Trey Hensley - Learn how I play “Gold Rush”! (Flat-picking guitar tutorial)

  • Hey y’all...here’s a (somewhat) quick tutorial on how I play the bluegrass standard “Gold Rush”. One thing I didn’t mention is what key I’m playing in (duh...sorry!). This is a traditional fiddle tune in the key of A, so I have a capo on the second fret playing out of the G position. When I reference “g” or “c” position in the video, I’m talking in reference to the chord shapes I’m using with the capo. Sorry for any confusion!

Let me know if there are any other tunes y’all would want to see a tutorial on!

Amazing Trey, thanks so much for posting. It pays tribute to Tony’s version but is inherently your version. So helpful!

    You're a good picker
But that's too fast. This song sounds best at about 200 BPM. people are playing things too fast anymore just because they can.
Everyone wants to be Tony Rice or Billy strings but they play some songs too fast also
I miss the old days when people didn't try too impress so much and actually play a tasteful version of songs
I don't play anything over200 BPM , sometimes 180 BPM. The listener's have to be able to keep and recognize the melody and enjoy it.
Maybe I'm just too old fashioned.

Well, all I was trying to do was upload a free lesson on this song. Shame on me, I guess. I am not trying to be anybody else and I’m not trying to impress you or anybody else. I was trying to do a free instructional video for those who had asked for this song. And for what it’s worth, Tony played it faster than I do. 🤷‍♂️ This version is no where near 180 or 200 bpm that you mention, so not sure what that’s about.
      Take care.

@@TreyAHensley , I just meant in general.. not you in particular..I just think people are playing things too fast because they can when actually it sounds better a little slower. Still fast but not crazy fast..I just don't think it sounds good.
I'm sorry if I offended you..I didn't mean too.. you're a great picker for sure..
I guess I can see how my wording could be offensive.. I'm sorry...
I play fast in practice myself just not that far in actual performance.. to each their own..I apologize

@@TreyAHensley, Tony often played too fast in my opinion. His blackberry blossom is too fast . Can hardly tell the melody...
Again, I'm sorry..I didn't mean to upset you...I guess I should keep my opinions to myself unless asked... you're a Great player

@@mgibby63mg hey, thank you for clarifying and I am sorry if my reply to you came across as snarky or overly rude. Unfortunately, social media (and text in general) can misconstrue intent…my apologies for being so defensive.
Thank you very much for the kind words, though…I do appreciate it! Take care!

@@TreyAHensley , you know..I have a membership in a website that I learn from time to time... his backing tracks i used said they are 200 BPM. When I visit another website or get a track on youtube that says 200 BPM , they are way faster than the 200 BPM on the first site i mentioned..I thought I was playing 200 BPM But obviously I'm not.. it's still plenty fast..I never gave it any thought until I looked at backing tracks for gold rush on youtube.. I'm confused about that..I emailed the site that says they're 200 BPM about it.. I'm awaiting a response..
