Iowa-class battleships when they were used in the First Gulf War.
pensar no es el mejor acorazado pero ver al missuri en vivo cuando fui a estados unidos y ver despues dos años despues esta peli llore porque me emociono ver como seria ver a los veteranos dando una vuelta mas en ese gran botecito
The scary bit is that during the Cold War, because anything that *_could_* be nuclear was... The 16" guns got a nuclear shell, the W23 (derived from an Army artillery nuclear shell), that was about 15-20 kilotons in yield - on par with a small tactical nuke. In case you thought that the 16" shell wasn't enough of an angry fist of god to begin with...
You know the novelization gives more background on the character of Hopper: at one point Nagata asks him why he acts as he does when he's clearly as good a man as Stone if not better. Hopper tells him that when they were kids he was the better of the two brothers at everything and was an ass about it. One day he nearly died but Stone saved him. He realized Stone was the better man and thus let him keep the spotlight. Nagata (who says his mother is a psychiatrist) suggests that the resentment from doing that caused Hopper to become self-destructive.
No matter how much we advance in technology, they do not make "ass kicking" ships like this anymore. :D
