This. People who are mad at the wrong people assume squatting is a victimless crime and that every abandoned property is owned by multi-million dollar real estate agencies and banks.
The truth is a lot of these properties are owned by people just like that guy. Someone who saved up to buy a property and who is working to fix the house up, putting in their own time and money, in hope that maybe one day it will be a worthwhile investment.

Most squatters in the US take from criminal mortgage sharks and house flippers though. Honest people getting squatted on is quite rare. (and the only scenario where police are correct to evict)
Look at 3:56, flipper just left it vacant for years looking for a victim to scam with some paint on top of a rotten core. Squatters instead live in it. Flipper then comes in trying to make 20 people homeless brandishing a gun playing illegal thug-tactics on them without a court eviction verdict, criminal gets out-thugged by the squatters defending themselves and starts crying, calls Dayton police and it's tax dollars to flipper's rescue.
So you got to ask yourself what's more important: Flipper getting rich off of a scam, or a dozen+ people (questionable as some may be) being homeless and you paying their emergency medical bills all the time because they sleep rough.

Squatter "rights" need to be removed or drastically change. This is THEFT plain and simple. When caught, these thieves never pay for damage or lost rent even after you win in court. The courts NEVER go after them.

The black gentleman who was fixing up a house and found what he though was like 20 people moving stuff into it. I am absolutely amazed that the cops were willing to go straight in and remove them. Maybe the gun threat had something to do with it.
In too many places, once a squatter gains entry, the laws make the home owner go to court, prove he's not renting the place out, and that could take a month, then eviction could take another month, then 10 more days for them to move out. And that's the shortest time limit. I've heard of some evictions that took 2 or 3 years.

A group of other druggies pretended to be her friend, got us into their home to “help us out” got me arrested and used her for her check. She just got her liscense this year, and this happened more than five years ago. They would only take her to get her life saving medicine in exchange for her little ss card. They would leave her dope sick and feed her dope in exchange for the check. (no excuse for doing heroin but she does have leukemia, she could never get pain meds while still in KY, so I have mixed feelings about it) Eventually they just kept her card and would not give it back. This happened until I got out of jail.
I’m clean now years later but she still struggles. I now have a stepdad at least. I may not like him but he does protect her at least now that we live four states apart.

She was a highly intelligent professional prior to her strokes and she’d have better mental capacity had they just believed her when she told them clear as day, “I am having a stroke” (something a seasoned RN would know). But they treated her like a senile old woman instead and let her brain die for 2 days straight before they finally agreed to do more testing. When someone has something wrong with their brain, you cannot be impatient or judgmental. The way people treat my mom infuriates me and if you don’t have compassion, you shouldn’t work in law enforcement or the medical field. I hate to say it but I was a squatter at one time. I was 15 years old and my home life was terrible and I ran away from home. I hitch hiked from Philly and eventually ended up in Tampa, FL. I had only the clothes on my back and lived on food from dumpster diving. Oh and way too many grapefruits from the surrounding groves. I found an abandoned home in a not so nice neighborhood but the water was still in. I lived in that house for about 3 months going in and out of a bathroom window. I was so scared I was going to get caught or someone would hurt me. I don’t think I slept very well the whole time I was in there due to fear and the oppressive heat of summer and no AC. Fortunately I had fake ID and was able to get a job that enabled me to rent a room.
After a year and a half I turned 17 and returned home. My parents signed enlistment paperwork for me to join the Navy. Again I was so lucky that the Navy wasn’t requiring a HS diploma to join cause I only made it to the 10th grade. Joined the Navy, continued my education and probably this year will retire from a career in Naval Aviation. I own my own home, both my children do as well. A loving family and I volunteer extensively with the homeless because I was in their shoes at one time. I know what it’s like to fight a possum for a day old box of donuts. I am so blessed.
