The scene where Rue begs fez to open the door is also a parallel to Leonardo DiCaprio’s role in another film where he’s playing a drug addict begging his mom instead to open the door
Yesss my mind immediately jumped to Basketball Diaries when I saw Rue crying outside Fez's door. My ex would speak about the movie because he too dealt with addiction and he'd steal from his mom; this was when we were in high school and it's been around ten years since we spoke, but something about the way Zendaya portrayed the helplessness took me straight back to those days. My ex is doing well now and that's all that matters ❤️
Omg your drawing parallels where they don’t exist- you realize most drug addicts are erratic like that and bang on doors? Their family or friends have to finally cut them off. It’s common human nature. It’s not “copying”basketball diaries.
I've heard a few people, usually over the age of 30, referring to the coloured lighting on this show saying things similar to "the lighting dosn't look like this in college dorms" or "teen-agers don't sit around under purple lights all day" but almost everyone I know has coloured led lights these days, so...yea

When rue is banging on fez doors for drugs. Straight copy cat from "Basketball diaries" when Leo is at his moms door begging and screaming at her for money so he can buy drugs. And people will say how that was one of the deepest scenes in euphoria But they straight copied it
my favorite reference is that shot of Cassie crying with all the roses. I’m Mexican and when i was watching the show I knew right away what it was referencing! I immediately thought a mix of Our Lady of Sorrows and La Virgen de Guadalupe with a bunch of roses surrounded. Especially Sorrows because Cassie is crying and her facial expression looked very identical to the Sorrowful Lady.

I’d like to point out that just because you didn’t have this reality doesn’t make it any less realistic. I went to a high school like this with girls wearing heels and people being full on addicted to hard drugs. Just saying. Maybe if this especially the addiction part seems dragged out or unrealistic to you ia because you were lucky enough not to experience these things.
Good critics. Now I understand better why I am impressed with the cinematography and feeling the nostalgia. I have watched most of the references movies and iconic scenes. Thank you for explaining!
I think that there is a reference to My So Called Life in the way that Jules is a bit of a Rayanne Graff for Rue, a new person that she becomes fascinated with and chooses to have a relationship with as she grows out of her friendship with her childhood best friend Lexi (similar to how Angela 'grows out' of her friendship with Sharon). But I like the way that in Euphoria it is shown more gradually and there is not a big argument or rupture, and ultimately I think Rue realises that it is ok for friendships to change and evolve and she has space in her life for Lexi even if they are no longer in the same dynamic they would have had when they were younger. And we obviously have the direct reference to MSCL when Gia is watching it in her room which I think is a cute moment! And the scenes when they are cycling home through suburbia also give me MSCL vibes!
the show is so unrealistic but i kinda think that’s why euphoria is so successful. let’s be real, if it was similar to the REALITY of teenagehood, barely anyone would watch it. i really hope intertextuality becomes more prevalent in other shows. this was a great take!
When Cassie stormed out with Nate at the play and then started staring and breathing hard on the glass window it gave me Carrie vibes at prom. I felt like it showed she really put herself into such a victim mentality and felt like the whole world was against her for no reason and that she's innocent. That's one of Cassies main flaws and something that she does throughout the entire 2 seasons.
Whoever sets up the scenes in this show must love Renee Magritte. You see the artwork "The Lovers" as one of the famous recreated scenes between Rue and Jules, and in the most recent episode (S2E7), you see "Not to be Reproduced", which is er, reproduced with Nate.
Theory is, the scenes based on art. Frida as the main inspiration for a few. The flower sequence is in one of her artworks. Especially since Frida dealt with quite the similar story. Sort of stealing a man from some one else and ending up in heart ache. Lexi was another reference, also to the girl with the pearl earring.
Anyone who thinks he has any talent hasn't bothered actually diving into the basics of artistry. Just remember that his dad is Barry Levinson and every movie he has done has been critically panned.

