    Hey Chycho! I have a comment not regarding this particular topic at all: I've recently come across your video losing loved ones and dealing with death. I would love to see a video where you talk about breakups and your personal advice on the subject.
    Love your videos, you've helped me a lot, really.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад +3

      Oh my! Breakups are hard since each one is so different. My take over the years has basically become, that you haven't lived if you haven't had your heart broken, so every time you have a breakup you're living life.
      As for relationships, my take has always been that it's about intensity not about longevity.

    Great video. I didn’t know that amount of censorship took place in the comic book industry. Very enlightening. More comic history please.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  6 лет назад

      Yup, the censorship was crazy, and thinking about how long it lasted is even more insane.
      As for more comic book history, almost all of my comic book reads have a little history about them during the intros. Aside from that, I do have some straight up history vids lined up, I'll see what I can do to move them up the queue

      chycho yes, I meant straight up comic history. I watch all of your comic vids and I think they’re great.

    In the U.K. where I grew up I never even physically saw a comic book. As I got older I was aware of them as a counter culture. But what really got me interested was the 1st Sin City film. It was the 1st time I realised there where comics written targeted at older readers. Then I found out about Vertigo and Image and I've been loving it since. I only buy TPBs as I find it's the perfect length for a reading session. I could never read a comic for 10 minutes a month and stay interested in the story arc. I've tried some super hero comics such as Snyder's Batman run but I couldn't really get into them. I think because there is no nostalgia there for me. Thanks for the video Chycho, it was very interesting!

      My pleasure, brother, it's definitely an amazing world to delve into, glad you found your way to comics. And the first Sin City movie, fantastic! One of the best comic book adaptation, not to mention movies, ever.

    Great and informative video Chycho! The new volume of Brittania came out. Hope its on your pull list man. I didn't even know until I walked in my comic shop yesterday and got the last available first print off the shelf. Such a great first issue! Hope all is well brother! ✌️

      Yup, got my copy. I'm pulling all the Valiants except for faith... looked fantastic but I haven't read it though yet, waiting until I pick up the rest of my books this week, then it's a comic book reading we do for a few hours... i actually have some catching up to do, I'm way behind.

    You're very much right about it being very daunting as a new reader to walk into a comic book store for the first time, lol. I went in for the first time on Free Comic Book Day hoping to get my hands on the Avatar sampler, but it looks like the supplier couldn't get any to the local store. Thankfully one of the workers seemed to realize I looked fairly lost and helped me find some stuff I might like; I picked up Lake of Fire issue 1 because it looked more like a medieval-based story (we'll see how it goes), and best of all, they added me to a pull list for a WWE comic I didn't realize was still being published, so now I'll have comics for one of my favorite shows. :D Doubt I would have been half as interested in going if it weren't for your videos, though, so thank you. :)

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад

      My pleasure, and welcome to the world of comics. It does sound like you found a good store to go to, always a great thing when the workers know their stuff and are willing to help. Hope you enjoy :)

    I've noticed video games also becoming less censored over the decades. Sex and nudity is still censored but that is slowly coming to an end. Ironically, video games in Japan are becoming severely censored when 20 years ago I don't think anything was censored. Lack of censorship made Japanese games/comics/movies etc. very appealing to me in the 90s. Sad to see that change, but happy to have less censorship in the West.

      Japan started to change a few years ago. I realized it was going to go dark as soon as they made magic mushrooms illegal in 2002.

    Its kind of off topic, since this was mostly about censorship, but I personally got into comics because of the recent movies. I was always the type of person who would enjoy the comics, and I knew that, but the movies pushed me into finally watching them. I'm glad I did.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад +1

      Cool, glad that you found your way to the right books to stick around. What movie got you reading again? And what books kept you coming back for more?

    • @thorhammer737
      @thorhammer737 7 лет назад +1

      I'd actually never read a comic before, even though I was a fan of the Batman cartoons and MCU movies. For some reason X-Men Days of Future Past really got me into it. I went and got a subscription to the Marvel site which allows you to go back and read a lot of old comics for no additional cost. I went and read a ton of X-Men. The first like 280 issues, covering all of Claremont's first run, plus the Whedon run, and then I read a lot of the Bendis stuff. I've also dabbled in Daredevil, Spiderman, and Avengers. And once I got the comic bug in me, I also bought a lot of Batman trades and stories, and then tried Walking Dead, Preacher, Y the Last Man, and a bunch of Alan Moore comics.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад +1

      Oh WOW! That's a great progression. For me it was Claremont's X-Men that really got me hooked for the long run - I should at some point read them all as well, great job on that.... and very cool you found your way to the non-superhero books. Walking Dead, Preacher, Y the Last Man are three of the greatest series ever. Hope you enjoyed the first season of Preacher, I thought it was fun :)

    Thank you for another informative video! I was also wondering if you've read Transmetropolitan. It's one of my favorites, and I think it's some of Warren Ellis's best work; if you haven't read it you need to.

