I am 14 and this film has shaped many accepts of my life, it influenced many part of my life where now I have joined a theater. I am watching this again and realizing that this was made in 1973 and it was way ahead of its time. They used so many different people of different backgrounds and it amazing on how different it is from other movies from that time. This is such an amazing musical.
In 1973 I was an 8-year-old altar boy having my catholicism shoved down my throat when my cousin took me to see Godspell. The experience allowed me to understand that the message is infinitely more important than ANY hierarchal organizational structure that seeks to dictate how its members should practice their faith in that message.
I love your comment! I went to a small church in Pgh when I was in my early 20s, a fellow worshipper was college friends with the guy who wrote Godspell, it’s inspired me my whole life,,, I’ve introduced it to my grandkids and especially the nine year old boy loves it!
This was such a fun show. Senior year of high school 1974, our choir and band put on a mini Godspell. We had the best time, it was a wonderful bonding experience, plus such great music and beautiful message! A lovely memory forever.
Loved this musical from the first time I saw it. Blows Jesus Christ Superstar out of the water. Filming in a deserted New York was a masterstroke. Such a dedicated and talented cast of players.
I'm hoping that they explain, in one of the later 'making of' videos, how they managed to get that deserted look. I'd have thought that even back in the early 70s that NY was a 24 hour city. I know that they may have been able to clear a tiny part for a short time but it's impressive just how empty looking it is.
Watching this film brought me to Christ and the Lord about 10 years ago. It was the beginning of long journey , which I am still on. From where I was when i saw this i can say it saved my life ..
@@kathrynfauble9053 you miss the point. This is how it spoke to Elmo. Whatever else is not of any relevance to his point. Personally, I’m glad he found something profound in it.
This film was awesome. The 7th and 8th graders at St.Pius X in Greensboro went to see it at the Janus theatre and it really caught the kids on fire on thinking about the life of Jesus in a modern context and to see their own lives as a continuing telling of the Gospel.
Robin Lamont has continuously inspired me on so many levels, both in good and bad times. Never got the opportunity to meet, but that's good; I'm simply grateful that our paths crossed.
I thought I must be the only goth/punker catholic heathen who grew up in a family of witches that adores this movie and soundtrack. Does not matter what your belief system is, this play/movie/musical is totally awesome. I know so many "alternative religiony" people who love this.
As I recall, this show got it's start at Berea Summer Theatre at BW! At my age, I'm not sure of the facts, but I loved this show from the first time I saw it! It was a big hit with me and my seminarian friends, and, as a seminarian, I got to include some of the songs in a liturgy. Did not go over well with the "hierarchy"! Also tried at times to include songs from "Superstar" and "Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", also not appreciated! It was a relief for all of us when I decided to part ways from the hierarchy! But really, "Godspell" has so much from "scriptures"!
I just finished watching the 40th(?) anniversary release of Godspell on DVD, and this is the type of documentary I was hoping they would put on the DVD.
It's 2024. I hadn't seen Godspell since a teenager. I wanted to share my experience of something different today with my adult child . They watched the trailer & said that they wouldn't watch the movie & neither would their friends. Despite telling me expecting me to watch a modern asian off the wall movie. Many young adults today are so close minded. Its their way or the highway. They are essentially shooting themselves in the foot & don't even know it.
There is Godspell, an Jesus Christ super star by Andrew LLoyd Webber an Timothy Rice, an in present-day 10 commandments by PascaL Opisbo from France an some other singing movies he made about Jeaus, Praise Jesus. !!!!!
Hmmmm...Sadly, I see more of an unkempt, "lack of bathing look"...these days. No stupid looking, silly *permanent* tattoos, overdone body piercings and pants that..."don't" fit.
@Robin Well, yes, I *do* identify myself as a "Christian". First of all, my comment pertained to what...I am seeing *today*; My point: I see(smell)more "hygiene issues" today than I did back in the 1970s, a s a good chunk of the 70s featured many folk where, well...bathing/hygiene seemed...secondary(if it even existed). It's *worse* these days. The general populace IS...overweight, out if shape...whining because they "can't keep up" & paying exorbitant rates on insurance, when...a little more discipline could go a looong way. Perhaps ..you don't see this. I...do.
@Robin ...and...ypu didn't have the multitudes if options back then that you do today(ie: deodorant, personal grooming devices, soap, at an.). Jesus...did not have these options, nor did anyone else.
@Robin lighten up. Fishing for shortcomings in Christians these days is cliched and boring. No creativity at all. If you hate Christians from your experiences, I’m sorry to hear that. We are all flawed as the next person. Thank goodness for Grace, because we are totally fucked otherwise. And yes I’m a Christian who swears to make a point. 👍🏾🤷🏾♂️
This is just all around a fantastic musical and while i still am an atheist and neither this nor JCS will ever change my stance on that. What it did do was change my viewpoint on Jesus and that allegedly was just a normal human who wanted to teach people how to lead a good life and much like modern christianity people took this distorted it and blew it out of proportion to the point where it's a bastardized version of its original form. Jesus didn't want the bible to exist let alone having an entire religion centered around him for thousands of centuries.
would have been nice to have been actually biblical... instead of what i saw. john the baptist was long dead.. and other problems. which alot of people dont like today, if you represent the bible get it right or dont at all.
Good thing it’s a movie that was loosely written on the gospel of Matthew……and it was meant to entertain and teach. You should really try not to be so rigid. Just enjoy things for their face value.
They did not employ him for his talking... There was a man who had seven wives... who died of pancreatic cancer (another one!!!) though aged 82 (so not like Alan Rickmann or Patrick Swayze). He did his bit for Jesus and was - clearly - inspired by the Holy Spirit (on the set if not during interviews)
Godspell touched me…I felt God’s love.
RIP to the wonderful Lynne Thigpen-we can see here what a wonderful talented lady she was!🙏🏻
Rip to Jeffrey Mylett and David Haskell as well. Beautiful souls 💟
Oh ya and Merrell as well :(

