GENUINE question for everyone: does anyone else feel like the new gen of grime has started falling off slightly? One of the hardest genres out there but i just feel this past year was very weak
Derp Mahoy yh I get where ur coming from like compared to 2015 and 2016 the new gen was really popping but there’s been some good releases in 2018 from big zuu, jammz, pk, yizzy etc but radar radio ending did not help.
I mean, think about the new gen from lotm 3 in 2012, you’ve got absolute monsters like merky ace, kozzie, d power (ik he was a producer but as a mc he was new), tre mission. Its hard to live up to that.
Derp Mahoy ngl they are all dead IMO.. maybe I’ll start to rate them more next year
In terms of MTP, YGG, The Square, Jammz, Capo, etc. The only who's really held it up (maybe even improved) is Mez, the rest were better before the halfway point of this year. The lyrics and songs they create now are more polished and soft
I think MCs have a bigger focus on being an artist/success atm. Give it time and people will come back to sets, I feel like it's a part of the genre you can't run away from. Think about most of the top UK artists: they all started from sets.
Also platforms like FITB has unfortunately turned to peoples quick route to fame. MCs will go back to roots soon.
Also remember shelling sets is a unique skill. In the history of grime we've only had hand a handful (in comparison to the huge amount of MCs there are) have been true Mic controllers.
