Wibble Rugby: The New England Way | Why Brilliant Borthwick is England's Messiah

  • In the wake of a surprising performance at RWC 2023, England is on the brink of an exciting new era. With the spotlight intensely focused on the new England, Head Coach Steve Borthwick has orchestrated a masterstroke. By enlisting Felix Jones, a two-time World Cup-winning coach; Richard Wigglesworth, a savant of the kicking game; Tom Harrison, a scrum connoisseur; and Aled Walters, a strength and conditioning guru with world champion credentials, England is crafting a game plan that whilst revolutionary, unapologetically harkens back to the key strengths of World Champion English Rugby.
    Today, we're not just revealing the strategy behind England's gameplan-we're diving headfirst into the style that could redefine Test rugby as we know it. With an astute blend of cutting-edge defensive maneuvers, a precision-focused kicking strategy, and set-piece plays that merge innovation with the old bulldog spirit of English Rugby, this game plan aims to turn England into an indomitable force on the rugby field.
    Grab a beer, sit back and enjoy. It's one hell of a story.

    After rwc semi final no one in rsa was doubting borthwick. He punished us using similar tactics to how we beat france. Not identical, but similar. Kick chase, tap back, back row and centres present to either challenge the break down, or ball carry. Relentless outside in blitz defence.
    We did not enjoy facing our own game and it made us look awful.
    Us saffers are very tired of the world calling our team dumb lumbering beasts when in fact, as your video demonstrates, our team is incredibly intelligent.
    We had not faced our own tactics but we worked out a path to victory within the confines of that single match.
    Pity for england they dont have a better scrumager than ellis genge... if his knee hadnt hit the floor on that last scrum england would have been in the final.

    Think you have laid out what the plan is well. I think England still have development to do on the players being totally comfortable with the defensive system (the Felix Jones 14 game comment) and until they are all absolutely dialled in on the defence they will occasionally get burned around the edges. We saw this again vs Ireland. I think the frustration for most England fans and journalists (I am not one) is that there is really not an opportunity for England to have development games - you are straight out of a World Cup, into a 6N, so immediate results are required. England are developing a way of playing which is not popular/attractive but can (if executed properly) generate wins consistently. The most interesting part of the vid was the specialist tight 5 camps, and what this will generate in the medium term, as at present I see this as the biggest difference between Eng system and SA, The Boks dominate at scrum times, and England's best scrummagers are their least mobile props. Developing 6 front row where there is no drop off (or compromise) in scrummaging capability or mobility for a full 80 mins will be critical if England are to be successful in the long-term with this strategy. Great video - must take huge amount of effort to produce - thanks for laying it out for us.

Particularly around the kicking game…I absolutely love Jim Hamilton he’s hilarious and his analysis is actually quite good…his partner in crime however seems to have taken it upon himself to be some kinda of contrarian crusader…a type of Pierce Morgan type character in the rugby media. “Not afraid to say it as it is” sort of thing. Moneyball to beat "Rock" can still be beaten by "Scissors". Rugby is a coctail of Muscle , speed , skill, organisation, intelligence, courage ..... and luck. To string a series of wins along one has to be able to be more than one dimensional.

      The game is played by humans on grass, not on computer simulations; statistical predictions can only take you so far with human behaviour, notoriously unpredictable to begin with.

      One outcome of professionalism seems to be the prominence of defensive and attacking systems. I think the Moneyball thinking comes in, is when a coach is picking the system that he wants to implement, rather than attempting to forecast the future. But as Tyson said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth".

    Good stuff. Anyone doubting the method and rigour of Borthwick are not paying attention and insulting the brilliance of teams like Ireland. I am confident SB will get results and achieve something special, then I hope this type of strategic approach becomes permanently engrained in our system as opposed to what happened post 2003.

      I wouldn’t worry about it, England’s only chance is Ireland having a bad day at the office, I think you’ll wallop them, this video is very good at analysing when England get it right, the trouble is, of late they rarely do, they‘ve been awful this 6N, they limped home by 2 points against the most inexperienced Welsh side in living memory, at home.

    I think this channel must be suffering some kind of hidden treasure paradox. The best analysis on RUclips by some distance in my eyes, yet not as widely known as most other channels. I hope Wibble isn't irked by this.

      I don't care mate. I don't. My analysis is very niche and as long as people enjoy it. I'm happy 😊

      @@WibbleRugbyDon't watch Squidge rugby so much these days. Some good stuff in my view but comes with the annoying cognitive load of having to filter out the ideological noise ('wokery' etc.) they mix into the content. Throws your concentration off a bit. EK rugby I don't know. I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.

      With all due respect, how long have we got to wait? It's been 20 years since we've had a world beating team.

    • @henrymilleruk100
      @henrymilleruk100 4 месяца назад +2

      @@NotApplicable678 well realistically given SB didn’t have his full/permanent coaching compliment at the WC I would say at least more than 4 games. We are looking at 1-2 more years for the system to set in, for better collaboration with the prem and for the (props) breaking through to mature. I know that’s frustrating but I think after Eddies saga + Covid prem collapse we are looking at not just a rebuilding of the England squad but of a larger English pathway system.
      France were pretty crap for years, in that time they rebuilt the club and pathway, same for Ireland and even Italy.
      I’m tired of it too but I’m just trying to not hold past systemic failures against the current situation. It’s also just more fun because we can rant all we want and call our team shit but it won’t change the reality of the circumstances.
      I hope we are both waiting a lot less though! 😅

    • @Burninglash
      @Burninglash 4 месяца назад +1

      @NotApplicable678 that's because England bought into copying New Zealand instead of playing to your strengths. South Africa showed over and over, that's not how you beat New Zealand. When you let nz define what constitutes good rugby, you stack the deck in nz favor. Interesting to me is the 2 biggest unions in terms of total players both are most effective when they embrace set piece play.

    Excellent analysis. Still wonder why England's skills let them down so badly against Scotland. Also whilst they do have a lot of the necessary talents to push the system forward they are still desperately weak at 12 (Lawrence is a 13 at present) which is unbalancing the back line. I also hold out great hopes for CC-S at 6,
    his lineout work will have to become more dominant though Perhaps use Peter O'Mahoney as a role model for that aspect.

    Not to take away from your very informative video, but you (the royal you) can learn much of this analysis just from simply listening to likes of Borthwick (as you gave examples of).
    Too many allow all the info from ENG pressers/interviews to go through their ears, only watching in the hope they will finally be told that Marcus Smith will save ENG rugby.
    Again, brilliant!
    Thanks,

    Love the content you produce, thanks for all the work you put into your vids!
    As someone who's firmly in the "Borthwick knows what he's doing but building a system takes time" camp, it's heartening to see my gut instinct backed up by someone who's basing their opinion on detailed professional analysis of what England have been doing.
    It's a huge shame that this kind of analysis isn't given more prominence by the sports media; I guess there's more ad revenue to be made by employing ex-players to deliver simplistic, band wagon jumping, soundbites. 🙄
    Fantastically heartening result yesterday, still very early in the journey, but hopefully a sign of what's to come. We badly need props but it's great to hear that you're seeing young talent coming through the pipeline.
    Thanks again, can't wait for your next vid!
