  • This piece is an Eight Song | Mandoline, Harp, & Bells Music box from sometime in the mid 1870's, and was made in Switzerland by B.A. Brémond.
This piece that came to us was seized, and had quite a bit of corrosion and runout, and many of the pivots were worn and in need rebuilding. We had abated all of the corrosion and stopped those destructive processes, though this was primarily a preventative conservation with some elements of a remedial conservation with all of the pivots repaired and re-burnished and all of the pivot holes brought back to proper run and range.
The only cosmetic change was the replacement of the Bell isolation packing, removal of corrosion from the Sound Comb, and a really good operational cleaning and conditioning to mitigate further corrosion. The client desired excellent quality sound and running characteristics and a similar look to its original state, and not a full polish restoration.
The song list is as follows:
1.) The Wedding March - Mendelssohn
2.) The Gate Ajar for Me - Hymn
    3.) Spring Song - Mendelssohn
    4.) Tannhäuser March - Wagner
    5.) Home Sweet Home
    6.) Sweethearts - Waltz by D'Albert
    7.) Don Giovanni - Serenade
8.) Bon Vivant - Galop by Steinhagen
Baptiste-Antoine Brémond was born in Geneva in August of 1834 into a family of Jewelers. His father and elder brother followed the family business as it was a small family workshop. The Bremonds' were originally from France and settled in Geneva in 1698.
In his young life, Baptiste-Antoine assisted his father mastering skills in Jewelry creation. Later he became interested in Horological Mechanics, and promptly ventured into watch making.
In the middle of the 19th century Western Europe was in age of musical mechanics including Clocks, Automatons, and Music Boxes. The production of music boxes, interior design and décor items with built-in musical mechanisms (movements) became a profitable business, and in 1858 Baptiste-Antoine joined the manufacturing company 'Théodore Greiner’s' firm as a partner.
Baptiste-Antoine eventually married the daughter of the famous Swiss businessperson David Lengdorf in 1859. The marriage supported him financially and allowed him to realize the long-life dream of owning his own business. After a five-year partnership with 'Théodore Greiner's' firm, in 1863 Bremond founded his private firm. It was very successful and for nearly 50 years. 'B.A. Brémond Fabricant' was one of the most respected firms among Swiss companies, producing mechanical music boxes in the 19th century.

Music boxes are one of those lost arts, almost. They really characterize an entire age. Thankyou for restoring it.

Thank you for the kind words my friend. Indeed they do, they really embody a time when the mechanical was really all we had. And it really made the actions, and purposes of music and Art so much more precious and intentional. And I really feel we take that for granted today. In our recent age of technology, actions and intentions have become effortless. This can be both good and bad, we have come very far technologically within the solid state advancements in the realm of resisters, transistors, micro-processors, Cheez-Its., etc. Though it is important to remember where we came from, and in that it reminds us of what we are capable of; and in turn helps us direct with a calm foresight of where we are going. Thank you again my friend.

It is playing yes, It is combined with the bell actuation train to supplement the bells and can be difficult to hear within the recording.
