This subject has been brought up with some friends. One went to a class, and they worked mostly with hand to hand and then combative shooting when they just wanted the basic shooting skills class to improve their abilities for self-defense. I first took Micks class to see about my abilities and the possibility of teaching others as an instructor myself. After his class I saw my weaknesses and I improved on my skills. An important thing for a person to know is their own capabilities and know what you know and know that you need to learn to become better. Mick shows us that we need to always be learning and experiencing to become more efficient. I will continue to take his classes for my own improvement.

Man I can totally relate to the guy that says can't afford training because that's where I am currently. I also have a big family to take care of and work a lot of overtime to do so. I started carrying a gun when I moved to Glendale Arizona almost 4 years ago now. Overtime I have obtained more then just my carry gun but at first when I bought my carry gun I knew I needed to do something to understand the legal side of things and also engrain the fundamentals of handling a firearm. So I turned to the internet of course besides watching reviews videos on reliable firearms I stumbled across the Carry Trainer videos and boy did I go down a great rabbit hole lol. I bought target stands, targets, then went to town on training myself. I believe I have watched every video some more then once. I carry with confidence and safety from your videos also have taught my wife and my children that are old enough to handle a fire arm. Even went as far as buying secure it gun safes that are placed in 3 different areas of our home. Now of course I watch a lot of stuff to learn new things but your videos for sure I have engrained in me. I'm now in a future promotable position at my job and told my self when one of the times you are back in Pheonix you will definitely see me in your class in the near future. I will end this with a big thank you and cannot express my appreciation enough for the content you put out. Watching this made me realize man when I started my firearm journey carry trainer was there from the start and still is so thanks again sir. I can't wait to take what I've learned to the next level.

I was chatting with a retired cop at USPSA a couple days ago. He said he used to always try to convince his police buddies to come compete in IDPA and USPSA to sharpen their skills. He told be that almost without fail, they would come shoot one match and never come back. He said it was an ego thing, that competing taught them that they weren’t actually nearly is good as they thought they were. I know from experience how humbling the competition world can be when you get smoked by great shooters who don’t look like they should be good. But I thought that was funny that he said lots of LEOs that he brought to competitions quit because their egos were bruised.

I think the most critical time for someone to seek out the services of a trainer is when they first decide to get a gun. I suppose shooting can be self taught for a few, but many new shooters who sign up for their first concealed carry class also come there to get their first lessons in marksmanship and gun handling because someone told them the concealed carry folks would teach them. In my state, it’s an eight hour course with a few slides in class on the fundamentals, then as much time on the range as it takes to shoot the qualification course once or twice as needed. Learning the fundamentals first is more critical than anything else. A good trainer will help someone get there in the early stages. Then go to concealed carry class.

  • @frugalprepper

I have been into guns for many years. I have bought and carried many guns over the years. About 5 years ago, I went to a training class, and another, and another.... and I practiced what I leaned in training till I didn't get it wrong. I had to unlearn many bad habits I had developed over the years. Unlearning a bad one is much harder that learning it right the first time. I am not great, but I can get a reliable 1.2 second draw from concealment, and I can hit reliably out to about 15 yards quick, and I have to slow it down when I get out to 20 and 25 yards. Today I still have all my other guns but I carry a Glock.... Not because I love Glocks in particular, but I carry it because it works. By that I don't mean it just goes bang every time I pull the trigger, it works for me. I can get the sight picture, and the grip right every time. And I love training classes. I always learn something.

I went to a trainer & learned a skill, got the job done. Went to a new trainer, he told me the last guy taught me wrong & I had bad habits. The new trainer was going to teach me a better way. So now I have to unlearn my bad habits & relearn, I got confused! Bullshit. I was getting the job done the old way! The new way wasn't better, just different! I practice the way that got the job done & don't go to new trainers!

I am in my 60s. I spent my working life in the Army. I have seen a lot of people trying to be like a spec ops operator. I have seen magazines emptied in seconds. Marksmanship? Not as much. Slow handgun courses of fire get you there to accuracy. After that, all things can be practiced and added. I was glad to hear you mention marksmanship before more complicated things. I got a laser trainer. That is an easy, useful home training aid. It helps.

This was a really great vid, thank you! Interesting timing - I just had a back and forth yesterday with a well-known podcaster/trainer about this very topic. He said in his most recent podcast that anybody who is not class-trained is not trained at all, and that just going to the range and shooting is not training but just playing around and having fun (which he also admitted was fine to do, as well). I think part of it, was he is always drumming up business, and he loves to discuss how many classes HE goes to, etc. I understood what he was saying, but at the same time, I didn't completely agree with him for the very reasons your email sender talked about. These are tough times, and especially with a family, sometimes going to a 500 to 1500 or more class isn't in the cards. So does that mean, leave the gun at home because you aren't really serious about your defense (which is what the podcaster was saying...that if you aren't taking training classes, you aren't really serious about the role you are taking on). I called BS, and now supposedly his next episode he wants to discuss it further. I suspect he'll double down with less irritating wording. Ah well.
