Woodturning - the Triple Crotch

  • Another challenging Hickory Crotch log from the files. I had to do a bit of modification on it, like sawing off the fourth branch where the Tailstock went (saved me much tool sharpening time) and "shaving" off some bark that would have been bouncing off of my face shield. I used my Half Draw Knife which resembles a straight edge razor!
I really like the grain in this wood and I kept a bit of the natural edge.
    Sanded 60-3000gt
    Mineral Oil finish only.
    Thank for watching. Please subscribe.

Very nice work, that’s the kind of wood I would choose for my turning project. Glad you saved it before it flew off the machine.

Oh things have flown off many times. Some manage to go uninjured, while others end up in the burn pile

Interesting work. I think it’s best to as much nature in the piece as possible. You have done this here. Great 👍🏻 job

The stogie is a nice touch, BUT it seems a bit dangerous with piles of sawdust just below the lathe.

That’s why there’s an extinguisher 🧯. And it’s less dangerous than those turners who burn their pieces with a torch lol!! Which I will do eventually

I think he did great with a piece of wood which could have been very difficult. You can do better? Post a video and show us.

Thank you. I almost lost it cutting the tenon off. Had to saw it then grind it off. Lil split in it caused a Nick so I got nervous trying to tool it off

You scared me when you started to cut the wings off, but thankfully you left them in tact. 😂Nice piece.

Your work is beautiful and the wood is exquisite. Thank you for treating it with so much respect.
Unfortunately, your camera quality is not good and the picture breaks up bad. That might discourage people from subscribing to watch more content.

First I’ve heard of film quality. I preview everything and it looks fine from my screen. Although sometimes my lighting is not great. I will work on it, I’m better on the lathe than the camera

It looked good on my screen. Perhaps she was experiencing slow internet speed. That can definitely cause it to break up.

I love seeing turning videos! I am 75 years old and just gave my 1948 Delta lathe to my son. But you just freaked me out when you lit cigar came into view.... Are there not loads of shavings on the floor from the turning??? That is like smoking in the barn...

I only light the stogies when I’ve either cleaned up or before the mess. I had a late 30’s 9” Delta Milwaukee for a time, only used it for pens and smaller items. I sold it to a young learner

Out of curiosity, what brand of lathe? The orange color caught my attention of a brand I have not seen before.

It’s a Mybackhurtz! Lol! Kidding, it’s a Bauer 14” and more on the Red side than orange. Could be because of the lighting