      My pleasure, Tobias, and yup, love Transmetropolitan, one of the greatest series of all time, and I agree. Even though I haven't read everything Ellis has done, but based on what I've read so far it is hands down his best work.

    i can imagine all kinds of comics from different eras being converted to virtual reality programs with advanced AI systems in the nest coming 50 yrs ! :D imagine interacting with the stories in matrix world where all your actions / and emotions affect the story line. I bet too many people might choose to live in those worlds instead or at least become mind bogglingly addicted to it O_O

    Well the characters are becoming mainstream due to the tv shows and movies but the actual comic sales are not up. There are millions of people watching these shows and movies, if only 10% would pick up the comics the sales would be huge, this is not the case. American comics sales are very low compared too manga. Look at the average sales of the two big American publishers Marvel and DC they both don't have that many books that sell 50.0000 let alone a 100.000. The only titels with that that many sales are 'Star Wars' and 'Batman'. So I don't share you optimism. In the 90's there were a lot of comics shops here in Amsterdam that sold American comics now there are only three. (Well and a couple of shops that sell European strips).I read articles on a regular basis of American stores closing and about a lot of shops that barely make ends meet.
    So I think the characters will always popular and will make lots of money selling merchendise, i think the superhero comics are in trouble. I think they will go the same way as Donald Duck comics in America (although Donald Duck comics are still very popular in Europe, it's the best selling magazine here in the Netherlands, including fashion,sports, etc) in that there are no new stories written anymore and hardly anyone reads them.
    I hope I am wrong.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад +2

      For sure comic books were in big trouble towards the end of the 1990's and early 2000's but in the last few years sales have picked up and more people are reading comics. As for why a lot of stores have been closing, it has more to do with the direct market, the price of comics, store business model and how certain publishers are treating their readers than the popularity of comics. What we're seeing is opening up of the industry rather than it's collapse, there are more choices now than ever before and that is a great thing. Just my take.

    • @JenniferJennyJen78
      @JenniferJennyJen78 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, but who are picking up these expensive comics? All the Indy books also start at $ 3,99 and the American market is primarily a floppy market oppositie to europe that is a album market. The floppy market is becoming way too expensive. From what I have read the new readers are not children and teenagers, who are the future. Yes there are more comics but they all sell marginally. April saw a 13% drop in sales compared to last year. Again the best selling Manga is selling in the millions there is no American floppy that comes close. And what are the actually digital sales of comics, no one wants to release them. I share your opinion in that is a great time as a reader of comics i just wish I could share your optimism in that the industry is really healthy but I think the whole industry must change to sustain and not become some fringe subculture, Well basiscally it already is imo anyway.Love this video by the way : )

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад

      I agree that sales are ridiculously low compared to other forms of comics present in Japan as well as compared to what they use to be, but I see some changes taking place that bring me hope. For example, DC selling their books at $2.99 (Rebirth anyway), and in the last couple of months a new publisher has hit the scene that is releasing their books all in newsprint and pricing them at $1.50, this is what we need.
      One thing is happening as well which I like as a collector is that the majority of back issues are cheaper to buy then the new releases, and that will be putting pressure on the industry to sort out the kinks in the business model.
      One thing I'll add here as well, imho, one of the most important changes that has to take place is to take the monopoly power away from Diamond Distributors, they are doing so much damage to the industry and they have been for a very long time. Something I might get into later.
      Fingers crossed we're still here to talk about this in a few years :)
      ps. and I totally agree about digital sales, I find it incredible that the industry is hiding these numbers. We need transparency if we're going to resolve some of our issues.

      Don't get used to it Chycho the PC Police are going to make sure that eventually some form of censorship will be attached to comics again. I don't know how things are in Canada but here in the US it's getting worse and worse every day. People are offended by everything. Somehow this country has become full of people that feel the need to be a victim of something. It will take only a small percentage of them to see something in a comic book that they think they can victimize themselves with to set it in motion. Why do Batman and Superman have to be so tough and manly? Why can't Batman be transgender and still be a crime fighter? Oh Spiderman body shamed Mockingbird Marvel promotes body shaming. I'm telling you Chycho they will get the comics too. But you might be safe in Canada I'm not aware of things in that country.

    • @chycho
      @chycho  7 лет назад

      Oh, if it hits you guys it'll hit us as well. A lot of people have forgotten how to be human anymore or even how to live and experience life, but I don't think they will be able to put the genie back in the bottle, unless of course they are given the power to censor, filter, and throttle the internet - which they are trying to do.
      We see where it all goes, but I do see great things happening, hopefully we continue down this road.

    not to be political or claim comic mastery but imo the SJW far left movement has been creeping the comic industry along with movies ):

    • @chycho
      @chycho  5 лет назад

      Agreed on this, that's why, in general, I prefer comics from independent publishers, they have way less filters.