DU you blew me away with this analysis of euphoria. A lot of references I sometimes got though I didnt even see some you brought up. Gave me a whole other look into the euphoria universe that inspired me to keep looking around, Keep it up!!!!
You got the ending of Midsommar completely wrong, I mean there is no such thing as a good explanation, but it surely ISN'T about overcoming your fears or self-love. Even the director himself told the audience that this is a horror ending.
In a moment between Pelle and Dani, when he asks if she feels “held by him,” it's a key moment to Dani's realization. The last image of Christian being burned in the house and Dani smiling is visually showing one the at-times violent removal one must do with someone in order to find peace with herself. Thats the symbolism I thought was very accurate. But plainly looking at the whole movie its a horror shit show indeed haha
@Du Cinema I thought that the end of midsommar showed how easy it is for a cult to use the pain and instability of another to brainwash them and make them completely dependent on them, whilst also having them believe that they are completely in control of their decision. In essence, that is the exact same thing that has happened to Cassie. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about midsommar and most will say that the movie itself brainwashed you. With the swelling music, colourful scenes and Danny’s smile, it has tricked you into thinking what happened is a good thing. That’s my take.
The director of Midsommar classifies the movie as a breakup movie. There's simply horrific elements and things that take place, circling around the toxic relationship.
I just found you on accident. You make the videos that I wish I could. Speaking themes, achievements and through lines in cinema. The underlying causes for our feelings toward cinematography, lighting, vignettes, etc. Incredible work and my only complaint is you haven't made enough yet lol KEEP IT UP!
I just want to say, I found a scene in season 2 episode 7. There’s a scene in Lexi’s play where Nate’s dream (I think) he is looking at the mirror and it looks like René Magrette’s “Not to be Reproduce”. I was so shock when I saw it since the shot it so beautiful. It’s also connected because the art is not to be reproduce which can be like Nate.
I've discovered Labrinth with Tinie Tempah in my teens and was suprised when i saw that he made the wonderful music that played through Euphoria. It just fits perfectly! It's what really made me start to sob at times. It pulled me into the scene and made it feel closer.

I swear the blending of colors and how it resonated with each character's feelings as well as the use of shadows of street view and surroundings reminded me of one of the most intense movies I had ever watched, The Neon demon. Incredible
In the end, when you were talking about the “realism” of the show, I can agree there are many aspects that are unrealistic, but the part where you say the lighting isn’t like that in dorms, I can tell you right now that every gen z dorm room I have been in has LED lights in those colors lol.
I love the fact that Nate’s scene was a reference to Vincent Cassel’s La Haine mirror play which was a reference of Taxi Driver by Robert De Niro. Movies to my taste
I was absolutely blown away by season 1. I am ten years in recovery and I don’t believe this show glorifies drug use, if anything it’s pretty accurate how awful addiction is. However, I don’t find any of the characters aside from Roo and her dealer very interesting (I thought She deserved an award she is absolutely phenomenal) They are flushed out but they’re all incredibly narcissistic, & Jules is portrayed like this perfect human whom everyone instantly loves and I just see a rich girl who hasn’t really earned how people regard her & leaves many broken in her wake. To your point though, it is for me, a visual delight and I really enjoyed watching you break that down. I also love that the music is almost like a character and is so eclectic (a bit like my taste in music) but it’s so much louder than the dialogue so I am constantly moving my volume throughout an episode.
I would have to disagree with how you view Jules. I think she just kinda has a happy go lucky view of life and she gets screwed over multiple times for it. I kinda don’t like to talk about season 2 when it comes to her tho. I feel like all her development was stripped randomly because of behind the scenes things. Such as arguments, etc. I really like Jules season one and thought she was relatable. She’s not perfect, she makes a lot of mistakes, but I think she’s just young and dumb. She means well.

You forget the Rue/Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 4th wall reference which is typically used with Rue as a mechanical to remind the audience that she may be lucid, but she is indeed present; way more than she lets on, despite the drug use. She only does it to react to something and mostly it’s through expression, versus dialogue. I always find it interesting considering the theories regarding her narration, and specifically how that could be looked at as breaking the fourth wall, but they do it through different mediums to expound on feeling, and to provide emotional context. This was a dope video too btw.

This explanation just made me realize why I love this series so much. I always loved it but never understood why and when being asked about it, I could never explain why exactly.
Identify with the character Cassie. I also identify with rue. I can also identify with Maddie. Luckily when I was a teenager particularly my high school years were in 1997-2001. I can personally attest to the sex and drug use and bisexuality. The parties the danger in my life that I experienced during those years. Sam Levinson and I are the same age. Also like Sam I was an addict. I've been sober for 15 years myself and this is why I absolutely love how even though this series can be a little over the top and overly dramatic, I can identify with it as a whole.
I loved Rocketman. I read some interviews, and they acknowledged the how inaccurate some events depicted were, but they weren't aiming for Realism- if you watched the movie they made that clear, instead they were capturing memories of experiences.
I started watching Euphoria in 2020 (before it was popular) I was so tired and I needed some movie to watch. I saw video with 10 best movies (serials) and I choose Euphoria for no reason. When I watched it for the first time I was like „wtf is this " because Euphoria gives me some special feeling and I NEVER saw something that full of feelings and perfection. Now people are like: „Did u see Euphoria?” and I am always like: „yeah..." and inside I'm really happy that I was between people who watched it at time when nobody knows Euphoria. I literally waited for every next episode. Euphoria is my drug! 🔮
i miss the teen feeling and pop culture references of s01 tho s02 is too much retro and dramatic, it fits rue's arch but the fun is gone imo (kat and jules were rlly fun to watch but the vibes are missing this season)
Bitch, since Maddy's sort of turned into this bizarre "Queen of Closed Doors" I would say that that would be a pretty obvious reference to Resident Evil, you know, "The door is locked from the other side" or "Door won't open. It's stuck" lmao