The entire film was a delightful interpretation of the joy the deciples must have felt, along with the sadness.

Saw this first time in religion class way back in the day. Love these songs!
Before Victor Garber was Victor Garber. hahaha R.I.P. Lynne Thigpen, Merrell Jackson, Jeffrey Mylett, David Haskell. I loved this version the best.
The early deaths of these actors is really so sad. They are luminous in this film and all left us way too early.
And Lamar Alford, the original Lamar.

I have “Godspell” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” (1973) on my shelf right now. 😇

Amazing any of today's attention-loving narcissists would even 'get' that movie.
Thank you so much!! I have the DVD but it's lovely to see the making of it...and to talk about it with people who love Godspell as much as I do.
My sister too me to this when I was 9. She also took me to jesus christ superstar. Good times.
such a magical time in NYC and the world when anything was possible - like love and peace and compassion
IN NYC, peace was possible but not in Indo-China due to NYC's Wall Street backed conflicts.

People used to be able to convey their ideas brilliantly and without some political bias. Refreshing and spontaneous. I'm sorry for our loss.
I heard day by day on am radio it was my favorite song - i didnt know anything else about the song
Yes! Thank you for part 1. I had been hoping it would turn up.
I just finished watching the 40th(?) anniversary release of Godspell on DVD, and this is the type of documentary I was hoping they would put on the DVD.
The narrator in the opening has the old school broadcaster voice!
Thank you so much for uploading the making-of of this unforgettable movie!!
I was 4 years old when this was made, in 1973! 😊
I never seen this until now on utube
So was I, in Kharkov USSR. Haha
What a fantastic upload. Love this film and it's great to see all this footage. Cheers!
I can tell that Jermaine from the “The Flight of the Conchords” has seen this. He made that Director one of his characters.
Where do you get this stuff? There were no VCR's in 1973. What a treat!
They got these things called DVDs that are all the rage with the hep kids 😎
@@AiMR The question was where they got the footage not what format you can currently buy it in.
@@girrl88 The footage was on the DVD genius.

I'm going to New York City in a month so I hope to run into the Godspell filming locations
Good luck finding the twin towers.
I love listening to David Greene. He sounds like a regal imp.
As a kid this movie gave me the creeps. As an adult it is still creepy. Weird
I know- there's something creepy about it. I can't put my finger on it 🤔
I wasn't a fan of the clowns back then. It's still a bit unsettling to watch.

Stephen Schwartz reminds me of Rick Moranis.
Yes!
"I OWN NOTHING" me too Patches, me too. :)
I wonder why David Haskell was the only one not in costume. I like his Godspell sweatshirt.
Looks like a bunch of them had just the base of their costume on - it's just less obvious with Haskell bc his base was a t-shirt and jeans, haha.
brilliant
Steve Schwartz so young here So talented
Pittsburgh....I had no idea.
At around 1:10, is that WTC in the background? I bet it is by the extremely narrow windows on the building,
Yes, the Twin Towers were just being completed in 1973 and play a role in the film.
It's all gone now😩

At least there’s one person with a One Way, Jesus shirt.
I used to have a shirt that read, "No Way? Yahweh!"
Who knows WHERE is the place ? where was filmed ? I would like to visit in 2024
Great!

You like him to smoke
Everyone smoked in the 70s

Well, if Stephen Swartz isn't the most Jewish looking man I've ever seen then I haven't seen.
He's adorable/handsome here, I think.
I s'pose... so dark tho! I think he looks more jewish now, without that dark tan everyone seemed to have in the 70s.
And he was so young when he wrote this piece of brilliance! It’s really cool to hear him talk about the film and music.
Wow so... I was born this year -- which also produced the Jesus Christ Superstar and the film version of the EXORCIST.......just saying......
Everyone looks like they need a bath. “Odd Smell”
It was very difficult to differentiate between hobos and hippies back then.