aside from the montage of rue and jules in various portryals of relationships i didnt pick up almost any reference (mi not big into film stuff) so when we saw the opening shot of nate with the sink, i still think it did an amazing job portraying his aggressiveness despite not knowing what the shot is based off of- i think if a piece of media is able to use pop culture references but you can still understand the media without the reference then you have made something that truly capture a wider audience (even for the montage scene despite those being very iconic scenes (obciously why they were chosen) you can still tell that its trying to portray the love between them- also how they (meaning the titanic and brokeback moments) convey the future tradgey of their relationship)
I think the first episode has a reference to the french movie “a portrait of a lady on fire”.(a movie about a relationship between two women in the 1800’s, worth a watch) In the scene that jules sees rue smoking a joint in the campfire, the close ups on their faces really resemble the style of that movie!
This was very well done! I’ve even seen all the movies referenced and didn’t pick up on most of them while watching the show (excluding when they were blatantly referencing movies like titanic haha). Would love more!
LETS GOOO!! This comment got me hyped af because it was exactly what I was tryna do with the video. Please share it with people so more people can watch it 🙏🙏
I don't know if I'm right, but I think there are also some references to Goodfellas by Martin Scorsese. Firstly, the scene in S2E6 where Nate threatens Maddy on her bed with the gun is quite similar to the one in Goodfellas where Karen points the gun to Henry on their bed. Also like the general toxicity of the two couples, Maddy and Nate and Karen and Henry, is quite similar. In fact, in the same scene of Goodfellas I mentioned before, there's a voiceover of Karen that says: "But still, I couldn't hurt him. How could I hurt him? I couldn't even bring myself to leave him. The truth was that no matter how bad I felt, I was still very attracted to him." This sentence is very similar to the one in the voiceover of Rue doing the presentation of Maddy in S1E5 where she says: "It wasn't the violence that scared her. It was the fact that she knew, no matter what he did, she'd still love him." Another reference I think it's in the scene where Rue freaks out when she finds out that her mom and Jules flushed her pills down the toilet (S2E5). Henry, the protagonist of Goodfellas, does the same thing when he finds out that his wife Karen flushed his cocaine down the toilet. Then I also find the “mood”, the “vibe” of Euphoria very alike to the one of Goodfellas sometimes. I don’t know, maybe it’s because of the voiceover, because of the massive usage of soundtrack all over the series (like in the movie), because of the presentation of each character using the flashback where you see them as children (also at the beginning of Goodfellas you see young Henry and how he became the man that now he is) or because of the editing with rapid cuts and zooms in some parts of the series and of the movie. Does it make sense?
Wow thats awesome! Never thought about it that way. Could definitely be the case. It is such an influential movie for our pop culure so I think it's possible for sure!
While there's no doubt post editing, a lot of the colour tones come from the fact its shot in Kodak Ektachrome. It really gives it a distinct look to any other modern show. @@iansmart4158 midsommar is about a girl being indoctrinated into a cult by being drugged, having every single one of her peers killed and then forced to burn one himself after being forced into an even more vulnerable place by the death of her family and just seeing every single crazy shit that went down in the festival
there was nothing happy about the ending, it is only happy to her because she was made to believe it bc thats how cults work
@@cawcaw9089 Exactly. I read the script when it leaked before I saw the movie (did a really amazing job of depicting an anxiety attack on hallucinogenics btw) and the last page literally described her only smiling because she's given in to the madness.
Edit: I guess depending on your perception of things, that could be a happy ending 🤔
The scene where Rue begs fez to open the door is also a parallel to Leonardo DiCaprio’s role in another film where he’s playing a drug addict begging his mom instead to open the door
yess Basketball Diaries! Somebody else mentioned it too! 🙏🙏
I was trying to figure out what that scene reminded of.
@@sammy770 It can still be a parallel. Most of them, especially in this show is subtle. And it’s just something they noticed; it’s their opinion.
I've heard a few people, usually over the age of 30, referring to the coloured lighting on this show saying things similar to "the lighting dosn't look like this in college dorms" or "teen-agers don't sit around under purple lights all day" but almost everyone I know has coloured led lights these days, so...yea
Litteraly. So many teenagers sit in their room in the dark with led lights
now that you're saying it, it definitely changed over the years. Its a vibe
yepp, you're right
Didn't mean to sound like a dick with the "people over the age of 30" shit. Just for the record I'm 41 and I sit around under led lights all day too. I do smoke a lot of weed though😆

Very beautiful indeed! Cool analysisss

Yes so epic right!
True. Euphoria High School might not be common to find, but that doesn't it mean Euphoria High Schools don't exist in real life.
It uses its influences, while staying true to its own concept and aesthetic.
100% epic right!
Good critics. Now I understand better why I am impressed with the cinematography and feeling the nostalgia. I have watched most of the references movies and iconic scenes. Thank you for explaining!
Thats so epicc, glad to have given a new insight 🙏
Wow awesome observation, definitely makes sense! 🙏🤝
the show is so unrealistic but i kinda think that’s why euphoria is so successful. let’s be real, if it was similar to the REALITY of teenagehood, barely anyone would watch it. i really hope intertextuality becomes more prevalent in other shows. this was a great take!

Awesome observation!!
Omg yeah I was wondering what that stare reminded me of!!
Whoever sets up the scenes in this show must love Renee Magritte. You see the artwork "The Lovers" as one of the famous recreated scenes between Rue and Jules, and in the most recent episode (S2E7), you see "Not to be Reproduced", which is er, reproduced with Nate.
wowwww yess, thats epic!
Theory is, the scenes based on art. Frida as the main inspiration for a few. The flower sequence is in one of her artworks. Especially since Frida dealt with quite the similar story. Sort of stealing a man from some one else and ending up in heart ache. Lexi was another reference, also to the girl with the pearl earring.
wow that awesome, thank you for the cool details 🙏
frida didn't steal a man... her husband cheated with her sister

@Natali POland Thats also a very good analysis. Thank you for sharing! 🙏
@Natali POland Ofcoursee! I read everything, I love it when people give well thought explanations! 👑
@Du Cinema
I thought that the end of midsommar showed how easy it is for a cult to use the pain and instability of another to brainwash them and make them completely dependent on them, whilst also having them believe that they are completely in control of their decision.
8:41 that scene actually is pretty realistic though. when i go roller skating, men shout nasty things like that all the time.!

Haha yeppp movie within a movie within a movie
Thank you so much for your reply, insights and kind words! Really glad you liked the video! All the best to you! 🙏👑
@@rocketjet5813 she started well I agree, (I haven’t finished S02 yet)

You forget the Rue/Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 4th wall reference which is typically used with Rue as a mechanical to remind the audience that she may be lucid, but she is indeed present; way more than she lets on, despite the drug use. She only does it to react to something and mostly it’s through expression, versus dialogue. I always find it interesting considering the theories regarding her narration, and specifically how that could be looked at as breaking the fourth wall, but they do it through different mediums to expound on feeling, and to provide emotional context. This was a dope video too btw.

I loved Rocketman. I read some interviews, and they acknowledged the how inaccurate some events depicted were, but they weren't aiming for Realism- if you watched the movie they made that clear, instead they were capturing memories of experiences.
exactly! Very well described. The creators of euphoria had a very similar mindset it seems!
Now people are like: „Did u see Euphoria?” and I am always like: „yeah..." and inside I'm really happy that I was between people who watched it at time when nobody knows Euphoria. aside from the montage of rue and jules in various portryals of relationships i didnt pick up almost any reference (mi not big into film stuff) so when we saw the opening shot of nate with the sink, i still think it did an amazing job portraying his aggressiveness despite not knowing what the shot is based off of- i think if a piece of media is able to use pop culture references but you can still understand the media without the reference then you have made something that truly capture a wider audience (even for the montage scene despite those being very iconic scenes (obciously why they were chosen) you can still tell that its trying to portray the love between them- also how they (meaning the titanic and brokeback moments) convey the future tradgey of their relationship)
I think the first episode has a reference to the french movie “a portrait of a lady on fire”.(a movie about a relationship between two women in the 1800’s, worth a watch)
In the scene that jules sees rue smoking a joint in the campfire, the close ups on their faces really resemble the style of that movie!

It was the fact that she knew, no matter what he did, she'd still love him."
Another reference I think it's in the scene where Rue freaks out when she finds out that her mom and Jules flushed her pills down the toilet (S2E5).
